Chapter 1

Penulis: Ayim
Levi Meyer was gone for 30 minutes.

During that time, Lucy Carr called him five times. He answered every call and waited for her to hang up before ending each conversation.

I sat there in a daze, struggling to reconcile what I was witnessing with the man I thought I knew.

Levi had a strict rule about phone calls: they could never last longer than two minutes. If a conversation ran over, he would hang up without hesitation.

Just the night before, I'd called to ask for the code to our new smart lock. After I entered it incorrectly twice, our call exceeded the two-minute limit.

He hung up on me immediately.

With no way to get inside, I ended up squatting outside our front door for two hours until he finally came home and let me in. When I asked why he hadn't replied to my messages, his answer left me speechless.

"Just because you have nothing to do doesn't mean I'm just sitting around."

...

Levi returned to the car, and Lucy climbed into the passenger seat.

As we drove away, the employees passing by made no effort to keep their voices down.

"Mr. Meyer is so good to Lucy. He picks her up and drops her off every day, rain or shine."

"Whenever Lucy has a meeting with him, it runs ten minutes longer than usual."

"Who would have thought our efficiency-obsessed CEO would turn into a lovesick puppy? I'm totally shipping them!"

Sitting beside Levi, Lucy wore an expression of helpless amusement, although the smile playing at the corners of her lips was impossible to miss.

"Emilie, they're just joking around. Don't take it to heart," she said. "They even photoshopped our profile pictures onto a fake marriage certificate."

She pulled up an album of the edited certificates on her phone and showed it to me, as though the whole thing were nothing more than a hilarious office prank.

I stared at the pictures from the back seat, unable to find anything amusing about them.

"Anyone who saw those would think you two were actually married," I remarked.

"I can understand strangers getting the wrong idea, but Lucy is your best friend," Levi scowled. "Why are you teasing her about it, too?"

Lucy hurried to smooth things over. "It's your anniversary. As long as you're happy, I don't mind what people say."

But her attempt to defuse the situation only made Levi more defensive.

"She only cares about herself," he said, his jaw tightening. "She shows up whenever she pleases without considering how much trouble she causes other people."

He glanced at me through the rearview mirror. "Emilie, I don't want news about our upcoming wedding disrupting the company's IPO preparations. Don't ever come to my office again."

I lowered my gaze to an earring Lucy had left behind on the center console.

Then, unable to ignore the double standard any longer, I asked, "If you're so worried about people getting the wrong idea, why don't you and Lucy have to worry about your fake marriage certificate?"

Levi frowned, as though I'd asked the most unreasonable question imaginable.

"Because we have nothing to hide!"

I let out a bitter laugh.

Apparently, their fake marriage certificate was perfectly innocent, but the prospect of people learning about my actual relationship with Levi was an inconvenience he couldn't tolerate.

Before I could say anything else, Lucy tugged gently at his sleeve.

"Emilie made reservations at a private-dining restaurant, and I'm starving. Why don't we all go together?"

Levi paused before glancing at me in the rearview mirror. "If you've booked a restaurant, you should have told us earlier. Why make Lucy wander around outside with you?"

And just like that, our date became a dinner for three.

When the appetizers arrived, I quietly gave one of my two starters to Lucy.

Partway through dinner, my mother called to ask about the wedding reception. She also wanted to speak to Levi, so I handed him my phone.

When she asked which date we'd chosen for the reception, he answered flatly, "Any day is fine. There's no need to fuss over these trivial details, Mrs. Hammond. We're busy right now, so I've got to go."

He ended the call cleanly and efficiently, then handed my phone back as though nothing unusual had happened. "You've always been a perfectionist about details. But I want to keep the wedding as simple as possible."

His words left me feeling depressed. Before I could collect myself, a string of apologetic messages from Natalya appeared on my screen.

Natalya Hammond: [I'm so sorry. I didn't realize you two were busy.]

[Please tell Levi that next time, I'll make sure to schedule a call with him in advance.]

[And don't worry about the wedding. There's no rush at all. Take your time.]

I stared at her messages, suddenly losing my appetite.

I excused myself to the restroom. Once outside, I stopped beside the courtyard restaurant's window. Through the glass, I could hear Lucy laughing as she shared office gossip with Levi.

He listened attentively, occasionally chuckling along with her. The contrast brought back a memory I'd tried not to dwell on.

Not long ago, I'd tried telling Levi about the stress and unfair treatment I was experiencing at work. I hadn't even finished my first sentence before he cut me off.

"Why do you think I care about your petty, trivial drama?"

At the time, I'd blamed his response on his workload and convinced myself that he simply didn't have the energy to listen. But watching him now, I could no longer make excuses for him.

The problem had never been his obsession with efficiency. He just didn't consider my feelings worth the effort.

I lowered my eyes to my phone and texted back: [Mom, the wedding is off.]

Levi returned to Skyonaiburg to deal with the relentless negative press surrounding his company. The stock price continued to plummet until it fell below the minimum listing requirements, putting the company at risk of delisting.I remained far from the turmoil and enjoyed a quiet, peaceful life. Natalya and I packed our belongings once again and moved to a coastal town where Levi would have a harder time finding me.To my surprise, six months later, Lucy managed to track me down through a contact in the media. After losing her position at the company, she'd fallen into a deep depression and become the victim of an elaborate romance scam. She lost all her savings and found herself back where she'd started, struggling to make ends meet. When we met, she seemed timid and cautious. Nearly every other sentence out of her mouth was an apology."Emilie, there's something I've never dared to tell you. My college boyfriend broke up with me because I kept comparing him to Levi. I watched Levi with a cold, clear head.To me, this was just another calculated performance—a public relations stunt designed to put an end to the scandal as quickly as possible.Levi slowly took my hand and looked up at me with the heartfelt sincerity of a Hollywood leading man."Emilie, the only way to make things right is to tell everyone the truth," he pleaded. "You were the one who stood by me and helped build this company from the ground up, all the way to its IPO. And you were the only person I ever promised to marry."Lucy isn't my girlfriend, and she isn't my wife. That marriage was purely contractual. Once we return to Skyonaiburg, I'll give you the proper wedding you deserve, take you to City Hall to register our marriage, and transfer fifteen percent of the company's shares to you."I stared at him before glancing at the cameras surrounding us.The old Levi would never have considered explaining himself in public. He'd always believed that such displays were beneath h

After Lucy was fired, she retaliated by posting a series of accusations online, claiming that Levi had used her and then abandoned her.For a newly listed public company, a scandal like this could be devastating. Yet Levi didn't bother issuing a public statement. Instead, he left the mess behind and came looking for me.When he finally found me, he stood before me looking exhausted and disheveled, then tentatively reached for my arm. "Emilie... It took me 90 days to find you."I let out a dry laugh. "Do you think that's a long time?"He slowly shook his head. "It's the longest you've ever been away from me. In the past, whenever you went somewhere, you never stayed away for more than two months."I folded my arms and studied him.He swayed slightly on his feet, looking as though exhaustion and sleepless nights had nearly worn him down."Then your math is wrong," I said, relentless. "The moment I left, I intended to stay away for the rest of my life. Go back to Skyonaiburg. You w

Levi had always been brutally direct. In the past, Lucy had secretly delighted whenever he used that bluntness against me. But now that his cold scrutiny was directed at her, she struggled to keep her composure."Did I do something wrong?" she asked tearfully, trying to defend herself. "I was only reminding you about this afternoon's meeting. It's crucial to the IPO. Did Emilie tell you that I was interfering too much? If that's the problem, just tell her I'll move out as soon as the company goes public.""You don't need to wait until the IPO." Levi rubbed his temples, already irritated by her excuses. "Move out today. I shouldn't have to explain why."That was his way of handling problems. He skipped the discussion and went straight to the decision, expecting everyone else to accept the outcome.Lucy had prepared a carefully worded speech, hoping to soften his attitude one step at a time. But my departure had taken away the leverage she'd counted on.Without me there to provoke

Levi pushed past the tenant and barged into the house without permission. For the first time in his life, he realized that when it came to making things right with me, he had all the time and patience in the world. He was certain this was the right place. The nail holding the calendar on the wall was the very one he'd hammered in himself years ago, during a visit to see Natalya.Over the past decade, ten different calendars had hung from that nail. On every one of them, I'd carefully circled several dates.Back then, I'd always looked at him with a shy smile and said, "My mom says any of these dates would be perfect for a wedding."Levi had understood what I was asking for. He simply couldn't bring himself to agree.Whenever he thought about the endless wedding customs, complicated arrangements, and seemingly meaningless social obligations that came with family gatherings, he felt a suffocating weight settle over him.The more often I brought up marriage, the more that pressure

After walking away from everything, I boarded a train bound for my hometown.I'd barely reached the security checkpoint when an officer stepped in front of me."Excuse me, ma'am," she said. "You're listed as a suspect in an open residential burglary case. You're not permitted to leave."I stared at her in disbelief. "Are you sure?"Her expression hardened. "You can explain that to the officers at the precinct."Two police officers approached, handcuffed me, and escorted me to the precinct. To my shock, Levi and Lucy were already waiting inside. They had reported me for residential burglary, and now they presented a signed liability release before dropping the charges.I was released, but Levi insisted on taking me back to his apartment.Once we arrived, he directed me to sit at the dining table before heading into the kitchen to make a quick dish. Lucy sat directly across from me, watching me in silence. The moment the range hood roared to life, a triumphant, mocking smirk sp
