Chapter 2

Author: Reneemoon
I went back to the estate.

While packing in the bedroom, a dust-covered CD fell from the top of the wardrobe.

My father had left it behind.

I stared at it for two seconds, then slowly slid it into the player.

On the screen was the moment Salvatore first proposed to me.

In front of the family chapel, surrounded by white doves, he knelt on one knee before me, his smile deep and burning with passion.

My father, Salvatore's chief bodyguard, had for once dropped his stoic guard-duty expression and stood there smiling, raising his camera to capture the moment.

I had believed all that happiness was frozen in time forever.

During a massive FBI raid on the Santoros, the Family issued an emergency alert: sixteen-year-old Caterina had gone missing.

My father found her hours later, her clothes torn and disheveled. The Family she was betrothed to immediately broke off the engagement, and Caterina accused my father of raping her.

Then she stood before the Commission of the Five Families and pointed at him.

"He did it," she sobbed. Then she dropped to her knees before her father. "But please don't kill him. What he did doesn't deserve death."

My father denied it until his voice gave out. I believed him. No one else did.

My Family had nowhere near the Santoros' power. To the men on the Commission, my father was only a bodyguard, while Caterina was a sixteen-year-old girl begging mercy for the man she accused.

The chairman gave a single verdict. "Handle it yourselves."

Everyone in that room knew what he meant: whatever the Santoros did next, the Five Families would look the other way.

The elder Santoro's men tortured my father, tied stones to both my parents, and dumped them into the sea.

By the time the tide returned them, I could barely recognize my father's face.

Salvatore held me while I screamed.

"Julia, I promise you, no matter what it costs me, I'll be right beside you when we kill every last one of those bastards!"

He kept that promise. Together, we began tearing the Santoro empire apart from the inside.

That was when Caterina started sending Salvatore coded warnings behind her father's back.

One warning made him change convoy routes minutes before a Santoro hit squad opened fire on the empty car.

She never stopped pleading for mercy either. "I know what Julia's father did to me," she wrote, "but he didn't deserve to die. Julia shouldn't lose anyone else because of me."

Salvatore read that letter until the paper softened in his hands.

"She was the victim, and she still tried to save your father," he told me. "How can you keep blaming her?"

I stared at him.

The man helping me avenge my father had already decided my father was a rapist.

Five years ago, when we finally cornered the elder Santoro, I killed him. Salvatore pulled Caterina behind him before I could turn the gun on her.

He brought her into the Rizzo Family under his protection, and the hatred between us never left.

Six weeks ago, we stormed the last Santoro stronghold in a full-scale firefight.

Stray bullets screamed through the air.

When I saw a round heading straight for Salvatore, I threw myself in front of him without thinking.

A searing pain tore through my lower abdomen.

A groan tore out of me. I turned to look for him, only to see him rush past me and pull Caterina tight against him where she cowered beneath the sofa.

"Caterina, don't be scared... I'm here..."

Caterina was shaking all over. She pointed at me, drenched in blood.

Salvatore didn't spare me a single glance. He just murmured to her softly, "Don't worry. She won't hurt you."

Every drop of blood in my body turned to ice. I clutched my lower abdomen and snarled.

"Salvatore... I'm the one who's hurt!"

He blinked, startled, and only then came back to hoist me onto his back, his other hand still holding tightly onto Caterina.

Not until he had escorted her to safety and confirmed she was unharmed did he finally put me in the car to the hospital.

The haze of memory faded. I closed my eyes, took out my phone, and dialed a number.

"I need you to forge a death certificate. I want the name Julia to disappear from this place forever."

When I got the confirmation, I hung up.

Just then, the bedroom door slammed open with a bang.

Salvatore walked in, Caterina clinging to his arm.

His voice cracked, like sandpaper grinding over rusted iron.I didn't stop. I pulled the zipper all the way shut."Just hear me out..."He rushed in, shut the door behind him, and pressed his back against it, as if afraid I'd bolt."Julia, what am I supposed to do?"You've never given me a straight answer," he said, his voice shaking. "How could I not worry? That's why I monitored your calls... What if you disappeared again?"I stopped and looked at him."That's exactly why I'm leaving."He went still."Salvatore, you've never seen me as a real person." My voice was quiet. "This is just your possessiveness talking. You're not afraid of losing me. You just can't stand that I don't want you anymore."His mouth opened. His throat worked.I didn't wait for him to argue.I pulled my father's old revolver from the hidden compartment of my suitcase."Let's make another bet." I set the gun on the table, my fingers resting on the cold metal. "One bullet. Same as before."He stared at the gun, h

He handed me a black folder bearing the seals of all five Families. The first page formally cleared my parents. The second stripped Caterina of every protection and inheritance right she had ever claimed. After the child was born, she would spend the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison controlled by the Commission."I'm sorry," Salvatore said. "For believing her. For judging your father. For making you carry the truth alone. For choosing her until it cost you our child."I closed the folder."Clearing my parents' names is justice. It is not forgiveness."A silence settled between us."Marcus is a good guy."He said it suddenly. His voice was low, as if the words had been dragged from deep in his throat.I glanced at him."Yeah," I said. "He wouldn't rush off to protect someone else while I was bleeding out. He wouldn't lock me out when I needed him most. He wouldn't accuse me of terrorizing another woman out of jealousy."Salvatore's lip trembled."I know I can't go back to h

By the time Marcus and his men rushed over, I already had Caterina's gun hand pinned under my boot.He scanned the scene, crouched beside Salvatore, and checked the wound. Quick. Efficient."Bullet went clean through. Didn't hit the artery. But he's lost a lot of blood." He looked up at me. "You okay?""I'm fine."I said.Marcus didn't give Salvatore on the ground a second glance. He just called for his men to drag Caterina up and haul her to the camp's holding cell. Then he re-dressed Salvatore's bandage himself, firm but measured, the way he would handle any ordinary casualty."Thank you," Salvatore rasped.Marcus grunted, stood up, and brushed the dust off his hands. Then he turned to me."Mess hall's got beef stew tonight. Coming?"I nodded. He left.Just me and Salvatore.I looked down at him.He was propped against the wall, white as paper, sweat sliding down his forehead, but his eyes hadn't left me."Why did you do that?"I asked, my voice quiet. He opened his mouth. Blood seep

His mouth opened. His throat worked, hard."What about the baby?"The question came suddenly, barely above a whisper.I stopped.A long silence."Gone."The color drained from his face. His lips trembled, unable to form words.I watched his expression and felt something die a little inside me too, but I no longer had the strength to hurt over it."How?"He asked."You don't need to know."I turned and walked away.On the fifth evening, I had just returned from a reconnaissance mission. Then I heard the sound.I jerked my head up.Caterina charged out from behind an abandoned pickup truck off to the side. She was gaunt, her hair tangled and yellowed, her face streaked with grime, but her eyes were blazing, terrifyingly bright. The look of someone pushed past the edge of madness. She had a gun in her hand.I recognized it.It was the pistol Salvatore kept in his study. Her finger was already on the trigger, the barrel aimed at my chest.Time slowed.I could see her finger tightening on t

The West African sun was brutal.Every morning I opened my eyes and didn't have to think about whose dinner to prepare, whose call to wait for, whose mood to read. My belly was flat. The baby was gone. I had lost it on the run.I never even cried. I just woke up one night and found my pillow soaked.I worked as a mercenary here.Take a job. Collect the pay. Drink with the crew. Let the red earth bake the skin off my face.No one called me "Donna." No one mentioned the Rizzo Family. My name was Julia. Just Julia. That was enough.I first noticed him five months after I arrived.I was coming out of the barracks, heading to the armory to pick up next week's gear, when I looked up and saw him standing outside the iron gate.He had lost a lot of weight. His stubble was overgrown, the hollows beneath his eyes carved deep, and his fair skin was red and peeling from the West African sun.He wore a wrinkled shirt and stood there like a stake driven into the earth, motionless. The guards leveled

"You arranged the attack on her." Every word ground through his teeth. "You nearly got her killed at the estate!"The force on her jaw made Caterina's tears burst out instantly, but she didn't struggle."And you?" Caterina laughed through her tears. "Are you any better? You think you're some kind of saint? You're the one who pushed her out there!"Salvatore released her.He staggered back two steps, like a cornered animal, and took two heaving breaths before heading for the door."Guards." He stopped in the doorway, his voice lethal. "Lock her up. No one lets her out without my say-so!"The door shut behind him.Caterina's screams came from inside, each one sharper than the last. But Salvatore didn't look back.He walked to the end of the hallway and leaned against the wall.Blood from his knuckles dripped onto the floor. One drop. Two.He suddenly remembered the moment he had ripped the silver crest from Julia and told her she could have it back "when she'd come to her senses."He rem
