I stayed.

I told myself it was only until he came back from the meeting, that I would hear whatever he had to say and then decide. The suite felt too quiet without him. I borrowed one of his shirts, ordered coffee from room service, and tried not to count the minutes.

Just after one o’clock the door opened.

Damien walked in still wearing the same dark suit from the morning, tie loosened, expression unreadable. His eyes found me immediately, curled on the couch in his shirt, bare legs tucked under me, and something possessive flickered across his face before he shut it down.

“You’re still here.”

“You told me to wait.”

He set his phone and keys on the console table. “Board ran long. Hostile questions about the merger. Nothing I couldn’t handle.” He looked at me for another second, then nodded toward the bathroom. “I need five minutes. Don’t go anywhere.”

He disappeared into the master bath. A moment later I heard the shower start.

I sat there for thirty seconds, heart already picking up speed. Then I stood, pulled his shirt over my head, and left it on the floor.

The bathroom was full of steam. Glass walls of the shower were fogged, but I could still see the outline of him under the spray, broad back, water running down the hard lines of muscle. I opened the door and stepped in naked.

Damien turned. Water sluiced over his shoulders and chest. His gaze dropped the length of my body and darkened.

“Lila…”

I didn’t give him time to finish. I dropped to my knees on the wet tile, took him in my hand, and closed my mouth around the head of his cock. He was already half-hard; he thickened fully against my tongue within seconds. A rough sound left his throat. One hand braced against the glass wall while the other found my hair.

I sucked him deeper, water running over both of us, the heat of the spray mixing with the heat of his skin. I worked him with my mouth and hand, wet sounds loud even under the rush of water. His hips flexed once, controlled.

“Fuck,” he muttered. “Look at you.”

I pulled off just long enough to glance up, then took him again, hollowing my cheeks. His grip in my hair tightened. After another minute he hauled me up by the arms, spun me, and pressed my front against the cool glass of the shower door. The contrast made me gasp. He kicked my feet apart, lined himself up, and pushed inside in one long, hard thrust.

The stretch pulled a broken sound from my throat. Wet heat surrounded us—water, skin, the slick slide of him moving in and out. He fucked me against the glass with deep, steady strokes, one hand braced beside my head, the other gripping my hip hard enough to bruise. Every thrust forced a soft, helpless sound out of me. The wet slap of skin on skin filled the small space.

“Still so tight,” he rasped against my ear. “Still take me like you can’t get enough.”

I pushed back to meet him. He groaned and drove harder. The glass fogged thicker under my palms. Pressure built low and fast. I was close when his rhythm faltered.

“I’m going to come,” he warned, voice strained.

He pulled out suddenly, turned me around, and stroked himself twice. Then he finished across my lips and chin and the tops of my breasts, hot and thick, while a rough sound tore out of his chest. I stayed still and let him mark me, water washing some of it away almost immediately.

For a long moment the only sounds were the shower and our breathing.

Damien reached past me and shut the water off. He didn’t speak while he cleaned us both with efficient, careful hands, wiping my face, rinsing my skin, wrapping a towel around me before taking one for himself. The silence felt heavier once we stepped out into the cooler air of the suite.

We dressed in quiet. I put his shirt back on. He pulled on fresh trousers and a clean T-shirt, then sat on the edge of the bed and looked at me.

“We need to talk about this,” he said.

I stayed standing. “About whether we’re getting back together.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

He dragged a hand through his damp hair. “I want you. That part isn’t complicated. The rest is. My company is in the middle of a public merger. Your firm represents one of the secondary stakeholders. If anyone connects us right now it becomes a conflict-of-interest problem for both sides. I can’t afford the optics, and neither can you.”

Something cold settled in my stomach. “So what are you saying?”

“I’m saying we keep this quiet for now. No public appearances. No overnight stays at each other’s places once we leave this hotel. We see each other when we can, carefully, until the deal closes in six weeks.”

I stared at him. “You want me as a secret.”

“I want you without tanking either of our careers.”

“That’s not the same thing.” My voice came out tighter than I intended. “You left me once without warning. Now you’re back and the first real conversation we have is about how I have to stay hidden.”

His jaw flexed. “It’s temporary.”

“It feels familiar.”

“Lila…”

“No.” I shook my head, already moving to gather my dress and heels from the night before. “I waited four years to stop wondering what I did wrong. I’m not going to start wondering again while you decide I’m convenient only behind closed doors.”

“That’s not what this is.”

“It sounds exactly like what this is.” I stepped into the dress and pulled the zipper up myself. My hands were steady only because I refused to let them shake. “I’m leaving.”

Damien stood. “Stay. We can figure it out.”

“You already decided how it works.” I slipped my shoes on and picked up my clutch. “I’ll be the one who decides whether I accept it.”

I walked out before he could answer. The door shut harder than I meant it to.

In the elevator I stared at my own reflection in the mirrored wall, flushed skin, damp hair, the faint red marks his mouth had left on my neck, and felt anger and hurt twist together under my ribs.

I wasn’t finished with him.

But I wasn’t going to make it easy this time either.

I was two-thirds of the way through a bottle of something amber and expensive when the door opened again.Jude stopped in the doorway. His eyes went from my face to the bottle in my hand and back.“I thought I told you to stop.”I lifted the bottle in a mock toast. “Welcome home.”He crossed the room in three strides, took the bottle from my fingers with firm pressure, and set it out of reach.“That’s enough.”He crouched in front of me so we were eye level. The concern in his face was worse than anger would have been.I looked at him, and the words I had never said finally pushed free.“I’m sorry.” The confession came out raw. “For all of it. The books in the mud, the notes, the way I made sure everyone laughed. I just… I wanted to feel like I belonged somewhere. Hurting you was the only thing that ever made the other kids stand next to me. That doesn’t make it better. I know that, but it’s the only reason I have.”Silence stretched.“I won’t forgive you.”He said.I reached out, took

The story spread like smoke under a closed door.By the third day every professional contact I had ever made seemed to know the photo. Clients cancelled, two freelance contracts dissolved with polite, final emails. A recruiter who had been warm last week suddenly had no openings. Tessa’s little network had done its work thoroughly. My name was now attached to “unstable,” “unprofessional,” and a looping image of me.I stopped answering the phone. That night I found myself on a bar stool in a place that smelled of old wood and cheaper whiskey than I usually drank. The lights were low. The music was something slow and forgettable. I ordered the first double without tasting it. The second went down easier, by the third the edges of the room had softened and the weight on my chest felt almost manageable. No one looked at me twice. The bartender kept the glasses coming and strangers talked around me like I was furniture. I was fine with that, being invisible felt safer than being seen.I di

Two days later the mark on my cheek had faded, but the memory of Jude Harlan’s eyes had not.I told myself it was nothing. A stupid accident and an ancient history that should have stayed buried. I went to work, answered emails and smiled through another client call that went nowhere. At night I lay awake replaying the exact second the iced tea left my hand and the way his voice had said my name.On Thursday evening my phone lit up with a calendar reminder I had almost forgotten: the soft launch for the new co-working space downtown. Free drinks, networking, the usual forced cheer. I almost stayed home. Then I remembered Tessa would almost certainly be there, still laughing about the coffee-bar video, and spite won.The space was all glass and concrete, already crowded when I arrived. String lights hung from the high ceiling. People clustered around low tables with wine glasses and forced laughter. I took a glass of sparkling water I did not want and found a corner near the windows wh

The day had already decided to hate me.I stepped off the curb into a puddle deep enough to soak my left shoe through to the sock. Rain streaked the windows of every café I passed. My phone battery sat at four percent. The client meeting that was supposed to save my week had ended with a polite smile and a firm “we’ll be going in another direction.” By the time I pushed into the crowded coffee bar on Mercer Street, my mood was a black, humming thing under my skin.I ordered the largest black coffee they had and claimed the last free stool at the high counter near the window. Steam rose from the cup. I wrapped both hands around it and closed my eyes for three full seconds, trying to borrow calm from the heat.Someone bumped my shoulder hard enough to jostle the cup. Hot liquid sloshed over the rim and burned the side of my hand.“Oops,” a voice sang behind me. Familiar in the worst way. “Didn’t see you there, princess.”I turned to see three women from the marketing team at my old firm

Six weeks felt longer than they should have.I kept the door open during every remaining office hour. I called on him in class only when the work demanded it. I graded his final portfolio with the same ruthless precision I gave everyone else and refused to let my eyes linger when he packed his things on the last day of the semester. He never pushed past the boundary I had drawn that rainy night in my apartment. He simply looked at me the way he always had, and left the room each time without a word that could be misread.Graduation was held under a white tent on the main lawn. The air smelled of cut grass and warm champagne. I stood near the edge of the faculty section in a dark dress and watched him cross the stage, receive his diploma, and shake the dean’s hand with the same quiet composure he had shown in every seminar. When his name was called I felt the old familiar pull low in my stomach and forced myself to clap like every other professor. The after-party spilled across the dep

The chair’s office smelled like old paper and the cheap coffee that always sat too long on the burner. I sat across from her with my spine straight and my hands folded in my lap while the memory of Ellis still buried inside me the night before sat like a second pulse under my skin.“There’s been a concern raised,” she said, glancing at a note on her desk. “About the amount of time one of your advanced students has been spending in your office after hours. Ellis Hart.”My face stayed neutral. Inside, everything went cold and sharp.“He’s revising a long piece,” I answered. “The work requires extended discussion. I’ve kept the door open whenever possible.”She studied me for a moment longer than was comfortable. “See that it stays that way. Perception matters, Mara. You’re new to the faculty, the last thing any of us needs is a complication.”I left with the warning sitting heavy in my chest. By the time I reached my office the sharp edges of fear had already started cutting into the wa
