Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: The Red
On the tenth day, I learned Gian had arrived in Layshire from the news. Tabloids were flooded with photos of him stepping off his private jet. Every headline was written in that dramatic, clickbait style.

"Why Is the Don of an Old Poralia Family in Layshire?"

"Are the Lucentis Making a Move on Layshire?"

Soon, a video went viral.

A reporter shouted at Gian, asking why he'd suddenly come to Layshire. Gian gave the camera a small smile and answered, "I'm here to take my fiancee home."

Immediately, the identity of Gian's fiancee became the biggest secret every mafia member in Layshire wanted to crack.

At 9:00 pm that night, a knock sounded at my door—right on time.

I took a deep breath and opened it. Before I could get a good look at the person, a hand yanked me into an embrace. A familiar yet also unfamiliar scent filled my nose.

Steel-like arms locked around me, holding me tight. Then, a pair of burning lips crashed into mine, but it lasted only a second before they pulled away.

Gian's voice came out low and husky. "You're already divorced, vero?"

"I—" I managed only one word before he silenced me again with another kiss.

Between breaths, Gian murmured, "Non importa… I missed you so much…"

By the time Gian brought me to the airport, my lips were swollen.

We hadn't even gotten out of the car when I saw the swarm of reporters outside the terminal. Nervous, my hands started shaking again.

Gian held my hand gently. "Though I'd love for the whole world to know you're my fiancee, you're not in the best condition right now. I'll let you off the hook this time."

So, he wrapped his coat around me and led me straight through the flashing cameras and up the steps onto the private plane.

The moment I sat down in the plane bound for Poralia, I was still a little dazed. I couldn't believe that I was actually leaving with Gian.

On impulse, I checked the surveillance feed for the Vitale mansion.

Erico, Joanna, Marcus, and a few of Erico's usual no-good buddies were drinking in the dining room. Erico looked like he'd had quite a few already and was sprawled out on the couch, lazily scrolling through his phone.

Suddenly, he sat up straight, frowning at the screen.

"Marcus, take a look at this. Doesn't Gian Lucenti's fiancee look a little like Nina?"

Marcus took the phone, glanced at it, then shot a quick look at a visibly annoyed Joanna.

"There are plenty of women who look like la signora… I mean, like Nina. Last week, I saw a model on the street who had the same figure as her, too."

"That's true," Erico said, sinking back into the couch. "Nina said she was leaving not long ago, so I got paranoid. Other than here, where else could she possibly go? Besides, how would she even know Gian Lucenti?"

Marcus laughed. "Exactly. You're overthinking things. Nina's probably still crying in that old apartment right now, waiting for you to go pick her up."

The words seemed to reassure Erico. He guffawed loudly, then pulled the sullen Joanna close and whispered something to her. Her face flushed instantly, and she gave him a playful smack on the chest.

He swiftly tapped his phone a few times, then tossed it aside.

At that moment, my phone buzzed with an incoming message from him.

"Joanna says the ski resorts in Scalmaria are amazing. Be good, and I'll take you there soon."

I yanked out the SIM card, uninstalled the surveillance app, and powered off my phone.

I wondered what his expression would be like when he eventually found out that I'd really left. I couldn't wait to find out.

Gian's bodyguards stepped forward immediately, but he raised a hand to stop them.Turning to me, he asked, "Do you want to talk to him?"I gave it some thought before nodding. "Right here is fine.""What will it take for you to come back?" Erico asked, getting straight to the point. "I know I made mistakes, Nina. I really do. I'll break up with Joanna and return the docks to the Rosettis. I'll also publicly apologize to you—whatever you want, I'll do it.""I want you to let go," I said. "Erico, we're over. I'm married to Gian now, and I love him.""You love him?"He laughed bitterly. "How long have you known him? One month? We were together for four years, Nina! Four years!""No, it's not just been one month… but that has nothing to do with why we're no longer together. In the four years we were together, you treated me like an accessory, like a possession of yours, Erico. You were used to owning me, to controlling me. "Now that I've escaped your control, you're the one who's

"Erico!" Joanna looped her arm through Erico's, but her eyes were fixed firmly on me. "Why is she here? And… with that Polarian?"Her voice carried over, and everyone nearby could hear her.Gian glanced at her, giving her a look one would give an annoying insect. "And this is…""Joanna Rosetti," Erico answered mechanically."Oh." Gian nodded once, then dismissed her entirely. He turned back to me, voice softening, "If you want to visit your parents' graves, I'll go with you tomorrow."Joanna's face flushed crimson when she realized she had been ignored. She tore her arm from Erico's grasp and stepped right up to me."Long time no see, Nina," she said, smiling sweetly, but her eyes dripped venom. "I heard you got married? Wow, that was fast! Then again, for a woman like you… with your defects… just snagging a man at all is an achievement."She deliberately raised her voice. "Have you finally fixed that trembling problem of yours? Or does your new husband not mind marrying someone

"Don Lucenti." Erico finally released my wrist and turned to Gian, barely maintaining a basic level of civility. "This is a private matter between Nina and me.""She's my wife now," Gian said with a smile, though the warmth didn't reach his eyes. "Her matters are my matters."Erico's expression twisted. He looked at me, his voice dropping low. "Nina, stop messing around. Tonight is important. Papa is waiting for us. Let's go in first, and everything else can wait until after the party…""There's nothing left to talk about," I interrupted him. "Erico, I've already told you—we're over. And I've told you that I'm married, too."I raised my left hand, the wedding band sparkling under the light. "I don't understand why you're still bothering me."Erico stared at the wedding band, like it was something he couldn't comprehend. Then a short, desperate-sounding laugh escaped him. "Married? You've only been gone a month, and you're already married to someone else? Is this revenge, Nina? Jus

I felt a little nervous on the flight back to Layshire.Gian held my hand. "What are you afraid of?""I don't know," I said, staring out at the clouds. "Maybe I'm scared of seeing Erico again, or maybe I'm scared of going back to that place.""It's different this time," he said. "You're Donna Lucenti. My wife. No one can look down on you anymore."When the plane landed in Layshire, it happened to be raining.Gian's bodyguards disembarked first to clear the way, but the reporters still packed the exit. All kinds of cameras were aimed at us, and the questions flew at us like bullets."Don Lucenti, is this trip to Layshire to expand your business empire?""Is this lady your newlywed wife?""Rumor has it you're moving into the Layshire market—is that true?"Gian kept his arm around my shoulders, never slowing or stopping. This time, I didn't duck my head or hide beneath his coat. Instead, I kept my chin high and let the cameras catch my calm expression, the wedding band on my ring

The plane touched down in Sorella Isle just as the afternoon sun was blazing over the Ludirean Sea.Gian's estate perched on the cliffs of Catemarina."This will be your home from now on," he said, placing the keys in my palm. "Every room is open to you."The estate was vast, and the staff were respectful but kept a polite distance.Gian was busy every day, managing the Lucenti family affairs. But he always reserved dinner time for me. We'd sit on the terrace, talking about trivial things. He never asked me about my four years with the Vitales, and I never asked about the scar between his brows.…A week later, Gian took me to City Hall. Half an hour later, we walked out holding a fresh marriage certificate. A simple platinum band adorned my ring finger, with "N.L. 11.28" engraved inside—my initials and today's date. The realization that I had just married myself off again left me a little dazed.Gian held my hand, smiling gently.…Our days were so peaceful they almost felt
