Chapter 3

Author: Lychee Yogurt
"I saw your mom, but Elsie wasn't around. Your mom said she went off to catch rats. She's a big girl now, but she's still running wild," Mom said, sounding disgusted as she gave Dad a quick rundown of what she'd seen.

I leaned in to look at Dad on the screen. My father, Gregory Pembroke, had his hair slicked back until it shone, and he wore an expensive suit.

His skin looked healthy and smooth, and everything about him radiated the polish of someone who'd never worried about money. The house behind him was bright and beautifully decorated.

A bitter ache rose in my chest. They'd been living the good life in the city all along, and I'd been foolish enough to believe they were struggling to get by. That was why I never dared to call them. The only time I did was three days before I starved to death.

Perhaps I'd been hurt so many times that nothing could stir me anymore, for I just stood numbly beside Mom.

"Honey, I've been thinking. Why don't we bring Mom and Elsie to the city?

"There's no one left in the village, and it's hard for Elsie to get to school out there. Mom's getting older too, and we're doing a lot better now," Dad said.

My shattered heart felt like it had been stitched back together just a little, and my eyes welled up with happy tears. Mom didn't love me, but Dad still cared.

I kept my eyes on Dad and smiled, even though he couldn't see me.

Mom let out a long sigh, one full of disappointment and disgust, as if I were a lost cause. She covered her nose, walked back inside the house, and panned the camera around. "Look at this. Elsie's turned the place into a dump.

"I'd like to bring her home with us too, but how are we supposed to do that when she's such a slob?"

It stung, and I mumbled, "I'm not a slob."

What could a five-year-old even do? I'd been dead for five years, and she still had no idea.

"Let me see Elsie's house! Let me see!"

A bright, cheerful voice rang out, and an 8-year-old girl with two pretty braids popped up on the screen. It was my little sister, Lucy.

She'd been well cared for. She was wearing a pretty princess dress, and her skin was as smooth and flawless as a doll's. She was confident and bubbly, like a little princess from a wealthy family.

Her smile disappeared the moment she saw the run-down house, and the disgust on her face looked exactly like Mom's. "Elsie's house is so dirty. Even a garbage dump isn't this gross.

"I don't want her coming to our house. She's so dirty, she'll bring in all kinds of germs!"

So that was it. In their eyes, I wasn't part of the family.

Dad quickly pulled Lucy into his arms to calm her down. "Okay, okay, whatever our little princess says. We won't bring your sister here just yet.

"Let's have her fix her hygiene habits first, then once she's nice and clean, we'll bring her here. How does that sound?"

Lucy pouted smugly and tugged Dad's hand, leading him off to the side. "Let's show her my room. When she can keep her room as pretty and clean as mine, that's when we'll bring her here."

Lucy proudly paraded the camera around every corner of her room. "Mom, let her see what a girl's room is supposed to look like. I don't want a sister who lives in a garbage dump."

I couldn't take my eyes off Lucy's room. She had a soft, beautifully designed princess bed, while the whole room was decorated to look cute and bright, with a shelf full of neatly arranged toys and figurines.

Her room was huge, and it connected to a glass walk-in closet packed with every kind of outfit imaginable. Even the rug was snow-white and so fluffy that it looked like a cloud.

I just stood there watching, my mind completely blank. My heart was so battered that I couldn't find the strength to hate them or even resent them.

"Your sister's only like that because she lives out in the country. Once she comes to the city, she won't be like that anymore.

"When she gets here, you'll have someone else to play with you and look after you. Won't that be nice?"

Dad's words to Lucy stabbed into my heart like a knife.

I'd always hated being told that because I was the big sister, I had to look after my younger sister and let her have her way.

  • Five Years Dead, Mom Knocks on My Door   Chapter 10

In the middle of the night, Mom came home drunk to the empty house and fell asleep alone on the cold floor.I ran to the bedroom to get her a blanket, but my arms went right through it. All I could do was lie quietly beside her, listening to her pained breathing and the words she mumbled in her sleep now and then.My heart sank. I couldn't understand how Mom's life had ended up like this.Dad didn't come home until noon the next day. Mom talked to him like nothing had happened and asked how Lucy was doing.Seeing Dad in his suit and tie, I figured he must have a good job, since he could afford such a nice house. Mom shouldn't have needed to do such grueling, degrading work. When Lucy came up, Dad's face grew heavy, and he hesitated like he didn't know how to say it.Mom panicked and grabbed his arm. "Is Lucy getting worse?"Dad nodded, his voice low. "The doctor says she needs a second surgery. This one's even more expensive than the last, around 200,000 dollars."Mom's whole w

Grandma couldn't take care of herself, so after a lot of thought, Dad put her in a nursing home.My spirit followed Mom and Dad back to their home in the city. The moment I walked in, I couldn't believe how big the house was. It looked like one of those rich families' homes on TV. The living room, dining room, balcony, and all the decorations had me staring in every direction.Mom walked into one of the bedrooms, and as soon as I stepped inside, I froze. The layout and decorations were exactly the same as Lucy's room. If it weren't for the big, colorful banner on the wall that read "Welcome Home, Elsie", I really would've thought it was Lucy's room.Mom touched the little vial at her collar, her voice catching. "This is the room we got ready for you. I worried you wouldn't like it, and I worried you'd think we were playing favorites. Your dad and I talked it over for a long time before we decided to make it just like Lucy's."I followed her into the walk-in closet. The glass wa

Lucy was admitted to the hospital, but she was stable for now. Every day, Mom and Dad went up the mountain with the police and volunteers from the community to search for me, until the DNA results came back and confirmed that the skeleton was me.Mom was so heartbroken that she fainted right there.Dad fell to his knees, sobbing, and kept pounding his fist against his chest. "Elsie! My Elsie!"How am I supposed to go on? I've worked myself to the bone for those two girls. God, why do you keep doing this to our family? Why did you have to take my Elsie?"He was a grown man, yet he was crying so hard he could barely breathe. My heart ached so badly. I forgot about the five years they'd ignored me, and I gently wrapped my arms around his shoulders. "Dad, it's okay. I'm doing fine over here."The truth was, I wasn't fine at all. I was like a lost soul drifting from place to place, with no home when I was alive and nowhere to belong now that I was dead. But he cried so hard that my ow

A dried-out human skeleton was lying in the grass. Mom's legs gave out instantly, and everything went black as she fainted.Dad looked like he'd been struck by lightning. He held Mom up, trembling from head to toe. "It can't be Elsie. My Elsie's mischievous and smart. It's not her."His eyes filled with tears, even as he tried to sound hopeful. It was also the first time I'd ever heard him praise me. Seeing how terrified and devastated they were, I almost felt loved. The police said they'd take the remains back for a DNA test, and my ghost followed them into the car. When Mom came to, she grabbed Dad's hand anxiously. "Did they find Elsie?"The results weren't back yet, and Dad didn't want her to worry, so he tried to reassure her. "They're still looking. They'll let us know if they hear anything."Mom was so upset she started crying and smacked the seat in frustration. "Just wait until we find her. She's getting the spanking of her life!"Neither of those girls ever think abo

"I've got things to deal with at the company, and that kid just wasted my whole day. My time's worth 400 dollars a day. When she gets back, I'm giving her a spanking, and don't you dare try to stop me!" Dad snapped, making sure to get Mom on his side first.Mom nodded. "That kid needs some discipline. Go right ahead, I won't stop you. If this keeps up, she's going to turn out useless. I'm so angry right now!"I'd be happy if she were even half as well-behaved and sweet as Lucy."So in their eyes, I was just a worthless failure. They'd always compared me to Lucy, and even if Lucy never lifted a finger, she'd still be the perfect daughter to them.I let out a weary sigh, even feeling a little grateful. "At least I'm already dead, so I don't have to be your daughter anymore."The two of them complained about me until their mouths went dry. They finished the bottled water they'd brought, but they wouldn't touch the water in Grandma's house because they thought it was filthy. The sun

Dad and Mom both froze, completely blindsided."No, we didn't," they said at the same time. Fear and worry crept across both their faces.I stood in front of them and muttered angrily to myself, "I'm dead, so you're happy now, right? Or are you just worried there's no one left to take care of Grandma?"I'm nothing but a tool you can use. If you don't love me, then stop pretending!"Mr. Dobbs looked stunned. "I heard you took her with you. I never saw Elsie any of the times I came by, so I assumed you'd taken her too."Mom's voice grew more anxious. "We took our younger daughter. We couldn't afford to take both girls at once, so now that we're doing a little better, we want to bring the older one over too."Dad looked uneasy. He turned to Grandma, who was barely lucid, and pressed, "Mom, where's Elsie? Where did Elsie go?"Grandma was wolfing down a piece of bread with her grimy hands. She couldn't understand a word anyone said, and she stayed lost in her own little world.Dad s
