Chapter 20 The Door Is Shut Tight

Just hearing Song Meiqi speak, her stupidity was evident.

She was already in her 20s, yet she was still unable to filter her own thoughts.

She had just blurted out whatever was on her mind.

Putting aside the matter of whether or not what she said was true, wouldn't it be disgraceful for Jiang Liu to question him like this in front of everyone?

Was that supposed to be a confession? She was obviously here to spoil Jiang Liu's day.

Both Qin Wanyu and Wang Junxian looked at Jiang Liu simultaneously. They believed that Song Meiqi's words would have driven him mad with rage.

Jiang Liu did not become enraged, however.

He took a long drag of his cigar before replying coldly, "Are we even that close in the first place?"

Song Meiqi was speechless.

Her eyes were wide open with shock, as if she was unable to comprehend that those cold words had come from Jiang Liu.

He was not really wrong, however. The Songs were direct relatives with the Xies, but not that close to the Jiangs.

Even so, Song Meiqi had met Jiang Liu many times in person, even though they did not have many personal dealings with each other.

Song Meiqi's mother had also expressed her admiration of Jiang Liu to Madam Jiang a few times before.

She did not believe that Jiang Liu would be clueless about her feelings toward him.

The last time they met was one month ago, at Old Madam Wang's 80th birthday celebration.

Even though they were not seated at the same table, Song Meiqi had walked over to Jiang Liu and greeted him. At that time, he smiled and nodded.

She had a sense that Jiang Liu didn't hate her, even if he probably didn't like her.

Why was he saying something so hurtful to her now?

Gao He, on the other hand, was rejoicing at his nemesis's misfortune. "Look at you... What a disgrace you are! My good brother here isn't close with you at all. Stop trying to force yourself on him!" he said with a wave of his hand.

Song Meiqi was no longer in the mood to argue with him. She pouted and stared at Jiang Liu with a pitiful look.

"Brother Jiang Liu, the Huas have begged my aunt to get Brother Dongyang to marry one of their daughters, so that the Xies can help reduce their cash-flow problems. Why are you allowing them to succeed in their plan? My... my family..."

Jiang Liu rose up from his seat without even waiting for Song Meiqi to finish speaking. He glanced at Qin Wanyu, Wang Junxian, and the others.

"Let's go to another venue. It's far too noisy here."

He then left with his friends in tow.

Gao He went along with them after settling the other guests down.

Song Meiqi was still standing there in a daze, feeling as though everyone was staring at her...

She came from a reputable background, and it was strange that she had such a strong urge to look for Jiang Liu and tell him such mindless things.

Jiang Liu really disliked having to engage in verbal debates, especially with such empty-headed women.

In such a situation, he would rather go to a quiet club where he could chat with his close friends over a few bottles of European wine.

In the end, Wang Junxian footed the bill, even though they had been teasing Jiang Liu about paying for their expenses tonight.

Aside from that, each of them transferred 300,000 dollars to Jiang Liu via WeChat.

It was their wedding gift to him...

Jiang Liu smiled and did not speak much about it.

They kept each other company until midnight, when Qin Wanyu drove him back home.

Qin Wanyu was still perturbed as to why his friend would get married so suddenly and asked him about it along the way.

"What about it? Then should I get a divorce?" Jiang Liu grinned. He was seated beside Qin Wanyu in the front of the car.

"No, but it happened so quickly that I still haven't got used to the fact that you're married... We said that we would remain single forever, but you just went ahead without me," Qin Wanyu teased.

Jiang Liu smiled and remained silent.

"I'm really curious now as to what sort of person the Fifth Young Mistress of the Hua Family is. How was she able to get you to do something like that?"

Qin Wanyu knew Jiang Liu very well. His friend was definitely not as selfless as Lei Feng. Any woman who could lead him to marry her right on the spot had to be an exceptional person.

Jiang Liu kept smiling quietly.

Back at Ripple Pavilion in the Villa of Abundant Youth...

The lights of the hall were still dimly lit when Jiang Liu got back. The villa was extremely quiet.

He walked up the stairs to Hua Sheng's room and tried to push the door open, only to realize... that it had been locked from within, just as he expected.
