I could hear the drilling of the door from where I sat, but I didn’t care. The maids and guards had tried getting me to open the door, but I refused, and I’m sure they already called Zayn; hence the breaking of the door.
Being locked in this room like a prisoner was already messing with my head, and he would have to shove that food in my mouth if he really wanted me to eat.
There was a loud bang as the door fell to the floor, Zayn’s eyes blazed with anger as he walked into the room, his eyes throwing daggers at me “What the fuck is wrong with you, woman?” He thundered, but I didn’t even spare him a glance. “What’s this I hear about you locking the door and refusing to eat? Do you plan to starve my kid to death? “ He asked, but I kept mute as if he weren’t talking to me.
He stared at me for a while and when he saw that I want going to speak, he spoke again,” I didn't know that I was talking to a deaf person.” He hurled another insult at me and I rolled my eyes, clearly annoying him.
“Get her food!” He ordered the maid, his voice dripping with frustration. “Since you have refused to say a word, you will be forced to eat!”
“You wouldn’t dare!” I snarled. “First, you lock me up here like a prisoner, and now you want to force me to eat? Do I look like a captive to you? I said I won’t eat and that’s final!” I thundered.
His eyes widened in shock, “And what’s makes you think you have the right to decide what you want to do, it’s an obligation that you must eat to ensure my legacy safety”
“You’re a joke, legacy, legacy, legacy….. That’s all I hear from you” I started to say, not breaking eye contact with him, “When will you ever consider this baby as a child? And mind you, I have every right to decide not to eat and if you want your child to eat, you’ll have to force the baby out of my womb” I concluded, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
The maid walked inside with a tray of food and dropped it on the table. I was curious to know how he intended to force me to eat.
“Sit up!” He commanded, and I scoffed, folding my hands on my chest as we stared at each other.
The silence was deafening, and I knew I had to speak up, “Who treats a pregnant woman like this? Who in this world and time treats a pregnant woman like property” I shouted, not caring how loud my voice was, this man was frustrating every fiber of bone in my body. “Again, I ask, is this how your mother was treated during pregnancy?”
Zayn’s expression darkened, his eyes blazing with anger; “Don't you even speak about my mother! The last time, I’d let you but not again!” he thundered, and I stiffened, my heart racing at his tone.
“I agreed to give you my baby even though it hurts as hell” I started to say, my voice cracking as tears threatened to fall. “You treat me like your property and cage me in here all day, how do you think I cope?”.
His face softened, and he spoke up, his voice low. “What do you want? Tell me what you want, and it will be given to you.”
Now he was finally talking.
“Freedom, I want freedom, Zayn” I replied, my tone gentle. “I want to be able to go out, I want to be able to walk around freely. I want to be able to go shopping. You can’t lock me in this room for nine good months, it’s insane!”
His expression softened and for a moment, I thought something meaningful would come out from his mouth, but I was wrong, he was just a jerk. “You think you can come up with various excuses to escape and embezzle my money? The contract stated that…”. He was still saying before I cut him short.
“I don’t give a damn about that contract, Zayn. My ex-husband signed that, not me!” I said, already tired of this argument. “And what makes you think, I care about your money? I just want to be free, it’s the least you can do for me and if you can’t, I’d suggest you walk out of this room with that food”. I concluded with a stern look on my face.
“I thought you cared for this child?” He said, his tone low and soothing, he wasn’t going to guilt-trip me, all I wanted was to be able to move around, whenever I want, “I'm protecting you, what if something happens when you go out, and the child is affected?”
For the first time since I came here, he was finally acknowledging that this baby was his child and not some legacy. And is this his reason for locking me in this room? He was protecting me from danger?
“I don’t know what you're trying to protect me from but keeping me in this room is doing more harm than any good” I said, “This is your child, isn’t that what you said? And so if you want him to be healthy and fit, grant me my wish”.
He didn’t speak, as if contemplating what I said. This was shocking because I still don't understand his need to lock me up.
“And what if you escape? For all I know, you want this child too. What if you run away, this child is so important to me”.
“I won’t, I’m giving you my word and moreover you have countless bodyguards, they won’t let me escape”
He breathed in heavily before speaking up, “Fine, you will be allowed to go wherever you want but with bodyguards”.
“That’s more like it, Mr. Arrogant” I responded, smiling sheepishly. “Now if you could please hand me my food, I’m famished which means baby is very hungry” I said, a grin forming on my face, he handed me the food and a black card.
“Eat and after that, prepare to go shopping with the bodyguards” He said, his voice commanding, “And if you try to escape this time, you will never see the light of the day until you birth my child” He spat, his voice cold and detached and without another glance, he walked out the room.

ZAYN“It’s been a week now. How much do you miss her?” Ava asked, curled up in my arms as we lay in bed.It was the weekend, and we had planned to spend the entire day at home. “I can’t say, but I am just happy I reconnected with her before she left. We used to be the closest while growing up.”Ava sat up, “But why do you think she didn’t call? A video wouldn’t hurt.”I chuckled, “You worry a lot. At least she sends us text messages. Allow Cassandra to build her life back, she deserves this chance to start fresh.”She wanted to say something, but I beat her to it, “We have talked enough about Cassandra, I’m certain she will be sneezing wherever she is.” I began and Ava chuckled, “Let’s talk about our vacation.”“That’s true. The therapist said it would help me too, and so she’s given her go ahead. But won’t it affect work? You need to be in the office and…” I cut in, “I have competent workers, Ava. And moreover, I can work from every part of the world, I just want us to have this mom
CASSANDRA Two weeks later. I sat on the chair, reflecting on my life. Thirty-two years wasted. No child. No family. No business. No nothing. But now wasn’t the time to dwell on my regrets. This is a new phase of my life that came with so much peace and happiness. All thanks to Ava and Zayn. The last two weeks had been spent on relocating to their new house, planning my travel and getting ready. And now, I was having my last dinner in this country with them. “So tell me, when should we be expecting a wedding?” Ava teased, interrupting my thoughts. “And also children.” “Hmm…let’s give it, three years from now.” “Okay. Okay, we have a date!” She squealed in delight, making all of us laugh. The dinner ended in a bitter-sweet way. Knowing I would be starting afresh in another country, where I knew no one was stressing me but at the end of the day, it’s for the best. The next morning, I was up very early, my flight was scheduled for 6am, so I had to be in the Ai
AVA “Ava?” She called out again, her voice trembling. Her hair was messy, her face disheveled, and her eyes widened like she’d seen a ghost. I laid the kids gently in their crib and stood up, opening my arms. She ran into my embrace with the speed of light. “You’re real.” Her body trembled as she clung to me, tears streaming from her face, “I’m sorry.” She whispered again and again as I rubbed her back. “I’m so sorry, Ava.” Zayn’s eyes were on us, and if this continued, he might start to suspect something, and so I whispered in her ears, “We will talk later. You kept them safe, that’s what matters right now.” And it was true. Despite everything, the betrayal, the lies, the secrets—she had protected my kids when I couldn’t. She went from trying to capture my kids to becoming their mother in my absence, and that alone was enough for me to forgive her. Zayn cleared his throat, and we broke away from the hug, “One would actually think you two are lovers.” He said.
AVA My eyes fluttered open due to a slight tap of Zayn’s hands. We were currently on our way back to New York and I had been sleeping all through. This was actually the first time I was sleeping properly in a while, perhaps because we left Abu-Dhabi. “Baby…wake up.” Zayn’s low and soothing voice whispered against my ears. “We have arrived.” “Mm… Can I just rest a little? Please…” I replied, stretching myself on the soft and plush bed. Zayn really did a thing on the furniture on the jet. Zayn didn’t respond, instead he slipped his hands beneath me and carried me as if I weighed nothing. I didn’t resist or complain. Instead, I rested my head against his chest. The warm air of New York filled my lungs and a smile formed on my face. Home sweet home. Zayn dropped me carefully inside the limousine, before turning around and entering. And then the driver took off. I crouched my head at the window, viewing the tall buildings and skyscrapers. If someone told me a mon
CARTERThe loud sound of the metal gate made me raise my head. One of the guards I despised so much was standing there, a look of disgust on his face, “You have a visitor. Your lawyer.”Once I got free, he was going to be the first person I would kill! Ever since I entered this shitty place, he had made sure to torment the hell out of my life. “Didn’t you hear me? I said your lawyer is waiting!” His voice rang out again, this time, cold and demanding. But I still didn’t respond. If he thinks he can command and tell me what to do, he has got to think again because I am only going to stand up when I want to. The previous day I had informed my lawyer to say that all the things I was accused of were done by my mother. She was old enough to die after all. I had given him access to necessary files and documents to prove that she had a hand in all this, and I was just an accomplice working for her. That way, I would get a lesser sentence and probably be sentenced for the two killings
AVATHREE DAYS LATERThe tiny droplets of water in the bathroom woke me up from sleep. The room was not only empty but strangely silent. The only sound that I could hear was the squeaking of the birds. My head felt heavy, and I stood up from the bed, taking slow stares to the bathroom. With each step closer, the sound of the droplets of water increased, and I could feel my heart beating so fast. On entering the bathroom, I screamed out loud, clutching my chest.Carter.He had a sinister smile on his face as usual. My hands and lips trembled in fear as I scanned him, in his hands was a knife—a bloody knife. His body was also covered in blood and I wondered whose blood it was. “How did you get into my room? You were arrested, so how…”“I came for revenge!” His chilly voice cut me short, and my eyes flickered to the tap that was dripping water and then to the bathtub and a scream tore out of my lips.Zayn in a pool of blood. “What did you do to him?”“What I am about to do to you!” H
