MasukChapter 4: The Distance
I arrived in New York, the city's familiar skyline a blur as I rushed through the airport. I hailed a taxi to the hospital normally a driver would have been waiting for me, but since I came back in a rush I didn't contact him to pick me up. We sped through the streets, my heart racing with every passing minute. As we arrived at the hospital, I rushed into the building I saw my dad and sister Emily outside the emergency room, their faces etched with worry. "How is she?" I asked, my voice shaking. Dad's eyes were red-rimmed, but he managed a weak smile. "She's still unconscious, but the doctors said she'll be fine." I nodded, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. We waited for what felt like an eternity, the silence between us thick with unspoken fears. “But how did accidents happen?” I asked my dad “She was on her way to Harrison Luxury Events she had an early meeting, when a drunk driver bumped into her car.” my dad explained with a calm demeanor. “So what about the driver” I asked “he wasn't injured, he has been arrested.” Better that he was arrested if I had laid my hands on the bastard he would have been in the ICU not in jail. Finally, after an hour of waiting, Mom woke up, her eyes fluttering open. I felt a sob catch in my throat as I rushed to her side, hugging her gently. "Mom, I'm here," I whispered, trying to hold back tears. Emily rushed immediately to call the doctor. The doctor came in, his expression reassuring. "She needs to rest, but she's stable. The scans are clear, and she's lucky to have avoided any serious damage. We need to keep an eye on her and make sure she gets plenty of rest." As Mom drifted off to sleep, I turned to Dad, my eyes asking the question he knew I was too afraid to ask. "She'll be okay, son," he said, his voice low and steady. "She's strong." I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude wash over me. My parents' love was the stuff of legends, the kind of love that made you believe in fairy tales. I hoped to build something like that with Avery someday. But then I remembered I hadn't told her what had happened, hadn't had a chance to explain before rushing off. I wanted to call her, but then I remembered I didn't have her number, and I had no way of getting in touch with her. Jason and Liam her already made their way back to New York I am sure they would be here soon to check on my mom, I left in a rush I didn’t even inform them, but they found out after the news of Mom's accident had spread on the news and social media and so now I was left with no way to reach Avery. Five days passed, and Mom was discharged from the hospital. I spent two days with her, trying to make sure she was comfortable and settled. But as soon as I could, I headed back to Willow Creek, determined to find Avery and explain why I left without saying goodbye. I arrived in Willow Creek, my heart racing with anticipation. But as I drove to the diner, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. I pulled up to the diner, and that's when I saw it. The sign was still there, but it looked...different. The lights were off, and the doors were locked. I tried the handle, but it was locked. I knocked on the door, hoping someone would answer, but there was only silence. I looked around, feeling a growing sense of unease. Where was everyone? I spotted Mrs. Jenkins, a neighbor, watching me from across the street. I approached her, trying to keep my voice steady. "Mrs. Jenkins, where's Avery?" Her expression was somber, her eyes filled with pity. "Avery's gone, Ethan. Her grandmother passed away, and she left town haven't seen her since then."She said, “Nobody here in Willow Creek knows her whereabouts “ I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, the air knocked out of me. Gone? What did she mean? I stumbled backward, feeling like I'd lost my footing. Avery was gone, and I had no way of finding her. No I won’t give up on my only shot at finding true love, I would search for Avery no matter what it’s takes.I was heavily pregnant, my belly swollen with our third child. The room was filled with the sound of laughter and chaos, as Eva and Alex, played in the living room, chasing each other around the furniture. I took a break from work since I was already in my third trimester, although I still do some work from home. Don't blame me; I love to work and hate staying idle. I only took the break because the doctor said I needed to rest. And also, I have nothing to worry about. Windsor Properties has been doing great; we are back on our feet, and I can't help but be proud of myself. It wasn't easy, but we are where we should be, which is on top. We are now among the best real estate firms in New York.My dad was so proud of me “Avery I never doubted you once I know you would make me proud” he had said with a proud smile on his face.I am home waiting for my dear husband, he is working late, but I know he will be home soon. As if on cue, the front door opened, and Ethan walked in, looking
The sun was shining bright, casting a warm glow over the beautiful beach where our wedding was taking place. The waves crashed against the shore, creating a soothing melody that seemed to match the beat of my heart. I stood in front of the mirror, my heart racing with excitement, as I got ready to walk down the aisle. I couldn't help but think about how far I had come, from being a naive girl to a strong, confident woman, and now, I was about to marry the love of my life. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I couldn't help but smile at the beautiful bride staring back at me. My dress was a stunning white gown, with intricate lace details and a beautiful round neckline. The dress hugged my curves perfectly, accentuating my figure in all the right places. My hair was styled in a beautiful updo, with a few loose strands framing my face. I looked like a princess, and I felt like one too. Emily, my sister-in-law, was beaming in her bridesmaid dress, helping me get into my wedding go
We left the hospital after a week, and Ethan was recovering well. The doctor said he needed to come back for a final checkup in a week to make sure everything was fine. As we drove to the police station, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. I had convinced Ethan to come with me to see Emma, but I wasn't sure what to expect. Ethan kept asking me if I was okay, but I was lost in my thoughts. When we arrived at the police station, I spotted my stepmother, Vivian, standing in the office talking to my dad, looking smug. But her expression quickly changed when she saw Ethan and me walking in together. Her eyes narrowed, and she sneered at me. "You need to get my kids and me out of this place," she said to my dad, her voice venomous. "All this was your fault. If you hadn't brought that witch and treated her better than our kids, I wouldn't have done this. I had to fight for what actually belongs to my kids and me." My dad looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Are you done?
I woke up with a jolt, screaming Avery’s name. The pain in my shoulder was intense, but it was nothing compared to the fear that gripped my heart. I had to make sure she was okay. Then I heard her voice, soft and soothing. “Ethan, calm down, I’m okay.” I opened my eyes to see her face, bruised and battered, but smiling at me. A wave of relief washed over me, thank God she was okay. I looked her up and down, taking in her injuries. She had been treated, but I could see the pain in her eyes—a pain that went beyond physical hurt. I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my shoulder, and I winced. “Easy, love,” Avery said, gently pushing me back onto the bed. “You’re okay” I said looking at her in shock. “I would sworn I saw you got shot before I lost consciousness” I said looking at confused and waiting for explanation. “Okay Ethan calm down you just woke up you need to rest” she said looking at me with love. “No I am fine I want to get all the details now” I said firmly “ok
My eyes widened in fear as I jumped out of the window of the warehouse, my heart racing with adrenaline. I landed on the wrong foot, and a searing pain shot through my ankle, like a hot knife cutting through my flesh. I bit back a cry, knowing I had no time to indulge in the pain. I scrambled to my feet, my eyes scanning the surroundings, my breath coming in short gasps. Two of the men burst out of the warehouse, their guns drawn, their faces twisted with anger. My heart skipped a beat as the men pointed their guns at me. I took off, and I ran for my life not caring about the pain in my ankle, the sound of my own ragged breathing filling my ears. As I sprinted towards the gate, I was about to run out when a figure burst from the shadows, rushing towards me with a fierce determination. Ethan. My heart skipped a beat as he lunged at me, his body blocking the bullet meant for me. We hit the ground hard, Ethan was shot in the shoulder, and he was bleeding but he kept trying to tell m
I sat in my car, my mind racing with thoughts of Avery. Where was she? Who had taken her? I had been trying to track her phone, but it was still switched off. I was feeling desperate and tired of waiting. I have two suspects: her step-mum and her daughters, I noticed they never liked Avery but since she never discussed anything with me about them treating her badly, I chose to ignore whatever it's is I observed. Then her friend Emma, something just felt off about her, I just can't point a finger at it. One thing is for sure, Anyone who hurts Avery I would make them regret coming to this life. My phone rang I thought it was Taylor the private investigator but it was Avery’s dad, I decided to act calm and not tell him what was going on “Good afternoon sir” I said into the phone my heart beating fast “Ethan how are you doing, sorry to disturb you, I know you and Avery are both tired from yesterdays Stress but I really need speak to her, I have been trying her line it's not going th
