Margaret waited until the car had left the school gates before turning slightly in her seat.

"Would you mind keeping an old woman company for an hour?"

"We'd love to," Lena answered before Theo had time to speak.

Margaret laughed under her breath and looked toward the driver.

"Home, please."

The twins exchanged a quick glance.

The house came into view a moment later. The house was large. The front veranda held several potted plants. Wind chimes stirred gently beneath the roof, and roses climbed one side of the stone wall beside the entrance.Margaret noticed Lena looking everywhere at once."It isn't as exciting as you're hoping."Lena smiled."I don't know yet."Margaret stepped out first. By the time the twins joined her, th

Homework ended later than Lena believed it should.According to her, multiplication had already been invented, which meant there was no reason to keep proving it existed.Theo disagreed."It still has to be correct.""It was correct the first time.""You changed three answers.""They became more correct."Theo looked at her workbook."That's not how mathematics works."Lena reached for the pencil again."It should."Lena had barely finished her homework when her tablet chimed. She reached for it immediately.A new message appeared from Bernard.“Thought you'd like these.”Several photographs had been attached beneath the message.Lena smiled."The birthday pictures."Theo looked up from the maths worksheet he had been pretending not to dislike and moved closer as Lena opened the gallery. The first photograph covered the screen.Grandfather Beaumont stood in the middle of six children with both hands raised while everyone appeared determined to run in different directions.Lena laughed

CHARLIEWednesday had looked the same for years. The same restaurant stood at the corner of the avenue. The same maitre d' greeted me by name before leading me toward the same table overlooking the courtyard. Even the waiter who placed a glass of water beside my seat had been serving us for so long that he no longer asked whether I wanted coffee before lunch. He simply brought it.I loosened my cuff slightly and glanced toward the entrance.Minutes later, Celeste walked in.She spotted me immediately and lifted one hand before crossing the dining room."You beat me here again." She slipped into the chair opposite mine and placed her handbag beside her. "One of these days I'll arrive first.""I won't make it easy."She smiled. The waiter appeared beside the table."Good afternoon, Mr. Sinclair. Ms. Vance.""Good afternoon."He handed us our menus although neither of us needed them."I'll have the usual," Celeste said as she closed hers."The same for me."The waiter nodded and disappe

NORAI sat behind my desk at Beaumont Group with the envelope open beside me and stared at my mother's handwriting for several seconds before unfolding the first page.My fingers rested against the edge of the paper, and then I began reading. My darling Nora,If you are reading this, then Helena kept her promise.A breath caught in my throat.I lowered my eyes to the next line.I knew she would. The corner of the page pressed against my thumb. For years I worried about leaving things unfinished. It is a strange thing to know that your time may be shorter than you expected. People begin thinking about what they will leave behind… and mine is You.I swallowed and kept reading.Helena was one of the very few people I trusted completely. If this letter reached you, then she protected it all these years.Tell her thank you for me.The words blurred briefly. My eyes remained on Helena's name.I lifted a hand and pressed my fingers against my temple before continuing.By the time you read th

NORAI should have opened it years ago.Instead, the pouch sat beside me on the bed while I stared at it for what felt like the hundredth time that night.Theo and Lena were asleep upstairs. Marta had gone to bed. The rest of the house had settled for the night.I was the only one still awake.I sat on the edge of my bed with my feet resting against the hardwood floor and the pouch lying beside me on the blanket. Daniel's question came back.Did you open it?I had answered him yes without thinking twice. The lie had arrived so easily that I was still mildly disturbed by it.I reached toward the pouch and stopped before my fingers made contact. Helena had protected this thing for years. She had never told me why she did. Before Helena, it had belonged to my mother. That fact alone had always been enough to make me put it away again. I told myself there would be time later… another day, another week, another year somewhere down the line when I felt steadier and better prepared for w

CHARLIEThe city moved past the car window in a blur of headlights and traffic signals.I sat in the back seat with one arm resting against the door while the driver's eyes remained focused on the road.My phone rested in my hand. I turned it over once and set it beside me, then I picked it up again. The club events refused to leave my head. The ready conversation between Nora and Alexander; she looked so comfortable around him.And I was very sure they weren't discussing business. What could they be discussing at the club?I looked out the window. My hand tightened briefly around the phone, then my attention changed to the message I had received earlier from an unknown number. It was a video file with no explanation attached to it, and I haven't downloaded it yet.By the time the estate gates appeared ahead of us, the phone was already in my hand again. The driver pulled into the circular driveway.I looked at the notification one more time before opening the car door. The house was

NORA Edward said nothing about Gregory as we walked down the corridor. He had given his warning before the meeting, and he was not a man who repeated himself. NORA The question was still unanswered. A hundred cameras were pointed at my face. Edward stood at the side of the stage, looking as though he wanted to cut the microphone himself. I did not give him the chance. I had two choices. I could be the girl who ran from the Sinclair house with nothin

NORA The black SUV turned through the gates, the tires crunching over white gravel. Before the vehicle had even come to a full stop in front of the front step, the rear door handles clicked. "Lena, wait for the step," I said, but the warning was already useless. Lena spilled out of the car fi
