The Sanctuary's Wisdom

Author: Daphne
(Eliza's POV)

Nanny Edwards' wrinkled face was pinched with suspicion at my sudden change of heart. Her eyes narrowed as she studied me carefully.

"Miss Eliza, just yesterday you were eager to meet your parents. Now you wish to visit Elder Morgan first? What changed?" she asked, her voice sharp with doubt.

I lowered my gaze, feigning embarrassment. My hands fidgeted with the edge of my sleeve, a calculated gesture of nervousness.

"I had a dream last night, Nanny Edwards," I said softly. "An elderly wise man appeared to me, scolding me harshly for forgetting my roots."

Her expression softened slightly, but suspicion still lingered in the tight lines around her mouth. She wasn't easily fooled.

"He reminded me that Elder Morgan was the one who insisted on finding me," I continued, making my voice tremble. "She believed I was alive when everyone else had given up hope."

I looked up, my eyes wide with manufactured sincerity. "How could I be so eager to confirm my identity that I would disrespect her by not visiting her first?"

Nanny Edwards' weathered face relaxed, her eyes warming slightly. My act was working.

"That's... quite thoughtful of you, Miss Eliza," she said, her tone less accusatory.

"I've been ungrateful," I pressed on, bowing my head in apparent shame. "My first visit should be to my grandmother at Green Pine Sanctuary."

I clasped my hands together tightly. "Only after paying my respects to her should I meet my parents."

She studied me for a long moment, her gaze penetrating. Finally, she nodded slowly.

"I can take you to the sanctuary," she conceded. "But I cannot guarantee Elder Morgan will agree to see us."

"I understand," I replied firmly. "But I must try."

Relief flooded through me. This deviation from Katherine's plans would buy me precious time and keep me from walking straight into her trap.

We set out immediately after gathering our things. The journey was long and tiring, taking us through dense forests and over rocky hills.

My legs ached from the travel, but determination pushed me forward. This was crucial to my plans.

When we finally arrived, I gasped at the sight before me. Wooden buildings nestled against ancient pines, their roofs curved gracefully against the mountain backdrop.

"Wait here," Nanny Edwards instructed before disappearing into the main building.

I stood alone in the courtyard, breathing in the crisp mountain air. For the first time since my rebirth, I felt truly safe.

The scent of pine and herbs filled my lungs. Birds called to each other from the trees surrounding the sanctuary.

Nanny Edwards returned quickly, her face grim and her steps hurried. My heart sank before she even spoke.

"Elder Morgan refuses to see you," she announced flatly.

Though I had expected this, disappointment still stung sharply. I straightened my spine and lifted my chin defiantly.

"Then I will wait," I declared, my voice ringing with determination. "I'll stay here until she agrees to meet me."

The security guard who had accompanied us frowned deeply, his displeasure evident. His hand moved to rest on his weapon belt.

"Miss Eliza, we should return to the Northern Territory," he insisted. "Your parents are expecting you."

"No," I said firmly, meeting his gaze without flinching. "I will stay."

Arguments erupted, heated and intense. The guard threatened to carry me back by force if necessary.

I stood my ground, refusing to budge. Eventually, he gave up and left to report my decision.

He left his young assistant behind to watch me. The boy's nervous glances told me everything I needed to know.

I knew this was Katherine's doing. She wanted someone to spy on my every move and report back to her.

Once alone in our quarters, I pulled Ivy close and whispered urgently, "Keep your ears open for any news from the territory."

"Yes, Miss Eliza," she replied, her eyes wide with nervous energy. Her hands trembled slightly.

Days passed with no word from Elder Morgan. The silence was deafening, but I refused to give up.

I created a strict routine for myself. I rose at dawn each day to meditate in the gardens, focusing my mind and strengthening my resolve.

In the afternoons, I practiced calligraphy until my fingers ached and cramped. Ink stained my hands black.

My handwriting remained terrible despite my efforts. The characters looked clumsy and childish, nothing like the elegant script of a proper lady.

One afternoon, as I struggled with a particularly difficult character, laughter erupted behind me. The sound was sharp and mocking.

"Look at this, Nanny Edwards!" a woman's voice crowed. "The girl writes like a child!"

I turned to see an older woman holding one of my practice sheets. Her face was twisted with amusement.

This must be Martha, Elder Morgan's personal attendant. Her eyes sparkled with malicious glee.

Nanny Edwards snatched the paper from her with a disapproving frown. "She's trying, Martha. That's what matters."

From the shadows of the doorway, I noticed another figure watching silently. My heart skipped a beat.

Elder Morgan herself stood there, tall and imposing. Her sharp eyes missed nothing.

"Has she been practicing every day?" the Elder asked, her voice strong and clear. It cut through the room like a knife.

"Yes," Nanny Edwards replied respectfully. "She's quite determined."

Elder Morgan said nothing more, but her gaze lingered on me before she turned and left. Her footsteps echoed on the wooden floor.

The next day brought an unexpected gift. Nanny Edwards approached me with a leather-bound book in her hands.

"This is a herbal guidebook," she explained, offering it to me. "Elder Morgan had it made for your father, but he never showed interest in it."

My hands trembled as I accepted the book. The leather was soft with age, the pages yellowed at the edges.

"Thank you for giving this to me," I said, running my fingers over the embossed cover.

"Don't thank me," Nanny Edwards said with a small smile. "Elder Morgan instructed me to give it to you. She's noticed your persistence."

Hope flared in my chest like wildfire. My grandmother wasn't as unreachable as she seemed.

That evening, Nanny Edwards joined me for tea. The days at the sanctuary had softened her formal manner somewhat.

"You know," she began hesitantly, warming her hands on her cup, "Elder Morgan wasn't always so isolated."

I set down my cup immediately, eager to learn more. "Would you tell me about her?"

Nanny Edwards sighed deeply, her eyes growing distant with memories. "Your grandmother was born Eleanor Blackthorn, daughter of one of the most prestigious warrior families in the Northern Territory."

"A warrior family?" I echoed, genuinely surprised by this revelation. I leaned forward, captivated.

"The Blackthorns are one of the founding bloodlines," she continued. "They're known for producing exceptional fighters. Your grandmother was perhaps the finest of her generation."

I tried to picture the stern elder as a young warrior. The image stirred something deep within me.

"She must have been incredible!" I exclaimed, fascination coloring my voice.

Nanny Edwards nodded, but her expression darkened suddenly. "When your father was just eight months old, there was a brutal attack on the northern borders. Elder Morgan was called to defend her people."

"She left her baby behind?" I asked, leaning even closer.

"She had no choice," Nanny Edwards explained, her voice heavy with old sadness. "She entrusted him to Donna Dennis, a household attendant."

Her eyes grew more distant. "The campaign lasted much longer than anyone expected—five years passed before she could return home."

Understanding dawned on me, sharp and painful. "And by then..."

"By then, young James had bonded deeply with Donna," she said sadly. "He didn't recognize his own mother. He cried whenever Elder Morgan tried to hold him."

My heart ached for the proud woman. "That must have been devastating for her."

"It was crushing," Nanny Edwards confirmed, her voice breaking slightly. "She tried everything to reconnect with him, but he rejected her at every turn."

She shook her head slowly. "He would run from her to hide behind Donna's skirts."

I felt a lump forming in my throat. "Did they ever reconcile?"

"No," Nanny Edwards shook her head slowly. "When Elder Morgan tried to separate them, James became hysterical. He threatened to hate her forever if she sent Donna away."

The pain in her voice was unmistakable as she continued, "He even told her, at just five years old, that he wouldn't attend her funeral when she passed."

(Eliza's POV)Nanny Edwards settled on the worn wooden bench beside me, her weathered hands cradling her teacup. The evening breeze carried the scent of pine through the sanctuary gardens."There's more to Elder Morgan's story than just losing her son's affection," she said softly. "Something far more painful."I leaned closer, genuinely curious. "What happened?"Nanny Edwards' eyes grew distant. "While defending the northern border, Elder Morgan was gravely wounded saving her mate's life."My heart clenched at this revelation. "She was injured protecting him?""The attack left her with terrible scars across her body," Nanny Edwards continued. "Worse still, the injuries damaged her ability to shift into her wolf form and took away her fertility."I gasped softly. For a werewolf, losing the ability to shift was like losing half your soul."When she finally returned home, her mate couldn't bear to look at her scarred body," Nanny Edwards' voice turned bitter. (Eliza's POV)The commotion in my quarters drew attention like wolves to fresh prey. Shouts echoed through the sanctuary's peaceful halls, shattering the tranquility I'd come to cherish during my stay."Release me at once!" I demanded, trying to wrench my arm from the guard's iron grip. The guard tightened his hold. "Orders from Alpha James Morgan. You're coming with us, Miss Eliza."I noticed a crowd gathering at my door—sanctuary attendants and spiritual advisors drawn by the disturbance. The Morgan Pack guards, initially aggressive, faltered at the sight of so many witnesses.Gregory Weily pushed through the onlookers, his long beard quivering with indignation. As a senior spiritual advisor and my fellow gardener in the sanctuary, his presence commanded immediate respect."What is the meaning of this?" he demanded, voice thundering across the room. "How dare you use force within the sacred grounds of Green Pine Sanctuary!"The guards exchanged nervous glances. Their leader, a

(Eliza's POV)Nanny Edwards stared at me with surprise for my directness and emotional detachment. I realized my mistake immediately. I change too much, seemed like a completely different person from the quiet, almost numb she-wolf that Nanny Edwards had first encountered in the Northern Territory wilderness."Miss Eliza?" she asked carefully. "Are you feeling well?""Forgive me," I said quickly, forcing a tremble into my voice. "The shock of everything... I'm not myself."Her expression softened slightly. "It's understandable," she replied, studying me with renewed interest. "What you've endured would unsettle anyone."The door opened, interrupting our moment. Nanny Edwards straightened as a young attendant entered with a tray of steaming tea."Leave us," she instructed the girl, who bowed hastily and retreated. We sat in silence as she poured the fragrant tea into two cups. The familiar scent of moonlight herb mixed with mountain berries filled the small room."I've spoken

(Eliza's POV)Elder Morgan stared at me, her eyes widening with shock. The silence that followed my bold suggestion stretched between us like a physical thing."What did you just say?" she finally asked, her voice dangerously quiet.I took a deep breath, gathering my courage. "I asked if you would consider returning to the Morgan Pack with me, Grandmother."She rose from her chair with surprising agility, her tall frame towering over me where I still knelt. Anger flashed in her dark eyes."You dare to suggest that I return to that place?" Her voice trembled with emotion. "After thirty years of peaceful existence here?"I remained kneeling, my head bowed respectfully. "I meant no disrespect, Grandmother.""No disrespect?" She laughed bitterly. "You know nothing of what you ask!"Despite her anger, I pressed on. I needed her support if I was to survive what awaited me at the Morgan Estate."Is this truly what you want, Grandmother?" I gestured at the sparse chamber around us. "T

Former members of the Silverfang rogue pack—brutal killers who had preyed on innocent travelers for months."Should I silence him, Alpha Daniel?" Brock Fletcher asked, gesturing toward the retreating figure.I wiped my silver dagger methodically, cleaning the blood from its gleaming surface. The weapon had done its work efficiently."Don't create more trouble," I instructed, voice calm despite the violence that surrounded us. "Tell Oliver Sage we just handled a case here."Fletcher nodded, his gaze lingering on the carnage. Bodies with throats slashed lay against the wooden floor, their blood staining the planks beneath them.I examined my reflection in the now-clean blade. (Eliza's POV)William Morgan sat proudly atop his stallion, looking down at me with undisguised contempt. His guards flanked him on either side, burly men with hard eyes and cruel smiles."Seize her," William commanded, his voice cold and imperious. "She's wasted enough of our time."The enforcers dismounted and approached me, restraints hanging from their belts. I felt Ivy freeze beside me, her slight body trembling with terror.I pulled her behind me protectively, using my body as a shield between her and William's men. Her loyalty had earned her at least that much."Stop," I called out, my voice surprisingly steady. "Elder Morgan is still at Green Pine Sanctuary. She won't appreciate you disturbing her peace."William's laugh was sharp and mocking. "Grandmother? You think she'll protect you?" He dismounted, striding toward me with casual arrogance. His fine clothes and proud bearing marked him unmistakably as the son of the Gamma."Our grandmother no longer involves herself

Are you certain you should make such a broad promise?"I nodded without hesitation. "I meant what I said. I'll do anything you ask of me."Her gaze sharpened, testing my resolve. "What if I ask you to do something difficult? Something unpleasant?"I didn't falter. My rebirth had given me perspective few could understand. After dying alone and forgotten in a frozen shack, what could possibly frighten me now?"Even if you asked me to walk through fire, I would do it," I answered with absolute conviction.Something flickered across Elder Morgan's face—surprise, perhaps even respect."What if I asked you to face those who wronged you alone?" she pressed, her voice low. "What if I sent you into danger?"I met her gaze steadily. "For your support,

Everything we had planned would fall apart."That bitch," I muttered, clenching my fists until my nails bit into my palms. (Elder Morgan's POV)Mistress Dennis bit her tongue, clearly struggling to maintain her composure after my direct insults. Her face had turned an interesting shade of red, a mixture of embarrassment and barely contained rage. But it was her sons who couldn't restrain themselves. The eldest—a burly man with his mother's features—stepped forward, his face contorted with indignation."Mother, it's only right for us to come back and serve you, but my mother—"I slammed my hand against the table, the sound echoing through Green Pine Sanctuary like a thunderclap. Everyone flinched, including Victoria and Katherine who stood at the back of the room."Who do you call mother?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the sudden silence. "Outrageous!"I turned my glare to Donna, who had gone pale beneath her rouge. "Mistress Dennis, is this how you raised your sons? "William, please," she whispered, her eyes wide with what looked like genuine fear.I frowned, studying her reaction. Something wasn't right. Katherine had always been confident, even arrogant, in her position within the Morgan pack. This new timidity seemed out of character."Young Master Morgan, don't be like this," she continued softly. "Liza didn't actually say anything wrong. It's my own guilt toward her."William's jaw clenched, but he remained silent, allowing Katherine to continue."After all, I occupied her place all these years. Seeing

The thought of my grandmother and my disappointing father continuing this foolish meddling made my stomach churn."Sparrow," I instructed coolly, "go to Wolfstar Hall for me. I need you to retrieve my embroidered handkerchief."My loyal maid nodded quickly. "Yes, Miss Eliza. I'll be quick."I paused outside the War Room door, steeling myself for whatever awaited me inside. (Eliza's POV)The Moonlit Barge Tavern bustled with activity as Nanny Winters settled our bill. I watched her count out the coins—nearly two hundred dollars for a single meal—and felt a strange pang in my chest. In my previous life, such an amount would have been unimaginable."Is something wrong, Miss Eliza?" Sparrow asked, noticing my expression.I shook my head. "It's nothing. Just thinking about the cost."Nanny Winters tucked her coin purse away. "It's a reasonable price for the quality, Miss Eliza. No need to worry.""Miss Eliza, this is nothing," Sparrow said enthusiastically. "For the sons and daughters of prominent pack families, a single meal costing $500, $1000, even $10,000 is normal."I raised my eyebrows. "That much for a single meal?"Sparrow nodded vigorously. The last time I'd seen this bracelet, it had been broken during my desperate escape on Evergreen Mountain. Now it lay before me, whole again."You fixed it?" I repeated, unable to mask my surprise.Alpha Daniel's expression remained impassive as he watched me. "Not just fixed. Improved."He reached across the table and picked up the bracelet, holding it between his thumb and forefinger."The original thread inside was weak. I replaced it with tempered steel wire."I blinked, trying to process his words. Why would the fearsome Alpha Daniel, the territory's Chief Justice, bother with such a trivial task?"May I?" he asked, gesturing toward my wrist.I hesitated before extending my arm across the table. His fingers were surprisingly gentle as he slipped the bracelet onto my wrist, though I couldn't help but notice the contrast between his large hand and my slender wrist."Try to break it,"
