I’m in the backseat, between Marco and the window. “Port inspection,” Marco says again, like if he says it enough times I’ll change my mind. “Lena, you don’t have to do this. Let someone who can actually handle these things take over.” “I am someone,” I say, not looking at him. “And Dad made me Don. If he thought I couldn’t handle it, he wouldn’t have.” “And he would also want you alive.” I finally look at him. “I can handle it, Marco. I’m not a child.” “You’re my sister.” “And I’m also Don,” I say. “Which means I don’t get to hide. My phone buzzes. I check and it’s an unknown number. I open it. It’s a photo of our car, taken from above. And attached to it is a text: We are always watching. My blood instantly goes cold. I maintain a calm expression even though I’m internally freaking out. “Who’s it from?” Marco asks startling me out of my thoughts. “Spam,” I lie. “You were saying,” I s
Lena’s pov I stand in front of the stove, in nothing but shorts and a tank top. The eggs are hissing and I’m pretty sure that’s not supposed to happen. Maria leans against the counter, crossing her arms. She watches me plate the eggs like it’s the scariest thing ever. “Signora,” she says. “If you serve him that, he might die of food poisoning.” I laugh. “They’re fine. See? Golden brown.” “They’re black, Lena.” “Charcoal is a flavor.” Maria shakes her head. “Mio Dio. The great Don of the Virelli family, and you can’t make a decent omelet.” “Hey,” I point the spatula at her. “I’m trying. It’s the thought that counts.” “The thought won’t save him from salmonella.” We both burst out laughing. The kitchen feels so normal. Everything feels so peaceful. I set the tray down plating it with toast, eggs, and coffee. Maria bumps my shoulder. “Going to serve him yourself?” “Thought I would.” I shrug. “Be nice for once.” She smirks. “You know what they sa
Lena’s POV I stand between them, looking back and forth. I get that he knows everyone, seeing as this is his world. But the look they’re giving each other screams there’s a story there. So I slowly pull out of Dante’s embrace and turn to Camila. "So you two know each other?" I ask out loud. Dante doesn't answer. He just presses his fingers on my waist, anchoring me to him. Camila answers first. Of course she does. "Oh, Dante and I are old friends," she says, drawing the word out ‘old friends’. "From way back.” I force a smile out. I’m not dumb even in the slightest. I can tell from the way she’s looking at him that something went down between them. Something more than ‘old friends’. But Dante isn’t denying it. He’s just staring at her like he wants to put a bullet in her. I guess I’ll just have to trust him until I know what I’m dealing with. “Right,” I say. “Old friends.” Dante’s gaze flicks to me for half a second. Then he just snaps. "Stay away from my
Lena’s POV My hands tremble as I read the note. Panic starts to kick in. I thought all our problems would end after Dante killed Kane and Deluca. I quickly grab the note with two fingers, fold it, and shove it into my clutch. My reflection looks back at me in the mirror. “Get it together,” I whisper to myself. I unlock the door and slip out, checking both ways down the hall. I push open the other stall doors anyway, but I find nothing. Whoever left it is already gone, or they could still be out there. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of my neck. I need Dante. I hurriedly turn the corner too fast and slam right into someone. “Whoa…” “Shit, sorry….” I look up and see Camila from the bar. Her clutch goes flying and her lipstick rolls across the tile. “Are you okay?” she asks, crouching to grab it. “I didn’t see you there.” I try to control my breathing and calm myself down. “Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine. I just…” She stands and gives me a once-over. Her ey
Lena’s POV I sit in the back of Dante’s black SUV. He has his hand on my thigh, slowly rubbing it. Ricardo is the one driving us tonight, and it feels so awkward talking while he’s within earshot. "You're bouncing your leg," Dante says. I force myself to stop. "I'm not nervous." "Liar." He squeezes my thigh. "Say what you're thinking." I exhale. "The other Dons. What if they don't take me seriously? What if they laugh? What if they think I'm just... a woman." Dante turns to me. “They’ll look,” he says. “They’ll talk and they’ll test you. That’s what men like that do.” My stomach flips. “And?” “And it doesn’t matter.” His thumb drags up, under the hem of my dress. “You’re not there to be liked, Lena. You’re there to be remembered walk in like you own the room.” I swallow. "That's easy for you to say. You always knew you would do this.” "I was born into blood and rules I didn't choose," he says. "You chose this. That makes you meaner than any of them." Something
Lena’s POV Three days later. I’m standing at the end of the range Dante built behind the estate. He has paper silhouettes lined up on the fence for target practice. I try my best to keep my hands steady, but my heart refuses to cooperate. “Feet should be shoulder-width apart,” he says against my ear. His chest is pressed to my back and one hand covers mine on the grip, the other adjusts my elbow. “Don’t jerk the trigger. Squeeze it.” I breathe out and fire. *pop.* The bullet hits just outside the red. “Better,” he says. “Again.” I fire two more times and one hits the shoulder. The last one hits dead center. I turn my head to look at him and smile. “Did I do good?” His eyes darken. I can tell he’s proud without showing it. “You did good.” “I want a reward,” I say, playfully. He chuckles. “I’ll give it to you later.” My stomach flips. “What kind of reward?” He takes the gun from me and sets the safety. “Depends on how good you keep being.” I roll my eyes
