Chapter 5

Author: Mountain River
On my journey back to the downtown district, I leaned wearily against the window. Memories of the past five years flashed in my mind.

My wolf had never been so silent and couldn't even manage a whimper. I knew that just like me, she was dead and empty inside.

How had I spent the past five years?

For nights, I'd been alone, wrestling the restlessness and heat from the mate bond. I'd never slept a night in peace.

When managing pack affairs, I'd faced the power-hungry elders' schemes alone. When patrolling the pack compounds, I'd fought off rogues in the woods alone.

Even when the roof of the downtown district's council hall leaked, I was the one who'd climbed up to see it fixed.

So, why exactly was I still holding this farce of a mate bond?

The plane sliced through the clouds as I looked out the window, where the sky stretched in an endless expanse of blue. A healing clarity settled in my chest.

Ten hours later, we finally touched down at the airport in the downtown district. Whe

On the way back, my car broke down.I'd just grabbed my phone to call for roadside assistance when a black, heavy-duty SUV pulled to a stop in front of me. Then, a tall, good-looking wolf stepped out. He had eyes the color of light amber that carried a sharp, steady gaze. His voice sounded cool when he spoke. "Need a hand?"I took a wary step back. "I called for help."The wolf nodded and walked up to my hood and popped it open. After a glance, he turned to me and calmly said, "The engine's overheated. It's a small issue, and if you don't mind, I can take care of it."I cautiously edged closer but kept a safe distance. "And how would you do that?"The wolf said nothing. Instead, he fetched a bottle of coolant and a toolkit from his SUV before swiftly fixing the problem."Alright, you're good to go," he said, dusting his hands and closing the hood. With that, he turned to leave.I quickly called out to stop him and pulled out my phone. "Thank you, but let me transfer some mon

Serene froze. Clutching her throbbing cheek, she gawked at Alaric in disbelief. "Alaric, d-did you just slap me for that Omega?"Under the weight of a dozen stares, he closed his eyes, and his voice was heavy with fatigue."Serene, I've tolerated you because I promised to take care of you and make up for what you once suffered. But that doesn't mean you can keep crossing my line and hurting my… hurting Kyna."With that, he turned to me, his voice softened with a raw apology and warm for the first time. "Go home. I'll handle the rest."I nodded, wanting no part in this absurd play. But with tears spilling from her reddened eyes, Serene erupted in fury once again and blocked my path like a lunatic. "You can't leave!"Kyna, I just want one answer—you don't love him anymore, do you? Have you completely given up on him? Just tell me the answer, and I swear I'll never bother you again!"She thought this was the last bargaining chip that would force me into a dilemma, but little did she

After Alaric left, I changed my working hours just to avoid him. Life seemed to return to peace again. Before walking out that day, he'd quietly left the moonstone ring on my table. I'd stared at it for a while before finding a piece of string. Then, I'd threaded it through and hung it on my dog's collar. When I woke up from a nap, I found an unread message from Serene, who wanted to meet at a cafe in the downtown district.I'd intended to ignore it, but she sent a second message. "If you don't show up, I'll find you at work. Let's see who ends up embarrassed then."I almost laughed at that stupid, lowly threat. But if this could finally bring it all to an end, I agreed to the meeting. At five o'clock sharp, I walked into the cafe. When I took my seat, I noticed Serene sitting across from me looked haggard. Dark circles mapped below her eyes, and there was no trace of the high and mighty she-wolf she used to be.She didn't bother with the pleasantries. She rudely said, "Kyna,

Immediately, I saw raw confusion and helplessness on Alaric's face. His usually cold composure cracked for the first time like a man who'd just lost his footing. But I was done and running out of patience for his games. "Alaric, do you know that once the Moon Goddess' mate bond is severed, it can never be restored? I don't need your late attempts to make up when the damage is done. Some wounds can never heal."For some reason, I was reminded of the bouquet of Easter lilies Alaric had gotten Serene for her birthday. They'd been apart for years, yet he could clearly remember all her preferences. What about me, his mate for five years? And now, after I'd made up my mind to cut that tie clean and draw a hard line between us, was this his way of making up to me? Was this how he was going to win me over, by not knowing I was allergic to the flowers he kept giving? It was ironic.I stared at him and watched his lips move like he wanted to speak, but I didn't want to hear any of it. "

I hesitated for a few seconds before giving a small nod. But my voice was cold and devoid of emotion when I said, "Fine, as long as you don't bring up starting over and stay out of my life.""Alright." Alaric agreed immediately, like he was afraid I'd take it back. With a sigh, I pulled out my phone and unblocked the number I'd kept in my blocked contacts for half a year.Alaric's eyes lit up, and he even smiled.Later, he offered to take me home, but I refused. Dinner with my ex-mate was already pushing my limits, and I wasn't about to give him more chances to stay together. After returning home, the first thing I did was transfer the cost of the meal to his bank account with a note attached. "Now we're even."I'd just stepped out of the shower when my phone rang with a call from Alaric's mother. For the past six months, she'd called now and then to check on me. Her voice was always tinged with guilt for me and disappointment for her son.Ever since Alaric returned to the dow

Alaric had lost weight, which sharpened the cold, untouchable angles of his face. When our eyes met, he panickedly crushed the cigarette between his fingers. The victory feast around us roared with laughter and music, but he walked against the tide of wolves toward me in steady steps."I regret it now, Kyna," he said. His hoarse voice carried a crack of vulnerability even he failed to notice. As I stared at his pale face, I momentarily fell into a daze.He seemed different, yet somehow still the same. He was still the Alpha who could stand in a simple shirt and pants and make every other wolf in the room lose their color. But now, I felt nothing for him.Looking into his sincere eyes, I puzzledly asked, "What do you regret?"He held my gaze and murmured, "Let's start over, alright?"I shook my head without hesitation, and my tone left no room for negotiation when I said, "No. I'm doing just fine on my own."For a moment, he faltered as if he hadn't expected my decisive rejecti
