Cassian let out a strangled, terrible scream as the black root magic snapped. He dropped to his knees, clutching his chest with both hands as black blood seeped from his nose. His skin turned ghostly pale, covered in a sudden cold sweat.

"My chest" Cassian gasped, thrashing on the stone floor like he was drowning. "It burns! Make it stop!"

"The spell is breaking," Lucian said coldly, stepping back from his writhing son. "When fake ink meets the truth, the body rejects the lie."

I ran to Cassian's side instinctively "Cassian are you okay?"

He pushed me away "Get off me you pig"

"Cassian"

"This is all your fault, you wrecked my day, you're a terrible selfish pig"

"Cassian how can say that, I didn't do anything I ju..."

"Enough" my mother snapped and tugged me away

Maya saw her chance. She scrambled to her feet, kicked off her sandals, and sprinted toward the open balcony doors.

"Guards Catch her" my mother shrieked, finally realizing her precious daughter had ruined everything.

Four heavy armored Blackthorn enforcers stepped out from the darkness of the terrace, their broad swords drawn and gleaming in the moonlight. They blocked the edge, forcing Maya back into the center of the room. She sank to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably as the dark swirl on her neck faded into plain grey ash.

"Execute the traitor" one of the senior council members shouted, pointing a shaking finger at Maya. "She used forbidden witchcraft on the Beta's son"

"No, Please,Have mercy" my mother wailed, throwing herself over Maya's trembling body. She turned her desperate eyes to Lucian, weeping loudly. "Alpha Lucian, I beg of you Spare my daughter She is young and stupid Lock her in the dungeon for life, but do not kill her"

Lucian looked at the two women on the floor with absolute disgust. He raised his hand, gesturing to his enforcers.

"Take her to the cell," Lucian ordered, his deep voice leaving no room for argument. "Keep her in silver chains until I decide what to do with her."

The guards grabbed Maya by her arms, dragging her screaming and kicking down the stone hallway. My mother ran after them, wailing into the night.

"This is all because of the wolfless brat" an old council member barked, spinning around to glare at me with bright red eyes. "Why would you try to ambush your sister, now you've severed our only link to power and survival"

"She is a curse on this family!" another elder shouted, stepping toward me with his fists clenched. "She has no wolf, no honor, and brought nothing but disgrace to our territory"

I flinched, stepping back until my spine hit the cold stone wall. "I did not know" I choked out, my voice trembling. "I swear I had nothing to do with this"

"Silence" Lucian's command thundered through the room, so loud and heavy that the wooden roof beams groaned above us.

Every single council member froze in their tracks, their faces turning pale as the temperature in the room plummeted.

Lucian stepped between the angry elders and me, his broad back completely covering my smaller frame. He raised his chin, his silver eyes flashing with a terrifying, ancient power that forced every warrior in the room to lower their heads.

"If any of you speak another insult to this female," Lucian said smoothly, his tone low and lethal, "I will rip your tongue out with my bare hands."

The room went dead quiet. Even Cassian's painful groans quieted down to small whimpers on the rug.

"Alpha Lucian," the head elder whispered, trembling as he bowed his head. "She is a traitor to her family, she could not even protect her sister"

"She is standing in a room full of cowards who let a child run dark magic under their noses," Lucian replied, looking around the circle of elders with pure contempt. "She is the only person in this pathetic territory who told the truth tonight."

Lucian turned around to face me. The coldness in his eyes quickened my pulse rate, it carried an intense, burning heat that made my heart leap into my throat.

"Are you hurt, Olivia?" he asked softly, taking a slow step toward me.

"I am fine," I whispered, my eyes wide as I looked up at the towering man. "Why are you doing this?"

"You were never meant to be hidden in the shadows," Lucian said, his voice dropping so low that only I could hear it over the sound of the wind. "They called you weak because they were too blind to see what you really are."

"I do not have a wolf, Lucian," I murmured, my voice breaking with years of built up pain. "I am just... me."

"You do not need a wolf to belong to me," he said firmly.

Before I could process his words, Lucian reached out and grabbed my waist, pulling my body flush against his hard chest. My breath hitched as his scent of pine and fresh snow completely wrapped around my senses, drowning out every doubt in my head.

"Lucian, what are you doing?" I gasped, my hands resting instinctively against his broad shoulders.

"The bonding ceremony will go on tonight. But it will not be for Maya."

He tilted my head back, his thumb tracing my jawline with incredible gentleness. He opened his mouth, exposing sharp, gleaming white fangs.

"Wait!" the head elder yelled, taking a frantic step forward. "Alpha Lucian, stop! You cannot mark her She is wolfless, A mark will kill her"

Lucian ignored the shouting elders completely. He leaned down and drove his sharp fangs deep into the soft skin where my neck met my shoulder.

Lucian stood completely motionless in the center of the roaring courtyard, his face as hard and solid as granite. His dark silver eyes moved with painful slowness from Cassian's bruised face to Kael's self-righteous posture, before finally settling on my weeping, trembling form. The heavy chant of the bloodthirsty crowd echoed off the stone walls, but Lucian seemed utterly detached from their rage."Where is Maya?" Lucian asked, his deep baritone cutting cleanly through the deafening noise.Kael shifted his weight, crossing his arms over his chest with an easy, untroubled expression. "She is not here, brother. She left the castle grounds yesterday morning to visit the outer trading posts."Lucian did not offer a single word in response to Kael's lie. Instead, he took three heavy, deliberate steps forward until he stood directly over me. The two guards holding my arms released their iron grip, backing away into the crowd."Get up, Olivia," Lucian commanded quietly. My knees were shakin

Three days had passed in that pitch-black, damp cell, and my stomach had completely shriveled into a painful knot. Badly prepared bowls of cold porridge and stale bread crusts had been shoved under my iron door, but I had pushed every single tray away. I could not eat. I could only sit on the freezing dirt, burying my face in my knees, sobbing until my throat felt raw and raspy. Every second felt like an eternity as I imagined Lucian’s face when he returned to find me locked away like a treacherous animal.Suddenly, the deep, echoing blare of a horn sounded across the castle grounds, followed by the heavy thud of iron gates opening. He was back.Panic and relief flooded me at once, upon Lucian's return I would know where I stand and if he believed them....Sweat started to form on my forehead as I thought about how he would react to this, I had already pissed him off before he leftBefore I could even stand up, heavy, footsteps pounded down the stone stairwell. The deadbolt clicked

~ Lucian ~"I will ask you once more," I growled, my grip tightening around the worn leather hilt of my broadsword until my knuckles turned stark white. "Who commands this unit? Speak, or I will paint these dirt tracks with your blood."The masked leader did not flinch. He raised his left hand, and the metallic click of dozens of crossbows cocking echoed through the quiet gorge. The steel tips caught the pale sunlight filtering through the high pine branches."Drop your steel, Supreme Alpha," the leader commanded, his raspy voice flat and devoid of fear. "You are coming with us. We have no orders to cut your throat today unless you force our hand."A bitter wave of regret surged through my chest. I had left my private guard at the fortress, trusting Adrian's word that a quiet two man party would move faster through the border lands. Now, standing in the muddy ditch with two dozen broadheads trained on my heart, my arrogance felt like a cold stone in my stomach. My wolf thrashed violen

The iron cuffs bit painfully into my wrists as the two guards dragged my feet across the cold stone floorboards. My tears had run completely dry, leaving stinging, salt-stained tracks down my cheeks. I could not bring myself to fight them anymore. The horrified whispers of the servants and guards echoed off the high walls, every single mouth throwing venom and disgust at my head. I could not believe Maya had done this to me. She had used my face, my trust, and my desperation to pull off her wicked stunt, then stood back in the shadows to let Kael crush my neck. I had risked everything to protect her from Lucian, to stop a war, to keep her safe, and she had handed me straight over to the executioner’s block without a single second of hesitation. The guards did not take me up to a high tower. They dragged me back down the long, winding spiral steps, taking me straight into a dark, damp cell block located far deeper than the main

Cassian was sitting on a stone bench in the center of the room, heavy silver chains wrapping around his bloodied shoulders and pulling his arms tight to his sides. His dark hair hung in dirty, matted strands over his face, but as the torchlight hit his eyes, he raised his head slowly."Olivia?" Cassian rasped, his dry lips cracking as a dark, bitter smile spread across his face. "Did my father finally get tired of playing with you, or did you come back to beg for my forgiveness?"Cassian continued to stared at me through the dim torchlight, his yellow eyes narrowing into tight slits as he thrashed against the iron chains."You think I am an idiot, Olivia?" Cassian rasped, his voice raw and gravelly. "Why would you be here with a key? Did Lucian send you to mock me before he puts my head on a spike?""I am here to get you out, Cassian!" I hissed, stepping inside the stone doorway and casting a fast, anxious glance over my shoulder toward the corrid

I continued to stare at the stairway as kael and Maya walked into my own space, unable to believe it was actually happening My knees finally gave out, and I sank back onto the wooden bench in the dark dining hall, my mind completely numb. Lucian had not even been gone for a full hour, and already Kael and Maya had stripped me of my home, driving me out of the master chambers like an unwanted dog.I dragged my heavy feet over to the small wool couch sitting in the corner of the lower parlor. I curled my legs up toward my chest, wrapping my arms tight around my shivering frame, and stared at the dying embers in the fireplace until my eyes finally fluttered shut from exhaustion."Olivia! Olivia !" I heard someone call from my sleep, I didn't open my eyes, I didn't want to "Wake up, you idiot!" the person snapped A sharp grip shook my shoulder violently, jerking me out of a restless sleep. I gasped, sat up fast, and rubbed my stinging eye
