Chapter 4

Author: Doodle
"Hands off her!" one of her goons bellowed, his boot slamming into my ribs with a force that knocked the air from my lungs.

Others swarmed, pummeling me with fists and feet until I collapsed, my body screaming in pain.

Morgan, coughing from my grip, wasn't done. "Nobody has ever dared lay a finger on me. You'll pay for that."

She grabbed a microphone stand from the stage and smashed it into my side. The pain was blinding, but I bit my tongue, refusing to cry out.

My eyes locked onto her, my voice low and deadly. "You'll regret this!"

"Still mouthing off?" she snarled, swinging the stand again and again.

As I teetered on the edge of consciousness, a shout cut through the chaos. "Mr. Griffin's here!"

The room froze, the blows halting mid-air. The crowd parted, their eyes turning to the entrance.

Morgan's smug mask melted into fake tears. Clutching her neck, she ran to Nick, sobbing like a damsel in a bad movie. "You're finally here, Nick! I was so scared!"

She threw herself into his arms and shivered. Nick held her tightly, his face stormy but his voice soft. "Don't worry, babe. I've got you."

Those words, once meant for me, now pierced my heart. Nick had been the perfect boyfriend. He was attentive, kind, and successful, partly thanks to my family's support.

Whenever I needed him, he'd drop everything and rush to my side. He'd hold me and whisper, "Don't worry, babe. I've got you."

Now the same words were for Morgan, the irony excruciating. Love, it seemed, could be faked.

After comforting her, he demanded, "What happened?"

"It's those haters I told you about," Morgan sniffled. "They accused me of selling fakes, refused to pay up, and caused a scene, ruining our business. The sick one faked an illness to scam us, then actually died. The other one went crazy and tried to kill me."

She wiped her fake tears and added, "Look at my neck. If it weren't for the team, you'd have lost me."

She shifted all the blame onto Benedetta and me.

Her team backed her up. "Yeah, that's what happened. These two came to cause trouble. Mr. Griffin, you've got to stand up for Morgan. Or anyone will think they can mess with her."

They called us unreasonable, claiming we deserved what happened.

Nick's face darkened. "Where are they? Show me."

Morgan dragged him through the crowd, pointing at Benedetta's lifeless body and me. "It's these two lowlifes."

The video ended, and Nick's phone slipped from his hands. He stumbled to the ruined portrait, frantically wiping away the cola and dirt, searching for proof it wasn't Benedetta."Nick, what are you doing? It's dirty!" Morgan gasped, trying to pull him back. But Nick was unreachable, consumed by grief. When he finally cleaned the portrait and saw the familiar face, he collapsed. "Benedetta? How could this be? I don't believe it."Tearfully and frantically, he turned to me. "You're lying, right?"Holding his gaze, I enunciated, "She came back from Verosfall to surprise you. Morgan killed her, and she never had the chance to see you again. Now you and the murderer have ruined her memorial."My words crushed his last hope. He reflected on his actions until guilt and despair overwhelmed him."Benedetta!" he screamed, slamming his head against the floor, clawing at the dirtied ground, and slapping himself in anguish. "I'm sorry, Benedetta. I was wrong."Morgan was terrified. "I didn'

Morgan's boldness knew no bounds, with Nick backing her every step. His words sparked outrage among the relatives."What do you mean, Nick?""She killed your sister, and you're letting her disrupt the funeral?""I thought you were absent from grief. You're such a monster!"Nick shrugged, unfazed. "I'm cutting ties with Jennifer soon. Her family's fate isn't my concern. She deserves this for crossing Morgan."He moved to Morgan's side, indulging her antics. Emboldened, Morgan rushed to Benedetta's portrait, livestreaming her insults. "A memorial for a dead nobody? How pathetic!"She grabbed a cola, poured it over the portrait, and stomped on it. "Cheers to a great day, fam!"My phone buzzed with an email from Benedetta, titled: [Nick, a little surprise for your opening.]It was a timed email, a gift she'd prepared but never delivered. I forwarded it to Nick without hesitation....Nick's mother, Mabel Griffin, arrived. Her face was dark with rage. "What are you doing?"Nick

My injuries were severe, so I was rushed to the hospital.Nick didn't come along. Instead, he took Morgan out to ease her stress.Three days later, she sent me a friend request. Curious, I accepted it.In no time, she flooded me with photos and videos, showing Nick splurging on luxury goods for her, cooking her meals, massaging her, and tucking her into bed. There were also shots of them on a romantic beach vacation, kissing under fireworks.[Thanks to you and that dead girl, Nick has been extra sweet to make up for it. He buys me everything and plans to announce our relationship at the hub's opening. He says his family is great and will love me. Once they approve, he'll dump you and marry me.]I sneered, replying: [You'll never get his family's approval.]Then I blocked her.Seconds later, Nick called, furious. "Why are you so vicious? Morgan was just sharing her happiness. Why curse her like that? Just because my family likes you doesn't mean you can spite her. She's pregnant

Nick showed no guilt for his betrayal. Far from it, he accused me of sabotaging his plans. My heart was already numb, so his words didn't hurt me. I laughed bitterly. "Nick, you've really opened my eyes!"Tears mixed with blood ran down my face, not for him, but for Benedetta, who died never knowing his true nature.I pointed to her body, my voice heavy with grief. "Young Bennie is dead, killed by your lover!"I expected shock, grief, and collapse. But he barely glanced at her, assuming it was my relative."She came here to cause trouble. Her death isn't anyone's fault but her own," he argued. "Sign a release stating she died from an illness during her stunt, not because of Morgan. Morgan is young, with a bright future. I won't let a dead girl ruin that."His indifference chilled me, his face devoid of empathy.I shook my head, my voice steady with disappointment. "I'm not the one to sign anything. You are."He frowned, irritation flaring. "It's your relative who died. What goo

Morgan's smile widened as the problem was solved smoothly. She nestled into Nick's arms, her voice saccharine. "Well done, honey. Lowlifes like them need their lessons so they won't dare mess with us again."Nick chuckled, tapping her nose playfully. "Whatever you say, babe."Benedetta's cold body, Morgan's smug grin, and Nick's indifference wove a suffocating web around me, but I dragged myself up, wiping blood and tears from my face, revealing a countenance both familiar and alien to them.My gaze pierced through the crowd, locking directly onto Nick. My voice was hoarse but steady. "Nick Griffin, you really think you're untouchable?" He froze, his eyes narrowing as he finally recognized me.Before he could speak, Morgan snapped, "Who are you to say his name? Beaten to a pulp and still trying to catch attention? You're shameless!"I ignored her, staring straight at Nick. "Do I have the right to say your name?"Silence gripped him, heavy and suffocating. Morgan lost it. "You

Nick's gaze swept over Benedetta's still form and my broken, bloodied body, but he didn't recognize us.A flicker of disgust crossed his face. "What a mess."A life was lost, and the other person was badly injured. Yet all he could muster was disdain.I recalled a time when we saw an injured stray cat in the street. Despite his usual fastidiousness, Nick rushed it to a vet, tending to it tirelessly. And he often spoke of his charity work, helping the weak and the poor. He claimed that his wealth was for the greater good, which convinced me that he was a kind-hearted person. His coldness now made me question everything. Perhaps, I had never truly known him. The man I loved was a monster. He used to go out of his way to help a stray cat and would go to poor villages to help those in need. It was hard to believe he had such a heartless side.Morgan, seizing the moment, whined, "I just wanted to build my career here. Why did they do this? They wanted to ruin me and this place. What
