Chapter 3

Author: Splendid Flute
The dinner was held in the family’s most luxurious mansion, attended by gang leaders from all over New York.

I wore the fishtail gown Lorenzo picked out. The gown was heavy and cumbersome, making it hard to even walk.

He did it on purpose.

Wearing a gown like that meant I had no choice but to be a showpiece that could not even move around freely.

Elena, on the other hand, was dressed in a sleek dark red leather outfit, looking like a burning flame.

Holding a wine glass, she weaved through the big shots, engaging in laughter and conversation.

Everyone respected her, praising her as Lorenzo’s right-hand woman.

"Ladies and gentlemen!"

Lorenzo stood on the steps, full of vigor.

"Today, besides celebrating Elena joining the family, I also want to introduce you to two children."

The room fell silent.

Lorenzo picked up the little boy, pride written all over his face.

"This is my firstborn, Leo."

Boom!

Something erupted in my head.

Leo.

That was my twin brother's name.

When my family went bankrupt, my brother died in a car accident on the way home.

Lorenzo had sworn at my brother's grave.

He said that our first child would be named Leo, in memory of my brother.

But now, he had given that name to his illegitimate son with that woman.

I could not breathe. My heart felt like it was being squeezed by a fist.

The boy named Leo was an unruly child.

He dashed through the banquet hall with a toy gun, screaming and shooting at the guests' legs.

No one dared to tell him off. They could only smile.

Suddenly, he rushed in front of me.

Bang!

The little boy swung the toy gun and smashed it into an old wooden music box.

The music box was the only thing my late mother left me.

It shattered instantly, bits and pieces flying everywhere.

"So noisy!"

He made a face and raised his foot as if to stomp on the pieces.

"Enough!"

I could not hold back anymore and yelled at him. Then, I crouched down to pick up my mother’s keepsake.

"Waah—"

The little boy fell dramatically on the thick carpet and started bawling his eyes out.

He held his forehead like he was seriously hurt.

"What are you doing!"

Elena screamed and charged over like a madwoman, shoving me out of the way.

As I was wearing heels, I lost my balance and tumbled heavily to the floor.

My palm landed on the sharp gears of the music box, and blood flowed.

But no one cared that I was bleeding.

Lorenzo rushed over and picked up the boy who was still pretending to cry, his expression darkening horrifically.

"Vivian, have you lost your mind? He’s just a child! Do you have to do this to him?"

I held up my bleeding hand, tears streaming down my face.

"He broke my music box... it was my mother's..."

"Who cares about an old music box? It's worthless."

Lorenzo cut me off, his gaze icy and cutting.

"You'd knock over the family's heir for some dead woman's junk? Vivian, it seems I’ve spoiled you rotten. You've forgotten your place."

The guests started whispering and pointing.

They were all watching the jealous Don's wife make a fool of herself.

Elena cradled her child with slightly teary eyes, playing the victim.

"Vivian, I know you don’t like me, but my child is innocent. If you're mad, take it out on me. Don’t hit Leo."

Her words got Lorenzo even more riled up.

To establish Elena's authority in front of everyone and to solidify that illegitimate boy's position, Lorenzo did something that I would never forget for the rest of my life.

He pulled out the gold-plated Desert Eagle from his waist and slammed it on the table with a loud bang.

The place went silent.

He pointed at me, his voice devoid of any warmth.

"Get on your knees and apologize to Elena and Leo."

That's right, it was me.In the past five years, with Smith's help, I not only assisted the FBI in breaking up more than a dozen gang groups, I also used my father's former connections to rebuild my own business consulting firm.I was no longer anyone's wife, no longer anyone's accessory.I was Vivian Gambino.Uncle Carl had fully recovered.Today, he stood in the audience in a tailcoat, watching me proudly. After the speech, Smith came over.He was more mature than he was five years ago, the crow's feet at the corners of his eyes hid a tender affection for me."Shall we go somewhere?"He jingled the car keys in his hand.I nodded. I knew where we were going. The car stopped in front of a heavily guarded prison. This was a special privilege Smith obtained for me, and it was the period I would put down on my story. In the visitation room, I looked at Lorenzo through the thick bulletproof glass. If not for the name tag, I would not have recognized him.He was skin and bone

Lorenzo was locked up in the highest-security federal prison.Because the evidence was conclusive and his crimes involved terrorist activities, bail was denied. His legal team had attempted to bribe witnesses, but under Smith's tight supervision, no one dared to take the money.Besides, when the wall falls, everyone pushes. His subordinates who used to bow and grovel to him were now eager to sell him out to distance themselves from him.In the days leading up to the sentencing, Lorenzo aged rapidly. The slicked-back hair he used to be so proud of turned gray and messy, and that expensive suit had long been replaced by a rough prison garb. The only thing he did every day was stare blankly at the wall, replaying our three years like a movie in his mind.He remembered the shirts I ironed for him, always with a faint scent of lavender. He remembered coming home drunk after socializing, always finding a bowl of soup waiting for him on the table. He remembered the tiramisu he smash

That was his biggest secret, a private vault known only to him and Elena. The passcode was extremely complex and changed every three months."The passcode is... 1024."Smith casually stated the number sequence. That was my birthday, October 24th.Lorenzo used that passcode not because he loved me, but because he thought the birthday of a stupid woman like me was easy to remember. No one would suspect the mighty Don of using his wife's birthday as the passcode for his dirty money. How ironic. His contempt became the nail in his coffin."Vivian..."Lorenzo's voice started to tremble. He finally realized what the woman who wiped his study table every night had done."That's not all."Smith pressed a play button.Elena's sharp, malicious voice came from the voice recorder!"...Yes, I tampered with Vivian's brother's car. I cut the brake line halfway through...""...Lorenzo said if that old man had no heir, the shipping lines would be ours...""...Do it cleanly, don't let tha

He froze when he strode into the dressing room. The floor was littered with scraps of fabric. The expensive dresses that he was so proud of, meant to embellish my image to make him look good, had become mere trash on the ground. On the vanity, all the jewelry remained intact, neatly arranged. The only things missing were my comb and a few books. This extreme tidiness unsettled him more than chaos. On the table, the divorce papers lay quietly, with my signature pressed hard into the paper."Is she throwing a tantrum?"Lorenzo sneered. He crumpled the divorce papers and threw them in the trash."She's getting bold. She dares to run away from home now."He pulled out his phone and called me."Sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service."No longer in service?Lorenzo suddenly sobered up.I was a canary that he raised. He bought my SIM card for me. How could the number be out of service? He began to realize things were slipping out of his control."Find her! I

It was Agent Smith. He wasn't in uniform, but his righteousness exuded a pressure that made Elena step back. Then, several men in black trench coats rushed in.Smith walked up to me and wasted no time on idle chatter."Where is it?"I reached up and unclasped the expensive ruby necklace from my neck.It was the reward Lorenzo gave me yesterday. It would also be the beginning of his nightmare.I pressed down hard on the metal backing of the gem, revealing a microchip hidden inside. It contained all the accounts I had recreated from memory over the past three years, along with the core evidence I had copied from the computer in the study.I placed the chip in Smith's palm."All the names are here, including the bank executives involved in money laundering and the officials he bribed. The evidence is insurmountable, enough to send him to prison."Smith pocketed the chip, giving me a long look."What are your conditions?""First, the FBI must immediately take over the prison

"Get on my knees?"I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the man I had loved for three years. In front of the entire New York underworld, he wanted his wife to kneel before a mistress and an illegitimate child!"Never."I gritted my teeth, my eyes bloodshot as I glared at him defiantly.Lorenzo narrowed his eyes, a sure sign of his murderous intent."Vivian, don't make me do this. If you don't kneel, you can kiss your legs goodbye."The bodyguards closed in, grabbed my shoulders and forced me down.I struggled wildly. My hair came undone, making me look like a madwoman.Crack.My knees slammed onto the floor, shards of glass digging into my flesh.Blood instantly stained the white fabric of my dress, the pain seeping deep. But I didn't cry out. I continued to glare at Lorenzo."Enough!"Just as I was being forced to bow, an elderly figure rushed forward. It was Uncle Carl.My family's old butler, and someone who had watched me grow up.The man, well past sixty, th
