The crunch of gravel beneath our shoes was the only sound along the cemetery path as the funeral procession moved toward the plot.

The sky was a pale cloudy grey matching the cold air that settled over the headstones.

When we reached the open grave, two workers used ropes to lower Arthur Sterling’s coffin into the earth... the moment it dropped below ground level, my mother wailed.

The sound echoed causing officiating the minister to pause a bit.
