Chapter 3

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
[I was scared to death. I thought it was some serious illness. Turns out it was just bruising from how rough my girlfriend was last night. She said it was the best experience she’s ever had. She just couldn’t control herself. Poor girl. She just can't get enough of me.]

However, that extremely provocative post was deleted less than two minutes later.

Then, Lynn’s call came through. After I answered, she stayed silent for two seconds. Carefully choosing her words, she asked, “What are you doing?”

“Nothing.”

She seemed to finally relax when she heard how normal I sounded. She probed, “You didn’t see anything, right?”

I heard the tension in her voice but did not answer. Her breathing immediately grew tense again. Just as she was about to say something else, she heard the sound of a door locking.

“You went out? Where are you going?”

“To my mother’s house.”

I needed to go sort out her belongings and see her off one last time.

Lynn immediately said, “I haven’t visited her since that day. I’ll come with you later.”

I only grunted in response, then hung up.

Half an hour later, when I opened the door to my mother’s house, I was greeted only by emptiness. My parents divorced when I was five. All these years, it had just been the two of us relying on each other.

I had almost no relatives, so only a handful of people from my side even attended the wedding. As for the Wensley family, they doted on their daughter endlessly, but because the wedding had been postponed so many times, they did not even come this time.

Hence, the already empty house felt even more desolate. I quietly, calmly sorted through my mom's belongings. It was not until the last piece of fabric was swallowed by flames that tears finally burst out.

Lynn, who said she would come, never appeared. Yet I felt no distress at all. Over these five years with her, she had broken her promises too many times.

Suddenly, a phone vibration broke the silence in the living room.

I opened it. It was a message from Kyle.

[You’re feeling pretty satisfied after she made me delete my post, huh? To make up for it, she agreed to go to the pool hall with me. Heh.

[See it now? I’ve always been more important than you. I suggest you know your place and get lost already!]

[Even though it’s an old cliché, I still want to say it—the one who isn’t loved is the third party. Lynn is just being kind to you. Save some dignity for yourself.]

His messages came one after another, clearly venting his built-up anger. I just glanced at them and tossed the phone aside.

After paying my respects to my mother, I went to sleep.

I had already moved my luggage out of Lynn’s place. From this moment on, we had nothing to do with each other anymore.

I did not expect frantic knocking at the door early the next morning. When I opened it, Lynn clearly relaxed, though her gaze was still uneasy.

She asked in a slightly heavy tone, “Why didn’t you come home yesterday? I waited for you all night. I couldn’t reach you either.”

Under her gaze, I fell silent for a moment. I was just about to speak when Kyle suddenly squeezed in from the side and grabbed my hand. “Jensen, please forgive Lynn. It’s all my fault. Everything is my fault. Please don’t torture her.”

As he finished speaking, his fingers dug into my palm. Sharp pain shot through me instantly, and I pushed him away. I did not use much force, but Kyle suddenly stumbled backward.

Lynn hurried to catch him and looked at me in disbelief. “Jensen, that’s too far! Why did you hit him?!”

Kyle lowered his head pitifully, like a wronged and honest man. The sight of the two of them, so sweetly affectionate yet so hypocritically righteous, made me feel sick to my stomach.

Lynn felt a wave of helplessness, followed by rising anger. Even if she had done many things wrong in the past, she had already done enough now.She had found a priest for the ritual, bought back the house, and even endured the emotional torment of waiting until I had calmed down before coming to see me. Yet I had turned around and found someone else.Lynn was overwhelmed by jealousy that she had been suppressing for so long that it nearly drowned her reason. Her voice turned sharp without her realizing it.“Jensen, if you’re only with her to spite me, you’re the only one who’ll regret it in the end. I’ve already done what I needed to do. You’re not young anymore. I suggest you think carefully and don’t make…”Before she could finish, I said calmly, “I’m engaged. I’m getting married at the end of the year. Laura is a very good person. We won’t be inviting you to the wedding. She prefers peace and quiet. If you can let go, that’s for the best. I won’t trouble you over it.”A faint

However, Lynn knew that I definitely would not want to see her, so she could only suppress her emotions, enduring the torment of constant anxiety while trying to express her remorse through actions. Her voice trembled as she said, “I found a priest to perform a ritual for your mother’s soul. I've also bought your house back. I’ve changed. During this time, I’ve done a lot of mental preparation, but I still didn’t dare to come see you. I didn’t dare to look at your face.”She knew I hated her, maybe even despised her. That was why I had thrown her away like trash and left without a second thought.Five months had passed without a single message from me.Lynn hated and resented me before, but in the dead of night, my broken, desperate face would still appear in her dreams. Hence, she decided to come.Yet what she saw shattered her heart. The man she had been longing for was gently caring for another woman.I had once promised her he would only ever be good to her, that I would only

I quickly shook my head. “Of course not. I just feel like I’m slowing you down. I feel kind of guilty.”Laura smiled, her expression gentle as ever. She looked at me and said slowly, “Jensen, I like spending time with you. Please don’t think you’re bothering me. Being with you is exactly what I want.”A blonde, blue-eyed girl saying something like that made it hard not to misunderstand. My face instantly turned red. I stammered, “Don’t… say things like that. I… might misunderstand.”Laura’s eyes flickered, as though she was even happier. She replied in a soft voice, “I’m glad you would misunderstand.”My heart started pounding. Only then did I realize she might actually be serious. She did not push further when she noticed that I was not responding. She just continued, as always, matching my pace.I looked at her figure and suddenly thought of Lynn. She had a strong, spoiled personality and always gave me orders. “You’re a man. You have to let me have my way.”She also never ca

Finally, she spotted the shattered glass from the broken picture frame. Tears streamed down her face as she clenched the jagged pieces tightly in her hand. Blood seeped from her palm, but she could not feel the pain. All she could think about was the despair I must have felt as I watched my mother’s memorial portrait being destroyed before my eyes.A splitting headache tore through Lynn. She raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face twice. Then, she sped straight to the hospital. The moment she arrived, she rushed to my office. She grabbed one of my close colleagues and asked anxiously, “Ruth, where’s Jensen?”Ruth shot her a cold glance without saying a word, but the mocking smile on her lips said everything.Lynn felt as though she had just been slapped across the face. She knew that in everyone’s eyes, she was no better than trash. Yet she still wanted to try.No matter how slim the chance, no matter how impossible it seemed, she had to try.“Did he take leave?

The next second, Kyle was violently shoved away before he could receive the embrace he had been expecting. He tumbled off the platform in a miserable heap. His forehead hit the steps, and blood immediately gushed out.Lynn’s expression turned ice-cold. She looked down at him from above. There was not a trace of warmth in her eyes. “We never had anything going on. Watch your mouth!”Then, she did not even spare him another glance and turned to leave.Kyle clutched his bleeding wound in agony, while people around him pointed and whispered.Seeing how heartless Lynn was, something inside him suddenly snapped. He let out a sharp, deranged laugh. “You’re dreaming! Jensen already knows everything. He was still on the call that day!”Lynn stopped dead in her tracks. Kyle’s voice slithered into her ears like a venomous snake.“He heard everything you said, and he knows exactly what we did. I even put the call on speaker on purpose.”Lynn swayed slightly. Her mind replayed that day like

At the same time, Lynn, completely unaware of everything, kept sending me message after message.[Jensen, are you feeling better now?][I lied to you before, and you’ve also lied to me. Let’s call it even, okay? Let’s live well together from now on.][I’ve already dealt with Kyle. I won’t have anything to do with him anymore.][I was irresponsible back then. This time, I’ll pick the wedding venue myself. You just need to show up as the perfect groom.]However, no matter how many messages she sent, they were like stones dropped into the sea. Lynn stared at the screen, afraid of missing even a single reply.I, who used to reply instantly, did not give her a response. After a sleepless night, Lynn felt her head grow even heavier. Unwilling to give up, she continued sending me messages.[You didn’t reply, so I’ll take that as your agreement?]Still, the screen remained silent.Lynn made up her mind and began publicly preparing for the wedding, sending invitations to both families
