Jacob's POV

Three months after returning home, Derrick Carpenter won the National Boxing Championship.

Chelsea Herrera looked at the photo of Derrick holding up his trophy on her phone during the afterparty celebration, and suddenly noticed me in the corner.

She came up to me, her voice trembling slightly. "Jacob Archer. Why aren't you taking photos with Ricky since he won the championship?"

I didn't even look up when I heard her question and simply responded calmly, "I'm not worthy, Ms. Herrera."

She frowned, her sharp gaze sweeping across my face as she tried to find even the slightest hint of pretense or resentment, but I didn't give her the chance. I just continued vigorously cleaning the floor that was as spotless as a mirror.

Derrick then sauntered in through the door with an undisguised smug look on his face.

"Look at my new watch, Chels! Do you think it suits me?"

Chelsea instinctively glanced at me, but I bowed immediately, my tone carrying just the right amount of flattery.

"Of course, Mr. Carpenter. Your taste is naturally excellent."

Chelsea's brow furrowed even more.

I didn't have time to care about her suspicions. Dobey the Doberman's nourishing meat broth was still simmering in the kitchen, and I had to get it.

I turned and went into the kitchen, carefully carrying out the steaming pot of broth.

Derrick sat on the couch, his right hand seemingly casually reaching into Chelsea's shirt. She was looking affectionately at him, but the moment her eyes turned to me, they were filled with malice and iciness instead.

I carefully poured the meat broth into Dobey's special bowl and gently blew on it to cool it down.

Derrick only just seemed to notice me then, and he spoke in a condescending tone. "Come over and sit down to rest for a while after you're done, Jacob."

Chelsea also unusually agreed to it, placing the plate and fork down in front of me. "Thanks for taking care of Ricky and Dobey these past few days."

I lowered my eyes, a humble smile curving my lips. "It's my honor to serve Mr. Carpenter and Dobey, Ms. Herrera. It's no trouble at all."

Derrick smiled contentedly, raising his hand to rub circles into Chelsea's waist. "Jacob's being a lot more sensible and obedient now, Chels. Maybe you should consider giving him a little more pocket money."

I listened respectfully, recalling the last time Derrick saw her casually tossing an unwanted T-shirt at me some time ago, and then, Dobey suddenly went berserk that very night, biting me so hard that I bled profusely all over the place.

Those wounds were still throbbing as I thought of it.

I knew that this was Derrick's way of "disciplining" me, telling me to know my place.

After dinner, Derrick went for his daily boxing training. He liked using someone as a live punching bag, making sure every punch landed hard every time.

I simply put on my simple protective gear and stood in the boxing ring.

Powerful punches whistled through the air and landed on my cheeks, ribs, and abdomen.

I gritted my teeth, silently enduring the blows. I got up every time I was knocked down and quickly reassumed a defensive stance. Sweat mingled with blood as it streamed down my face, blurring my vision completely.

Chelsea sat in the audience's seat, elegantly sipping on her red wine and occasionally glancing up with a cold gaze.

It wasn't until after I was completely beaten and curled up in a corner, unable to get back on my feet anymore, that Derrick finally stopped. Panting, he looked at Chelsea with a smug expression on his face.

"How was my performance today, Chels?"

This time, however, Chelsea ignored him and walked to the edge of the boxing ring, watching me struggle to my feet.

"Are you an idiot, Jacob Archer? Don't you know how to stop the practice if it hurts?"

Despite Derrick's desperate pleas, I didn't hesitate to send Chelsea all evidence of his keeping a mistress on the side and his intention to murder her."You're lying, Jacob Archer!""But didn't you already know anyway?"I was eager to see them go at each other's throats. I was also looking forward to seeing what kind of drama would unfold from this seemingly inseparable couple. The fallout came quickly.Derrick couldn't sit still any longer. He brought his pregnant mistress, Irene Morton, with him one fine day and stormed into Chelsea's villa without any hesitation.By this time, all of the company shares were already in my hands, so he could only set his sights on the jewelry and other priceless items in the villa.Meanwhile, Chelsea was already teetering on the edge of insanity, and Derrick's betrayal was the last straw that broke the camel's back. While Derrick and Irene were engaged in a yelling match with Chelsea, I watched the entire spectacle coldly, through the surveil

Hot tears dripped onto my neck."Jacob! I was so worried about you! I was so scared that you would do something rash! Come back with me, okay?"I was wrong. You've always been the one I loved the most. I should never have treated you like that. I nearly went crazy when you disappeared for days! I don't want Derrick anymore. I don't want the assets or status anymore! I only want you…"She cried like a child as she trembled hard in my arms, just like how it used to be in the past. However, I grabbed her hand, forcing her to touch the longest scar on my chest."Did you know that every single one of these wounds was caused by you, whether directly or not? They're all because of you. How dare you say such things to me now?"Chelsea's face turned pale as she instinctively tried to draw her hands away. However, I forced her to touch and caress every single scar on my body.I nearly died on the deserted island countless times during my five-year exile there, whether due to the extreme e

Jacob's POVThree days later, I landed in Mineria, a whole other city halfway across the globe, under a new identity, thanks to Richard Krause's connections.I stood before the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down at the unfamiliar city beneath my feet.My fingers rubbed unconsciously against the glass until my knuckles turned white. It was too similar…This sunset by the sea was just too similar to the beach where Chelsea and I first met.I hated it. I hated it so much…If only I'd listened to Dad back then and taken his advice, seeing right through Chelsea's ambition to just use our family as a catapult for her to rise in status, then the family business wouldn't have fallen into her hands, and Mom and Dad wouldn't have died unjustly. The door was gently pushed open."Hey, kid. Wanna go fishing?"I shook my head and picked up my phone to send something interesting to Derrick instead.I sent him a collection of evidence of him sleeping around with other influencers and s

The question ignited Chelsea's anger at once, and her long-suppressed emotions finally erupted."What are you always so suspicious about? Who else could I possibly be with besides you and Jacob?"Derrick sneered as he looked sharply at her. "Don't play dumb with me. You brought Jacob out today, didn't you?"Chelsea's heart dropped to her stomach."Me? Take Jacob out? What do you mean?"Derrick folded his arms across his chest. "With Jacob being so obedient now, he would never dare to go out without your orders. He hasn't been around the entire day. Who else could have brought him out if not you?"However, Chelsea looked as if she'd just been struck as she rushed toward Jacob's makeshift bedroom. She shoved the door wide open and saw that it was empty. Still, she went in, harboring some hope that Jacob would be inside, and a stench immediately filled her nostrils. The filthy floor was stained with dark red bloodstains, and the walls were covered in deep scratches, as if someone

Third-person POVThe next morning, Chelsea didn't see Jacob at all. She simply assumed that his injuries were too severe after getting discharged from the hospital and that he needed more time to recover.Or, perhaps Jacob was just jealously sulking in his room because of how loud and enthusiastic Derrick had been with her last night. She smiled unconsciously when she thought of the possibility.Jacob had been extremely obedient lately. He could even accept her having another man next to her. He was nothing like before, coldly threatening to break up with her if he so much as smelled an unfamiliar cologne on her.So, that afternoon, Chelsea purposely went out to buy Jacob's favorite brand of cigars and even got her assistant to purchase an order of top-quality steak, planning to have dinner with him that night.Actually, Chelsea was quite a sentimental person. When they first met, Jacob had always liked taking her to various mom-and-pop diners and restaurants, saying that these

When I regained consciousness, I was already lying in a hospital bed. Everything smelled like blood, filthy and metallic.Chelsea was sitting beside me, her exquisite makeup mostly ruined and her hair a huge mess. When she realized that I was awake, she burst into tears of joy and immediately hugged me, but I gently pushed her away. That startled her."Did I hurt you, Jacob?" she asked.I shook my head and got down on my knees before her instead."I'm sorry, Ms. Herrera, for wasting your time and resources on me. Please take me back to the villa. Mr. Carpenter still needs a live punching bag, and Dobey also needs me to care for him."Chelsea stared at my mechanical fake smile and staggered backward involuntarily. She reached out, meaning to touch me, but I flinched on instinct and protected my head like I was expecting a blow. She continued staring at me in shock, asking me in a hoarse voice, "Jacob? What's gotten into you? Why are you like this?"I lowered my head in silence.
