The room had stopped feeling like a room after the second day. By the fourth day, it felt more like a box meant to hold something dangerous until it either calmed down or broke. The stone walls were bare, the single window was too high for me to reach, the air was always cool no matter how long I sat or paced. I had traced every crack in the wall with my eyes so many times I could see them even when I closed my eyes.

I had stopped counting the hours. I counted heartbeats instead.
