Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Circle
The guests who had mocked me earlier all looked away, and no one dared say another word to my face.

[Oh my God! Meredith is absolutely killing it!]

[She’s protecting her man so openly!]

[She just publicly slapped the Monroe family in the face, staked her claim on Shawn, and gave him the highest recognition and respect!]

[I’m in tears. This is what a truly good woman looks like!]

[Veronica, who the hell do you think you are!]

The comments raced wildly before my eyes.

I stared blankly at Meredith’s profile so close to mine, warmth spreading through my chest.

"Meredith…" My throat tightened, and my voice was barely audible.

She turned to me and gave me a reassuring smile. "Since the ceremony isn’t over yet…"

Her voice was steady, with a hint of amusement. "Why don’t we continue? But—"

Her gaze drifted casually across the room. "Let’s skip the unnecessary parts and just exchange rings."

Someone quickly brought over a brand-new pair of rings. Their design was simple and elegant, with an understated luxury that made it obvious they were worth a fortune.

The cold metal slid slowly onto my ring finger. Somehow, the fit was perfect.

"Your turn." She handed the other ring to me.

My hand was still trembling slightly as I held the band, as though it weighed a thousand pounds.

I took a deep breath, lifted her long, strong hand, and slowly slid the ring onto her finger.

Meredith released my hand and said simply, "The ceremony is complete. Today was too rushed. Give me a year. I’ll prepare something perfect."

Every guest was stunned. For a moment, no one even applauded.

But Meredith didn’t care. She looked once more at Emmeline, whose face had turned livid. Her smile was gone. "Emmeline."

Then she turned toward the guests. "Thank you all for attending my wedding today. Please forgive us for the lack of hospitality."

She said nothing more before she took my hand and turned away. "We’re going home."

Home?

She led me through the crowd, which instinctively parted before us, and toward the dazzling sunlight outside the hall.

A fresh wave of comments floated happily across my vision.

[AAAAH! They’re holding hands! They’re holding hands!]

[Home! She said they’re going home!]

[A new chapter begins! I can’t wait to see Veronica regret everything!]

There was a smile on Shawn's face that Veronica hadn't seen in a very long time.Jealousy and alcohol burned away the last of her reason. She rushed forward and grabbed him.But the way he looked at her was so cold, so unfamiliar. He said, "Meredith is my wife. I'm calling the police."The moment the security guards escorted her away, she looked back and saw Meredith carefully examining the red marks around Shawn's wrist. The tenderness in her eyes was unmistakable. So there really was someone who would cherish him like that. The love Veronica had given him had been filled with condescension and neglect.Later, the family crisis crashed down on them like an avalanche.Veronica

[Veronica Monroe's POV]When Veronica dragged Damon out of the wedding, she was actually relieved.See? It wasn't that she didn't want to marry Shawn. Damon needed her.A cat he had raised for ten years was family to him. The stakes were too high. She couldn't just stand by and watch him lose his family.Shawn would understand. He was always so considerate. Besides, there would always be another time. She irritably tugged at her clothes. How many times had it been? She couldn't remember. Shawn always forgave her. He would always wait for her.She took Damon to the bar she frequented and drank quite a bit. Damon leaned against her shoulder, quietly sobbing."Veronica, thank God I have you… I knew it. In your heart, I matter so much more than that nightclub guy."She frowned. "Don't talk about him like that.""Am I wrong?" Damon lifted his tear-filled eyes. "Isn't that exactly the kind of place he came from? Veronica, sooner or later, you'll return to where you belong and marr

When the plane landed, the capital was being battered by pouring rain."Meredith," I spoke softly. "Will the Monroes be difficult to deal with?"Her tone remained calm and unruffled. "The Monroes? They should have disappeared from the capital a long time ago. For the past few years, I only held back because you were by Veronica's side."My heart jolted.Had she been holding back against the Monroe family because of me?"Now, they dared to provoke you. They're asking for it." Her words steadied me like a shot of reassurance. The car didn't take us home. Instead, it drove straight into the underground parking garage of the Rodgers Group. The door to the executive office closed behind us, shutting out the outside world. An assistant quickly brought in a thick stack of documents, and Meredith immediately immersed herself in them.I sat quietly on the sofa beside her without disturbing her.Rain pattered softly outside. As the minutes passed, the unease in my heart strangely began

I tightened my grip on my phone. "I need an explanation. Yesterday afternoon, you said you had a video conference.""I did." She nodded, her tone steady. "But in the middle of it, I received a call from Conrad. He said he had information about the Monroe family's core business secrets and wanted to tell me in person, as leverage in exchange for me letting the Monroe family off the hook. He chose the location and insisted that I go alone and immediately.""You went?" I asked hoarsely."I did," Meredith admitted without hesitation. "But I only gave him ten minutes. I also had someone on the rooftop of the building across the street recording everything, and my people were with me when I entered and left the restaurant."She worked the computer for a moment and turned the screen toward me.Several surveillance screenshots from different angles were displayed, with the timestamps clearly visible."He tried to get close to create an intimate-looking angle, but I avoided him. The photo

The sea breeze seemed to fall completely still. All I could hear was her clear voice and the frantic pounding of my heart. The comments raced wildly across my vision.[Love at first sight! She fell for him that early?!][Say yes already! What are you waiting for?!]I looked into her affectionate eyes. The last rays of sunlight reflected in them, along with the stunned, dazed version of me."I…" I opened my mouth, but I had no idea what to say.Meredith saw my confusion. She took my hand again, her voice returning to its usual calm. "I'm only telling you this so you know that my choice was never an impulse. As for our feelings…"She paused. "We can take our time."We spent the next two days in a subtle, delicate atmosphere. She was still thoughtful, but she never brought up what she had said that night again. She just started making more and more demands. She wanted a hug every morning. She wanted me to sit beside her whenever we ate.She wanted me to kiss her.My cheeks wa

We decided to honeymoon on a quiet island in the south. When the plane landed, I looked out at the azure coastline and still couldn't believe any of this was real."Tired?" Meredith's voice came from beside me.I came back to myself and shook my head, unconsciously licking my lips. "How did you know I liked this island?"She smiled and handed me a glass of water. "One of my insiders in the Monroe family told me."The comments floated happily past.[Mrs. Rodgers is so thoughtful!]I quickly looked away, pretending to be captivated by the scenery outside, though my heart had started beating a little faster. Our hotel was a private villa. The moment I pushed open the floor-to-ceiling windows, warm, humid sea air rushed inside. In the seven years I had been with Veronica, she had never once taken the initiative to plan a proper trip."Get some rest first. We can walk along the beach when it's cooler this evening." Meredith set down our simple luggage. Her movements were always ca
