Cassie’s POV

I straightened my blazer and took a deep breath before entering the R.R. Conglomerate Holdings glass building. Another client. Another job. That was it.

I'd been repeating the words like a mantra, though my hands still trembled slightly on my leatherbound notebook. The corporate headquarters towered over me, mirrored windows glinting with the city skyline. A far cry from high school. But I'd built myself again: built myself into a person who was unsmashable… or so I repeated to myself.

My boss, Claire Lawson, nodded professionally as I entered the meeting room.

"You'll be handling a high-profile case. The client needs immediate damage control." I nodded, pulling my notepad out of my bag.

"Who is it?" I passed a file across the table.

"Jeffery Richards," my world tilted. My fingers tightened around the edges of the folder as memories from high school slammed into me—the kiss, the betrayal, the embarrassment.

"Cassie?" Claire's voice snapped me back into the present.

I subdued my reaction with an impassive, controlled countenance. "Understood."

Less than five minutes later, I waited in a luxurious conference room. My stomach knotted with apprehension when the door opened.

Jeffery came in a few minutes late, but without any apology, holding himself with easy confidence. He was taller than I remembered, and the custom cut of his suit made the most of the shoulder he had that made the high school girls all swoon. He dominated the room with his presence, but when his eyes met mine, there was a flicker of... something. Shock. Recognition. Regret?

"Cassie," he murmured.

I tilted my chin up. "Mr. Richards."

We both remained silent for a moment. The room felt too small, and the air was too heavy with memories I didn't want to bring up. At least, not in front of another person.

Finally, Jeffery chuckled, bringing back the cocky guy I'd grown to know so well from my past.

"Didn't expect to see you here."

"Neither did I," I returned evenly. "Shall we get started?"

And without another second wasted, the meeting began. I presented the PR plan with all the professionalism that I could muster. Outline a few word points I'd been thinking about, making sure to not betray one iota of emotion. This wasn't high school, after all. And I wasn't the girl I used to be. Jeffery Richards might have turned me into a starry-eyed princess chasing after a dream back when we were both in school, but I wasn't going to allow him to back me into a corner now.

"You need to control the narrative. I suggest controlling the narrative by putting yourself in the best light possible. Limit all news outlets you interact with, and issue practiced responses only. We must twist in your favor what we can't make go away."

His shock finally gave up its space for acknowledgement, his arms crossing before his chest as he leaned back against his chair.

"And you think you can orchestrate what I can say and do in favor of my reputation?"

"I don't think, Mr. Richards. I know." And for one brief second, I saw it. The uncertainty that registered on his face quickly morphed into trust. Until it was gone and replaced with irritation.

"Impressive." Jeffery glanced at me. "You've changed."

"People grow up."

"Yeah." His gaze searched hers. "Some more than others."

After the meeting, I gathered my notes in my file, but before I could leave, Jeffery spoke again. "Cassie, wait."

I hesitated but refused to look vulnerable. "Is this about business, or are we delving into the past? Because if it's the latter, I'm not interested."

Jeffery exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Look, I know I was a—"

"Don't," I cut him off, voice sharp. "This is work. Let's keep it that way."

His jaw tightened. "Fine. But we're going to have to talk about it eventually."

I walked toward the door, pausing briefly. "No, Jeffery. We don't." We had a past, and it's over."

He grimaced, "Have Cassie, we have a past and will talk about it!"

Without another glance, I left the building, my heels clicking against the marble floor, leaving him standing there as he watched me go.

The game had started again.

And this time, I intended to win.

The study reeked of old leather and cedar wood, the air heavy with unspoken specters. Edward Richards built this empire with brutal hands, yet he had built a legacy that Ethan now sought to destroy. My brother's betrayal was no longer just personal—it was criminal, threatening, and extensive.Cassie had barely left my side since I'd been home from the hospital, but this evening I'd asked her to remain behind. Just for tonight. Just in case. This wasn't her fight to start with. But it would end with both of us standing tall. Together.Edward sat behind his solid oak desk, his blue eyes piercing through me. He looked exhausted, older than I remembered as if the burden of all his secrets had finally begun t

  • Fool Me Once   The Aftershock

Cassie’s POVThe silence in the hospital room was almost too much for me to bear. The constant beep of the heart monitor on the side of Jeffery's bed was the sole reminder that time was passing. The morning was beginning to creep along the horizon outside the window, but here, the night was still clinging to everything, most of all, to me.I sat next to him, my hands laced through his. His hand was hard and warm and familiar despite the IV tube that ran from his wrist and the bruising that covered his knuckles. His bruised face was still the face of the man who had always held me with such passionate love. But at the moment, I breathed for fear. The physicians informed us that all would be well—that no organ had been injured and that Jeffery was lucky. Luck was not a word I would choose to describe what had just transpired. It was as if we had survived a storm that was trying its best to destroy us. And we were still standing. Barely.I softly rubbed the back of his hand with my thumb

  • Fool Me Once   Final Hour

Cassie’s POVI strained in the man's grasp and was pulled behind him as the fluorescent lights dazzled. My heart was beating frantically against my ribs, its frantic rhythm in time with the fear coursing through my veins. As I attempted to struggle free, the skeleton fingers around my arms had closed like a vice, even though every muscle in my body was screaming for me to do so.Jeffery huddled on the icy pavement on a cold winter's afternoon, his muscle-hardened body shaking with rage, his eyes blazing with defensive anger. A gash in his temple was seeping at the jagged edges of his square jaw. Bare to the skin, his very presence still seemed to exude toughness and stamina, his eyes clashing with mine in feral intensity."Cassie," he whispered, his deep voice sliced with pain."Jeffery," I choked out, struggling with the merciless hold of my captor. My curves shook beneath the torn seams of my blouse, exposing vulnerability. My hair spilled wildly onto my face, hiding some but not al

  • Fool Me Once   Race Against Shadows

Jeffery’s POVI strode back and forth inside the dimly lit room of my office, tension growing in the air and tightening around a spring inside me with each passing minute. My veins hummed with anxiety, muscles tensed under the starched façade of my shirt, every single cell in my body crying out to me that something was most certainly amiss.Cassie didn't answer. No calls had been made back since earlier this evening, and the clock crept towards midnight. Her silence was oppressive. She was responsible and cautious—she wouldn't just up and leave without a word. Not after all we'd been through. My fists were curled into hard balls, and my veins strained tight with anger and worry in my arms. My mind was filled with Cassie's sweet face—her big, beautiful eyes that glinted with obstinacy, the pout of her full lips when she was up to no good, the obstinacy of the line of her chin when confronted with difficulties. She was my vulnerability and my strength, and I could not risk losing her.I

Finally, the paper on my laptop screen contained the evidence I'd been seeking —irrefutable evidence of Ethan Carter's direct participation in sabotage, corruption, and conspiracy against Jeffrey. My breathing was a strangled gasp as my heart began racing, and I felt adrenaline pumping through my being.I massaged my exhausted eyes, weariness weighing on my shoulders like a yoke. It was late—oh so very, very late—but sleep would never be a possibility, with comprehension demanding to be addressed right there and then. This was my time, my time to break the deadly grip Ethan had on Jeffery, to expose him for his evil scheme, and save the man I loved.
