Chapter 3

Autor: Beloved Farewell
"I'll treat him."

Hendrick and Florence froze, and the crowd instantly went quiet.

Florence's smug smile vanished in an instant. She hadn't expected me to "give in" so fast.

"Finally, you're acting like a proper doctor."

She snorted, lifted her chin, and turned to lead the way.

Hendrick shot me a sharp look as if to say, "Why didn't you just do this earlier?"

I followed them to the VIP ward.

A small crowd of onlookers had followed, eager to watch things unfold.

Inside, I saw the supposedly "severely injured" child.

He was perched on the bed with legs crossed. Leaning back on the bed, he was totally absorbed in his tablet.

A tiny cartoon bandage covered his knee.

There was not a hint of pain expressed on his face.

Florence, noticing me staring at her son, went full drama mode. She pointed at the bandage and shrieked.

"Look at him! Just look! Do you see how badly he's hurt? There's so much blood! You heartless monster! You almost ruined the critical window for treatment!"

She made a scraped knee sound like a catastrophic injury.

The boy, instead of cowering at his mother's screaming, hopped off the bed and ran straight at me. He stomped his little foot against my shin.

A dull throb shot up my leg. I frowned.

"You monster! How dare you make my mom angry! I'm going to tell my dad to fire you!"

Florence didn't stop him. She patted his head and gushed with approval. "Good boy! You know how to protect me."

I stared at the absurd scene, my expression growing colder.

Then, I crouched and grabbed the boy's ankle, saying icily, "Don't move. I need to check you."

Before I could touch him, he yelped like I had shocked him with electricity and immediately started wailing.

"Ah! She hurt me! Mom! She's hurting me on purpose!"

Florence went ballistic. She charged at me and kicked me to the floor. "You wretch! How dare you hurt my son to get revenge!"

As my head hit the cold floor hard, everything blurred for a second.

Pain stole my breath.

I slowly pushed myself up and brushed the dust off my coat.

Then, I looked at the boy, who was still pretending to cry, and smiled coldly.

"Ms. Crater, if I had come a little later, your son's wound probably would have scabbed over on its own."

Florence exploded. "What do you mean? You just don't want to treat my son!"

Hendrick's face was black with fury. He pointed at me, unable to speak.

Florence, pointing at my nose and crying theatrically, shouted to the crowd, "Look, everyone! How could she be a doctor? She's refusing to save lives while making all those excuses! My son is so precious. I'm sure she's jealous! She's trying to hurt my son!"

The crowd, thoroughly stirred up, turned to glare at me.

"Oh goodness, how could a doctor hurt a child like that?"

"Exactly! She was the one in the wrong, and yet she's taking revenge?"

Florence, triumphant, strode toward me and stared down at me while saying domineeringly, "Whether you want to or not, you're gonna treat him! Treat my son's wound! And make sure he's happy with it!"

I looked at her smug face and the judging eyes around us. Suddenly, it all seemed ridiculous to me.

In the next moment, I reached into my pocket and slowly pulled out my work ID.

The crowd gasped. I opened it and held it up.

It had a black cover with a gold-embossed national emblem on it, as well as the words "Rose Jennings, Forensic Pathologist."

"I'm not refusing to treat your son," I said, calm but loud enough for everyone to hear.

"But I'm a forensic doctor."

I paused, scanning Florence and her son, who was still pretending to cry.

"All my patients are dead. Are you sure you want me to treat your son?"

  • Forced to Heal, but I'm Actually a Forensic Doctor   Chapter 9

"Word is, Florence completely lost it that day. She really thought her son was the only heir of the Crater family. Turns out, it was all a joke."I paused mid-bite, then popped a piece of meat into my mouth. Her supposed trump card had been a joke from the start. This world was never just black and white. I thought this chapter was closed, until that afternoon happened.I had just stepped out of the forensic center when the roar of an engine ripped through the air behind me. The sound grew louder as it closed in on me, carrying a reckless, almost desperate fury.I instinctively turned.A massive truck barreled straight toward me, and behind the wheel was Florence, her face twisted with rage and madness. In a flash, I dove to the side. With a loud boom, the truck roared past me, almost grazing my skin. It slammed into the metal guardrail, crumpling the front end. In the next second, smoke curled from the engine.Florence collapsed onto the steering wheel unconscious, blood

For days, the online storm didn't die down.Hendrick was suspended pending investigation. The PR team at Cornerstone Group was in full panic mode.As for me, I hadn't left the forensic lab in two straight days. The Southside Reservoir case was far more complicated than anyone had imagined.I had just stepped out of the autopsy room, pulled off my mask, and was about to catch my breath when a figure lunged at me.It was Florence. She looked different. A few days of stress and scandal had stripped away the polish. Her makeup was smeared, her designer clothes wrinkled, her hair a mess, and there were dark circles under her eyes. Gone was her old swagger."Ms. Jennings! Please! Please, just let me go!"Sobbing uncontrollably, she clutched my arm, trembling like a leaf in the wind. My coworkers' heads snapped toward us, but this time their looks weren't of amusement. They were worried, silently asking me if they should call security."I was wrong! I was mistaken!"She actually tri

Daniel sidestepped her without so much as a flicker of concern."I'll repeat myself. I'm with the City Criminal Investigation Unit. I don't handle doctor-patient disputes."His voice was cold enough to cut glass as his eyes locked on Florence."I'm only asking who hit her."The sheer weight of his presence silenced Florence's wails. She shivered and instinctively tried to duck behind Douglas.A deadly silence fell over the ward. The hands of every onlooker seemed to move as if on cue. All of them pointed toward Florence, who was frozen in place.Douglas' face drained of color. He stashed his phone and forced a weak smile while stepping forward."Captain Lang, this was just a minor misunderstanding. My wife got a little emotional. I've already explained to Mr. Jones…""Mr. Cornerstone."Daniel cut him off, each word heavy as he said, "Your family member hit a member of our police force. This isn't a minor misunderstanding."He turned, pointing at the red, swollen mark on my f

"This matter ends here after you do that."Douglas started off trying to humiliate me with his power. He didn't bother to understand the truth because to him, truth didn't matter. What mattered was his pride and his wife's feelings.I looked at his arrogant face and, instead of feeling fearful, I smiled. Then, I stepped toward him slowly. Nothing enraged me more than people who abused their authority."Mr. Cornerstone, right?"I met his gaze and addressed the entire room deliberately."You're asking me to apologize under pressure, in front of witnesses. That's coercion, and it's not a good look, legally. You're saying all this in front of a crowd with cameras rolling."I lifted my chin slightly, my smile cooling."You really want that to happen?"Douglas's face darkened slowly. He had navigated the corporate world for decades, but this was the first time someone had dared challenge him in front of so many witnesses. A ruthless gleam appeared in his eyes."Dr. Wyckoff.

"Don't waste your breath, Dr. Wyckoff."The guy grinned as he spoke in a voice that was low, but it carried down the corridor clearly enough for everyone to hear."From the moment you forced this forensic pathologist to apologize, I've been live-streaming the entire thing. I even came up with a title. Hospital Director Forces Forensic Pathologist to Perform Surgery on a Living Patient to Appease a Donor. Pretty catchy, huh?"Hendrick swayed on his feet, nearly collapsing.I slipped my phone back into my pocket and stepped toward him. Then, I stared straight into his eyes, which were full of panic and despair, and spoke slowly. "Dr. Wyckoff, in your eagerness to please a donor, you abused your authority, forced a non-clinical staff member to perform illegal medical procedures, and committed acts of personal and professional intimidation against me."I paused, letting the weight of my words sink in. Then my voice went even colder."The hospital administration and the local health

The moment the words left my mouth, the VIP ward went completely silent.Every pair of eyes locked onto the ID in my hand.Florence's face turned bright red. Her finger shook as she pointed at me."Y-You're lying! You just don't want to treat my son! That's a fake ID you're using to scare me!"Hendrick's face had gone completely gray. He probably never imagined that in trying to please a wealthy donor, he had angered a "doctor" from a field he didn't understand.I ignored them and slipped the ID back into my pocket. Then, right in front of everyone, I pulled out a fresh pair of latex gloves from my coat pocket and slipped them on, one hand at a time, in a slow and deliberate manner. The gloves fit snugly, molding to my skin.Step by step, I walked toward the boy, who was hiding behind Florence and still pretending to cry."Don't be afraid."I crouched down, examining the tiny bandage on his knee. My voice was sharp and clinical. It was the same tone I used at the dissection t
