Chapter 3

Author: Pansy Wilde
Chris and I tumbled to the ground after he yanked me away from the guardrail.

He grabbed my shoulders with bloodshot eyes and snapped, "Have you lost your mind, Hannah? What will happen to your parents if you jump now? What about Queenie? They'll never live down the shame and backlash!"

I was stunned. It turned out that Chris had saved me just so Queenie wouldn't get dragged through the dirt.

Chris panicked when I burst into tears. "Why are you suddenly crying?"

He reached out to me, then withdrew his hand halfway. "Queenie and I talked it over. She has agreed to let you become Jennie's godmother. That should be enough, right, Hannah?"

Chris' condescending, almost charitable tone made me burst out laughing.

I grabbed his wrist and demanded, "When did you get involved with Queenie?"

Chris instinctively looked away, unable to meet my eyes. "Please just drop it, Hannah…"

I stared intently at him and snapped, "You'd better tell me this instant! I deserve to know what actually happened!"

Chris remained silent for a moment before tightly closing his eyes. "On the day you had the miscarriage, I was drinking alone, just trying to numb the pain. Queenie stopped by and said she'd pack some clothes for you and take them to the hospital. I had too much to drink, and then…"

He lowered his head, sounding terribly hoarse. "I had to take responsibility for what happened. Queenie found out she was pregnant soon after. I couldn't bring myself to give up the baby, so I had to…"

"You had to give me up instead, huh?"

I was surprisingly calm. I kept thinking about what happened at the hospital back then—Chris tending to me and Queenie driving him away.

I used to think she was just dissatisfied with how he was taking care of me. It turned out she was simply worried about him getting tired.

I staggered to my feet, holding onto the guardrail beside me.

Chris eyed me warily. "Please just hear me out, Hannah. Queenie and I are having a wedding ceremony in three days. You have to show up when the time comes.

"Otherwise, everyone will think Queenie is the homewrecker. I'm begging you, Hannah!"

I looked at Chris and smiled wryly. He had never begged me for anything before this.

Chris' phone suddenly rang. Queenie's voice came through from the other end, sounding sweet and clingy. "I just finished my prenatal checkup, Chris. Please come pick me up!"

Chris glanced at me before turning away.

I, on the other hand, sat by the river all by myself through the entire night.

I returned home the following day and packed up all my belongings.

Mom suddenly pushed open the door and said, "Come with me, Hannah—I need your help with something."

It wasn't until Mom dragged me into a bridal shop that I realized she wanted me to accompany Queenie while she tried on wedding dresses.

"Queenie is your sister, so stop making such a big deal out of it, Hannah."

Queenie was applying her lipstick in front of the mirror. "You can't really hold it against me, Hannah. You see, love isn't about who came first—it's all about mutual attraction and willingness to be with each other."

I clenched my fists, fighting the nausea rising in my stomach. "You already have everything I was denied, Queenie. Why did you have to take Chris away from me, too?"

Queenie suddenly let out a laugh and whispered, "Did you really think your miscarriage was an accident, Hannah?"

I stood rooted to the spot, a chill running down my spine.

Queenie looked at me pointedly and continued, "You were always traveling and staying late at work with your boss back then. Chris had long suspected the baby wasn't his. If I recall correctly, you only started bleeding after you drank that soup he made for you, didn't you, Hannah?"

I jerked my head up and met her pitying gaze. "You're lying!"

I stormed out, determined to track Chris down and get the truth out of him.

Mom walked over to Queenie and asked softly, "Is what you said really true, Queenie?"

"How else was she supposed to completely give up on Chris if I didn't say that, Mom?"

I stumbled out of the bridal shop in a daze. I looked up when I heard the blaring horn and spotted Jennie standing in the middle of the road, less than 30 feet from the incoming bus.

I instinctively charged forward, grabbed her, and lunged toward the sidewalk.

Those in the crowd shrieked while my back narrowly grazed the passing tires of the bus.

Chris dashed out from across the street and yanked Jennie away.

I hadn't even gotten up when Chris' voice bore down on me. "If you really want to die, leave my daughter out of it, Hannah!"

In my third year in Havenport, I finally managed to make the down payment on a small apartment with money I had earned myself.I invited Marissa over for a housewarming celebration, and when we ran out of wine halfway through the meal, I went downstairs to buy more.I had just walked out of the supermarket when someone stepped in front of me. It was none other than Chris. He had gotten noticeably thinner, with a sickly complexion, bloodshot eyes, and gray streaks at his temples. He hadn't even bothered to shave his face.He looked at me, his eyes instantly brightening. He grabbed my hand, looking visibly excited. "It's really you, Hannah! I knew you weren't dead!"I quickly pulled my hand away and wiped the spot he had touched. I kept my voice completely calm while talking to him, as if I were facing a stranger. "I'm sorry, but you got me confused with someone else."Chris swayed on his feet before looking up at me in disbelief. "It's me—Chris! How could you possibly not recog

Tabitha ignored everything else and opened Twitter. She noticed that the post Hannah had written had climbed to the top of the local trending topics. Hannah had laid out everything that happened to her in the past five years—how Chris and Queenie had deceived her into believing they were dead, while they had actually been secretly building a life together. She had even described how Tabitha, Benjamin, and the other relatives had known the truth and kept it from her."You were the only person who was ever really on my side for the first 29 years of my life, Chris. You, however, were the one who killed our unborn child with your own hands. I'll never forgive you, Chris."You took my husband and took a lifetime of our parents' love, Queenie. Do you really think you've won? What you've won was only my scraps, Queenie! "You won't be able to have a good night's sleep from now on, since I'll always appear in your dreams to remind you that I died because of you!"I'll never call you M

In that instant, everyone in the medical examiner's office fell silent. Then, the older-looking police officer yanked the sleeve of the officer who spoke earlier and stepped in to smooth things over. "We're very sorry for your loss. Please handle Hannah's funeral arrangements and lay her to rest as soon as possible."As Chris and the others headed to the crematorium, the atmosphere was suffocating.Queenie was clearly unhappy with how things had turned out. "Hannah is already gone, so let's just give her a proper funeral and move on. We have to get on with our lives, after all."She tightened her grip on Jennie's hand when she noticed no one responded.Jennie suddenly started bawling. "I want to go home! I want to go home!"If this had been any other time, Chris would have immediately picked Jennie up and coaxed her. Tabitha would have dropped everything to fuss over her and soothe her.Chris, however, slammed his hand onto the horn this time. He turned to Jennie and yelled, "

In that instant, everyone in the hall fell silent.Tabitha was the first to snap out of it. "Who the hell are you? Get out of here! You're at a wedding, for crying out loud! How can you bring up something like that here? "Get them out of here, Benjamin!"Benjamin Stewart, Hannah's father, marched over and waved them off impatiently. "Get out of here! What kind of scam are you pulling here? You're actually pretending to be police officers, huh? You'd better leave this instant! Otherwise, I'll call the actual police!"Hearing that, the lead police officer furrowed his brow and pulled out his police ID. "If you don't believe me, you can take a look at my ID. I'm being completely serious here. "I'll ask again—who here is Hannah Stewart's next of kin?"Benjamin didn't even bother looking at the ID. He snatched it from the lead officer's hand and tossed it aside, yelling, "You're nothing but a damn fraud! Get the hell out of here! Can't you see that we're holding a wedding for ou

Queenie rushed out right behind Chris, pointing at me and sobbing uncontrollably. "How could you lay a hand on a six-year-old girl? If you have a problem with me, take it up with me, Hannah!"She shoved me hard after saying that, causing my palms to scrape against the ground and leaving a searing pain."I was the one who saved her!" I exclaimed as I looked over at Jennie.Jennie was pouting, her eyes bloodshot from crying. "I—"Queenie asked hurriedly, "Did she push you? Did she try to kill you, Jennie?"Jennie burst into tears at Queenie's harsh tone. "A-Aunt Hannah was the one who pushed me!"In that instant, everyone around fell silent, with those watching nearby looking at me with contempt."What kind of person would do this to a child?"Chris strode forward and grabbed my collar. "You can resent me all you want, but leave my daughter out of this!"He slapped me hard across the face after saying that, leaving one side of my face throbbing and swollen.Dad grabbed a water
