Chapter 4

Author: Number Two
Just then, the phone rang suddenly, like a piercing alarm bell, setting my nerves on edge. It was the ringtone I'd set for Ryan.

Startled, Victor dropped me. I hurried to the bedroom and grabbed the phone. Although I took a deep breath as I tried to calm myself, the tension lingered like an invisible wisp of smoke around me.

I pressed the answer button, trying to sound casual. "Hello, honey, what's going on?"

On the other end, Ryan's voice was warm and familiar. "Honey, things are going great lately. I expect to be home on Friday. What do you want? I'll bring it back for you."

"I… don't want anything. I'm just glad you'll be back," I answered mechanically. Each word was akin to dancing on the edge of a knife, carefully worded, as I was afraid to reveal my nervousness.

While I was on the phone with Ryan, Victor quietly opened my door and stepped closer.

"I remember you wanted that matcha cake here. Why don't I bring some back?"

I sat on the edge of the bed, my back to the bedroo

In the emergency room, doctors and nurses moved with brisk, clinical purpose around Victor. Ryan and I sat silently on cold plastic chairs in the quiet corridor.Ryan's face was raw with anger and worry braided together, and he kept turning to me with the questions that had been churning inside him. "What happened? Tell me everything."I took a breath and told him, as plainly as I could, what had happened those last few days. He listened, each detail stacking into the shape of disbelief. When I reached the end, he cursed under his breath. "That scumbag. How could he do that?"I slid closer to him, curling into his side, feeling both comforted and helpless. A doctor unmasked and came out into the hall. Ryan stood up before I could, his voice trembling as he asked, "Doctor, how is he?"The doctor's face was heavy with the weight of news he'd delivered too many times. "He's out of immediate danger," he said slowly, each word measured, "but he suffered a severe head injury. There's b

He froze for a beat, then that same sinister half-smile slid back across his face."Whatever. If Ryan finds out, so what? I'm old. What is there to fear?" His voice was low and cold, each word pricking at some raw place in me.I shoved his hand away with everything I had and screamed."Get away! Don't touch me!" My voice quivered, raw with terror.Victor's grip surprised me with its force. One hand clamped over my mouth while the other tried to pin me down."You're mine," he snarled, his voice threaded with something like obsession. "You won't get away."I twisted and kicked until my limbs burned, but he barely seemed to notice. His weight held me down, steady and terrifying."Let me go, you bastard!" I spat, panic sharpening each syllable. My eyes caught the lamp on the bedside table. It was a heavy metal thing with a solid base. Adrenaline blurred the edges of everything. I grabbed it by the neck, wrenched it free from its socket, and raised it like a weapon.Something in Vi

A wave of nausea and panic surged through me. I spun to run, but Victor moved faster, blocking my way. Then he leaned in, his intent unmistakable.A scream tore out of me as I shoved him back with everything I had. He stumbled just enough for me to break free. I bolted down the hallway, slammed my bedroom door shut, and twisted the lock with shaking hands.I couldn't let this happen again. I couldn't give him even the faintest reason to think I'd ever let him near me. Tomorrow, I'd buy some cameras.I lay in bed, exhausted physically but alert mentally. I knew I couldn't let my guard down. I had to stay awake tonight. When sleep finally claimed me, it dragged me straight back into his grasp. Victor's face leered from the dark corners of my dreams. I woke over and over, drenched in cold sweat, my heart racing. Even in the silence, I could feel his presence, heavy and unseen, waiting just beyond the thin wood of my door. The next morning, before Victor woke, I left the house and hea

My hands were shaking, but I forced myself to remain calm and interrupted Ryan, "Honey, I've missed you. Can we do a video call?"I tried my best to control myself and spoke gently, despite the nervousness swirling within me.Victor's eyes flickered with panic when he saw me move. He clearly hadn't expected this. I guess he didn't want Ryan to see him acting like this."Now?" Ryan said hesitantly."Yes, now," I repeated firmly. Our eyes met, a silent battle of words."Alright, wait a moment." Ryan's response rang through the phone, and my arrogance intensified.Victor clenched his fists in frustration, wrestling with a fierce internal struggle.Seeing he hadn't shown any sign of leaving, I pressed the video call button. The phone screen displayed a connecting notification, and I turned it toward Victor so he could clearly see the video call interface. That way, the moment the call was connected, he could see Ryan's face. Victor's face paled, clearly frightened. His body stiffe

I was unable to turn on the light, so I relied on my memory to navigate the bathroom and plopped down on the toilet. I instantly knew something was amiss. What… what was this?I subconsciously twisted my hips, quivering as if I'd been electrocuted. A high-pitched scream threatened to burst out of my throat when a strong, powerful hand from behind me covered my mouth."Shh… Mara, it's me…" Victor pressed himself against my back, one hand covering my mouth and the other cupping my soft mound, enveloping me in a hug."The power went out while I was showering, so I sat on the toilet waiting for it to come back on, and you just sat on me," Victor leaned close to my ear and whispered like a lover.I had to say, in the pitch darkness, hearing that familiar voice almost instantly calmed me down when I realized the man behind me wasn't a criminal, but Victor.Soon, my heart began to race. Our current position resembled the cowgirl position. Especially when Victor noticed my stiff body gra
