Chapter 2

Author: Pansy Wilde
Dad bellowed, "How dare you lie to us! Your mother cried her eyes out when you lost part of your esophagus! Is this how you repay everything she's done for you, Hannah?"

Mom and Dad looked at me with undisguised disgust. They didn't hesitate for a second—they took Chris' word over mine completely.

I gripped my feeding tube, feeling completely choked up. "I-I'm telling the truth."

It was then that the door swung open, and a little girl with her hair tied in a bun came running in and wrapped her arms around Chris.

"Daddy!"

Chris lifted her into his arms and walked up to me. "Meet your Aunt Hannah, Jennie."

I asked, trembling, "W-What did you say her name was?"

Chris and I used to have a child too. He rested his head on my lap, scrolling through baby name websites. "What should we name our daughter, Hannah?"

"How can you be so sure it's a girl? What if it's a boy, Chris?"

"I just love the idea of having a daughter!" Chris said before pointing to one of the names on the website. "What about this one? I like the meaning behind it! How about we name our daughter Jennie, Hannah?"

Jennie looked up at me with a smile.

"Hi, Aunt Hannah! I'm Jennie Graham! I'm six years old this year, Aunt Hannah!"

I nearly passed out when I heard that she was six years old. I had to steady myself against the wall to keep myself from collapsing.

Just then, Queenie came out of the elevator, gently holding her slightly rounded belly.

Mom and Dad instantly rushed over. "Oh my! You're expecting your second!"

Chris carried Jennie over and joined the others.

I was the only one standing in the middle of the living room, like a stranger who had wandered into someone else's house.

"It's been a long time, Hannah," Queenie said as she looked over at me, barely able to hide the smug look in her eyes.

I couldn't help but lash out. "Do you think being a homewrecker is something to be proud of?"

Mom slapped me hard across the face, her eyes brimming with fury. "How dare you say that in front of Jennie!"

Chris covered Jennie's ears and said, "I'm your brother-in-law now, Hannah. Jennie is your niece! You'd better mind your language around her!"

Queenie suddenly held her stomach and cried out in pain. Chris immediately slipped a pillow under her lower back, while Mom and Dad fussed anxiously around her.

I clenched my fists tightly, my fingernails digging into my palms, as a metallic taste filled my throat.

"Why are you just standing there, Hannah?" Lily Lane, my aunt, asked.

I instantly grabbed Aunt Lily's hand as soon as she walked in, as if grabbing a lifeline. She had always been the only one in the family who never played favorites with Queenie. "Aunt Lily, I—"

Aunt Lily shook off my hand and walked straight over to Queenie with a smile. "I heard you were back, so I rushed right over to see you, Queenie!"

Aunt Lily shot me a glance. "I've bought some of Queenie's favorite food. Bring it up, would you, Hannah?"

I barely remembered making it downstairs. I felt the heat hitting my face, but I felt cold all over. I walked absent-mindedly to the bridge where Chris and I first met.

That day, Mom and Dad had turned my birthday party into a celebration for Queenie getting admitted into a university instead.

I cried as I ran to the bridge, and Chris rushed over from behind and hugged me. "Please don't do anything reckless!"

Through tear-filled eyes, I told him Mom and Dad were always biased toward Queenie. He got angry on my behalf and snapped, "I'll go back with you and give them a piece of my mind!"

I smiled through my tears after hearing that. Chris, on the other hand, was stunned when he saw my dimples.

From that day onward, Chris would always back me up whenever I complained about Mom and Dad's blatant favoritism.

He even solemnly promised me on the day he proposed to me. "I want to be the one you can rely on, giving you the strength you need, Hannah."

Yet, at this moment, even the person I thought I could always count on had abandoned me.

I slipped my bag off my shoulder and swung a leg over the guardrail.

"Hannah!" Chris came running toward me from behind.

In my third year in Havenport, I finally managed to make the down payment on a small apartment with money I had earned myself.I invited Marissa over for a housewarming celebration, and when we ran out of wine halfway through the meal, I went downstairs to buy more.I had just walked out of the supermarket when someone stepped in front of me. It was none other than Chris. He had gotten noticeably thinner, with a sickly complexion, bloodshot eyes, and gray streaks at his temples. He hadn't even bothered to shave his face.He looked at me, his eyes instantly brightening. He grabbed my hand, looking visibly excited. "It's really you, Hannah! I knew you weren't dead!"I quickly pulled my hand away and wiped the spot he had touched. I kept my voice completely calm while talking to him, as if I were facing a stranger. "I'm sorry, but you got me confused with someone else."Chris swayed on his feet before looking up at me in disbelief. "It's me—Chris! How could you possibly not recog

Tabitha ignored everything else and opened Twitter. She noticed that the post Hannah had written had climbed to the top of the local trending topics. Hannah had laid out everything that happened to her in the past five years—how Chris and Queenie had deceived her into believing they were dead, while they had actually been secretly building a life together. She had even described how Tabitha, Benjamin, and the other relatives had known the truth and kept it from her."You were the only person who was ever really on my side for the first 29 years of my life, Chris. You, however, were the one who killed our unborn child with your own hands. I'll never forgive you, Chris."You took my husband and took a lifetime of our parents' love, Queenie. Do you really think you've won? What you've won was only my scraps, Queenie! "You won't be able to have a good night's sleep from now on, since I'll always appear in your dreams to remind you that I died because of you!"I'll never call you M

In that instant, everyone in the medical examiner's office fell silent. Then, the older-looking police officer yanked the sleeve of the officer who spoke earlier and stepped in to smooth things over. "We're very sorry for your loss. Please handle Hannah's funeral arrangements and lay her to rest as soon as possible."As Chris and the others headed to the crematorium, the atmosphere was suffocating.Queenie was clearly unhappy with how things had turned out. "Hannah is already gone, so let's just give her a proper funeral and move on. We have to get on with our lives, after all."She tightened her grip on Jennie's hand when she noticed no one responded.Jennie suddenly started bawling. "I want to go home! I want to go home!"If this had been any other time, Chris would have immediately picked Jennie up and coaxed her. Tabitha would have dropped everything to fuss over her and soothe her.Chris, however, slammed his hand onto the horn this time. He turned to Jennie and yelled, "

In that instant, everyone in the hall fell silent.Tabitha was the first to snap out of it. "Who the hell are you? Get out of here! You're at a wedding, for crying out loud! How can you bring up something like that here? "Get them out of here, Benjamin!"Benjamin Stewart, Hannah's father, marched over and waved them off impatiently. "Get out of here! What kind of scam are you pulling here? You're actually pretending to be police officers, huh? You'd better leave this instant! Otherwise, I'll call the actual police!"Hearing that, the lead police officer furrowed his brow and pulled out his police ID. "If you don't believe me, you can take a look at my ID. I'm being completely serious here. "I'll ask again—who here is Hannah Stewart's next of kin?"Benjamin didn't even bother looking at the ID. He snatched it from the lead officer's hand and tossed it aside, yelling, "You're nothing but a damn fraud! Get the hell out of here! Can't you see that we're holding a wedding for ou

Queenie rushed out right behind Chris, pointing at me and sobbing uncontrollably. "How could you lay a hand on a six-year-old girl? If you have a problem with me, take it up with me, Hannah!"She shoved me hard after saying that, causing my palms to scrape against the ground and leaving a searing pain."I was the one who saved her!" I exclaimed as I looked over at Jennie.Jennie was pouting, her eyes bloodshot from crying. "I—"Queenie asked hurriedly, "Did she push you? Did she try to kill you, Jennie?"Jennie burst into tears at Queenie's harsh tone. "A-Aunt Hannah was the one who pushed me!"In that instant, everyone around fell silent, with those watching nearby looking at me with contempt."What kind of person would do this to a child?"Chris strode forward and grabbed my collar. Chris and I tumbled to the ground after he yanked me away from the guardrail. He grabbed my shoulders with bloodshot eyes and snapped, "Have you lost your mind, Hannah? What will happen to your parents if you jump now? What about Queenie? They'll never live down the shame and backlash!"I was stunned. It turned out that Chris had saved me just so Queenie wouldn't get dragged through the dirt.Chris panicked when I burst into tears. "Why are you suddenly crying?"He reached out to me, then withdrew his hand halfway. "Queenie and I talked it over. She has agreed to let you become Jennie's godmother. That should be enough, right, Hannah?"Chris' condescending, almost charitable tone made me burst out laughing.I grabbed his wrist and demanded, "When did you get involved with Queenie?"Chris instinctively looked away, unable to meet my eyes. "Please just drop it, Hannah…"I stared intently at him and snapped, "You'd better tell me this instant! I deserve to know what actually happ
