So handsome

MILLIE’S POV

It had been one week since I decided I didn’t want to play house with my boyfriend anymore and I actually wasn’t even a little bit sorry. I had tried so hard to make things work between us that it had become a huge headache. I gave up quickly after that. We didn’t see eye-to-eye on so many levels that I wondered how we had lasted as long as we had.

And in the bedroom? Don’t even get me started on that mess! Let’s just say, he definitely didn’t fulfill my needs and I walked around with sexual angst everywhere I went. Shit, a new cashmere sweater damn near made me convulse from the tension built up inside of me.

But now I was free!

Today I was turning over several new leaves. I was going to get back out there and be my free-spirited self. I was going to have as much hot sex as I could until I found a man who could completely satisfy my appetite. I was also starting a new job today that I was going to rock! From here on out, I was taking back control of my life.

After paying my Uber driver, I stepped out and stared up at my new place of employment. It was an enormous building and I had heard somewhere that the CEO was a pompous asshole, and by the looks of his building, the title fit. Now I just hoped that he liked me. Yeah, that’s right, I’ll be working directly under Mr. Pompous-Asshole himself as his temporary receptionist. Apparently, the other woman was out on maternity leave.

When I reached the floor I’d be working on, I couldn’t help but notice the variety of people that worked on this floor. It was actually quite refreshing to see. Since hearing about Mr. Pompous-Asshole, I pegged him as being the type of boss who only had beautiful people working for him, but that clearly wasn’t the case. The people here looked normal, and it made me feel immediately comfortable.

I wasn’t sure where I was supposed to be, but when my eyes scanned the area, I found the boss’s door with his name and title printed on a gold plaque. I guess I’ll start there, especially since he’s who I’m supposed to be working for.

The place buzzed with busy employees and non-stop ringing phones. As I walked through the area, it didn’t seem that people paid me much mind. Perhaps they thought I was one of them and didn’t realize this was my first day on the job.

I reached the boss’s door and knocked lightly. When he didn’t answer or reply to my light knocking, I tried again; harder this time.

Then the door whipped open so quickly that I nearly fell back. The man who greeted me took my breath away. It was him. Mr. Pompous-Asshole. And damn, he was attractive as fuck! I pictured a much older man in my head, not having enough time to search online for him, but now I wish I had.

I wasn’t prepared for the man standing in front of me. He had dirty blonde hair; a bit darker than blonde, with a perfect five o’clock shadow spreading across his jaw. The short beard only brought my attention to his jawline and how perfect it was. He was wearing a five-piece suit so I couldn’t tell you what his body looked like, but the strong muscles in his neck told me he probably worked out.

He glared down at me with a snarl. “Why did you knock on my door?”

I swallowed. The man was seriously intimidating. “Um, I will start working for you today? I’m Millie... your new receptionist?” It came out as a question because now I wasn’t sure if this was where I should actually be.

He stared down at me as his eyes slid over my body. Did he seriously just check me out? I’m looking right at you, buddy!

“Your desk is there.” He nodded and moved his eyes to a place behind me as I looked over my shoulder to find a large desk just a few feet in front of his office door. “Answer every single call, even if you have to put them on hold and you will do everything I say.”

I’m not sure why, but that statement caused me to squeeze my legs together. His commanding tone was seriously doing something to me and I had never experienced this with a complete stranger before.

“Yes, sir.”

My answer came out much more sultry sounding than I had intended and when I looked up into his face, he had cocked a brow as an amused gleam flashed through his eyes. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, and good Lord, I’m going to melt into a fucking puddle.

“What did you say your name was again?” He cocked his head as he narrowed his eyes before his gaze fell to my lips.

A spike of arousal slammed right into me as I cleared my throat. “Millie,” I repeated.

“Mmm, well, Millie...” his voice changed and his eyes snapped back to their angry glare, “Do your job right the first time and you might make it the three months I need a receptionist for.” Then he stepped back into his office and slammed the door in my face.

Well, that was not at all what I was expecting, especially after the way he looked at me. Was he bipolar or something? Because if he is, I know a guy that prescribes some killer pills.

I turned to the desk and tried to get as situated as I possibly could. The desk was cleared of any personal items from the previous receptionist and only a black desk phone and computer screen sat in front of me. I looked around the office and hoped someone would make eye contact with me. Mr. Pompous-Sexy-Asshole told me to answer every single phone call, but he didn’t exactly give me a crash course on how to answer the phone.

And then it rang, making me jump.

The blinking light intimidated me more than it should have as I picked up the receiver and pressed it to my ear.

I cleared my throat right into the phone. “Uh, hi, thanks for calling...” I stumbled and forgot the name of the company I was working for. “Young Corporation,” I blurted out when I saw a guy walk by with a sweater that had the company logo on it. Jesus, Millie, get your shit together.
