Chapter 4

Author: Spring Pool
After leaving the hotel, I took a cab home.

My phone vibrated the whole way, but I did not look at it. I turned it off and leaned against the car window, eyes closed.

When I got home, the whole place was decorated in anticipation of the wedding. Ribbons hung in the living room, and cutouts of congratulatory words covered the walls.

The pots of flowers on the balcony were something Shane had bought from the flower market when he knew I was in a bad mood. He said more greenery at home would make a person feel better.

I went into the bedroom and began packing.

When I opened a drawer, I saw the photo album at the bottom. The first photo was from the day we moved into our bridal home. I was standing in the middle of the living room in a white dress, and Shane had his arm around my shoulders, smiling with bright pride.

He looked like a hero returning from victory.

He had said, "Yuna, I can finally give you a home."

I did not turn another page. I closed the album and put it back where I found it.

As I was halfway packing, someone opened the door.

Shane rushed into the bedroom. When he saw what I was doing, he grabbed my wrist hard. "Where are you going?"

"Isn't it obvious?" I said, laughing coldly, my eyes full of scorn. "Your mother doesn't like me anyway. I'm moving out to make room for you and Nora."

His face darkened immediately. "Yuna, is this really necessary? How long are you going to keep causing a scene? Do you know how many guests are waiting at the wedding venue? And now you're telling me you want to leave? Do you have to ruin everything today?"

I stared at him without saying a word.

He took a deep breath, and his attitude softened a little. But his words stabbed into my heart all the same. "Yuna, when your father cheated back then, didn't your mother still marry him and give birth to you? If your mother could endure it, why can't you accept this?"

My whole body went stiff. "Shane Evans… I dare you to say that again."

He turned his face away, his tone irritable. "Am I wrong? Your mother could put up with your father, but you can't put up with me…"

"Shut up!" My voice was shaking. "My mother stayed because she was too gentle! She put up with him her whole life for me! Do you know how much pain she had to live with?! I won't walk the same path she did because I promised her I would make myself happy!"

Shane was about to say something when footsteps came from outside the door.

Nora had arrived, still catching her breath.

The moment she came in, she rushed to me and grabbed my arm. "Yuna, don't leave. This is all my fault. I'll leave! I'll never appear in front of you again! I'll give everything back to you..."

"Nora, what's the point of saying this now?" I tried to pull my hand free, but she held on even tighter. "You slept with him. You had his child. Do you still expect me to pretend nothing happened and keep acting like we're sisters?"

She shook her head desperately, her nails digging deep into my skin. "Yuna, no... Listen to me. I truly know I was wrong now. Don't go..."

"Enough. Let go!" I pulled my hand away forcefully.

At the same time, Nora lost her balance and fell backward, hitting the floor hard. She cried out in pain. "Ah!"

"Yuna, what's wrong with you?!" Shane shoved me aside roughly.

I staggered back several steps, and my lower back hit the edge of the vanity. A sharp pain surged up through me, but he did not even lift his head.

He simply crouched down to help Nora up, his eyes full of worry. "Nora, are you all right? Where are you hurt?"

Nora leaned against him and cried. "My back hurts so much, and my stomach doesn't feel right."

"Don't be scared. I'll take you to the hospital." Shane picked her up and walked out. When he passed by me, his steps paused. "No matter what, she's still your best friend. You've gone too far! The wedding is canceled for today. When you come to your senses, we'll get married then."

With that, the door slammed shut loudly.

The bedroom fell quiet once more, with only the sound of my own breathing remaining. I slowly straightened my back by pushing against the vanity, my lower back still throbbing in pain.

When my eyes landed on the photo of us in wedding attire on the wall, I laughed. But as I laughed, tears streamed down, and my eyes burned.

I wiped my cheeks dry and picked up my suitcase, leaving that house without looking back.

When I got into the cab, the driver asked where I was going.

I looked back at the neighborhood once and said coldly, "The airport."

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 10

Shane stayed in Windsoar for two weeks. He tried every method he could think of. Flowers, gifts, kneeling, apologies… But I did not want any of it anymore. On the seventh day after he started, he finally could not take it anymore. That day, I came out of the guesthouse as usual, planning to take a walk by the Grand Lake. Shane was crouching at the door. When he saw me come out, he stood up abruptly. But he got up too fast, and his legs became numb for one moment, and he dropped straight to his knees in front of me. I stopped and looked down at him. "Yuna." His voice trembled, just like his entire body. "Tell me. What exactly do I have to do before you'll forgive me? Tell me. No matter how hard it is, I'll do it. Even if you want me dead." I looked into his eyes and said nothing. He suddenly lifted his hand and slapped himself hard. "This slap is for you. I should never have gotten involved with your best friend." He slapped himself again. "This slap is for your moth

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 9

Shane did not leave. He stayed in Windsoar as well. Every morning at seven, he would crouch outside my guesthouse, waiting for me to come out. Sometimes I would wander through the ancient town. Sometimes I would go to the Grand Lake and sit there in silence. He followed me from a short distance. He did not dare to come too close, yet he was also unwilling to stay too far away. On the third day, he bought a huge bouquet of hydrangeas and left it at the guesthouse front desk with a note: [You said this color was your favorite.] When I passed by the front desk, I glanced at it but did not take it. On the fourth day, he found out I liked the rosehip pastries from a shop in town. He waited in line for two hours, bought a box, and then left it on the steps outside the guesthouse. When I came back, I walked around it. On the fifth day, it started raining in Windsoar. He stood under the eaves across the street, holding an umbrella despite already being soaked through. When I ca

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 8

It was evening the next day when Shane arrived in Windsoar. He followed the alley from his colleague's photo until he reached the fabric shop. He stopped at the door, panting as he looked inside. No customers were in the shop. He went in and asked the owner. "Excuse me. Did a young woman come by recently? She was wearing a gray trench coat with long hair, about this tall…" He gestured to show my height. The owner thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yes. That young lady came here to buy some fabric. She said she wanted to make a bed for her cat at home." "Where is she staying? Do you know?" Shane asked. The owner shook her head. "I'm not sure about that, but it looks like she's staying here long term. She has come to our shop several times, actually." Shane thanked her and left. He stood in the middle of the alley, not knowing which way to go. So, he wandered through the ancient town without a plan. Every time he passed a guesthouse or inn, he would look up, hoping t

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 7

Shane began looking for me everywhere he could think of. First, he went to the cafe where we first met. It was in a small alley near the university district. The shop still looked the same. Green plants crept down from the balcony above while a wind chime hung by the door. He pushed the door open. The owner was still the same warm woman who loved to smile, and she paused when she saw him. "Shane? You haven't been here in years." "Ma'am, did Yuna... come by recently?" He asked. The owner thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No. That girl hasn't been here in a long time either." Shane thanked her and left. Then he went to the movie theater where we watched our first movie together. That old theater had been torn down years ago, and a mall had been built in its place. He stood at the entrance for a while, watching people come and go, but not one of them looked familiar. Finally, he went to the beach where we had decided to become a couple. The winter wind from t

One week passed, and Shane slowly realized something was wrong. During that week, he did not receive a single message or phone call from me. Even my social feed was silent, as if I had disappeared from the world. He could not sit still anymore. He left work early and drove to my office building. He parked by the roadside, leaned against the car door, lit a cigarette, and waited, his eyes fixed on the exit. By half-past five, employees started to come out. At six, the sky began to darken. Soon, it was seven o'clock, and most of the lights in the building had been turned off. However, he still had not seen me. Shane walked into the lobby and went to the front desk. "Hello, I'm looking for Yuna Sutton." The young woman at the front desk looked up at him, her expression a little strange. "Yuna Sutton? You mean Ms. Yuna, one of our directors? She has already resigned." Shane's mind went blank for an instant. "Resigned? When?" "A week ago," the receptionist said. "Last Tu

  • Forget About the Marriage   Chapter 5

By the time Shane left the hospital and sent Nora back to the Postnatal Retreat, the sky had already gone completely dark. He drove in silence the whole way. Nora sat in the passenger seat and glanced at him from time to time. She still hadn't changed out of the loose outfit from the Retreat, and her wrists were bruised from what had happened at the bridal home. "Shane, don't blame Yuna. She really didn't mean to push me," Nora said in a gentle voice. "She was just in a bad mood today. When she calms down, I'll go talk to her properly." Shane's grip on the steering wheel tightened as he swallowed hard. "She wasn't like this in the past." His voice carried a weary tone he could not explain. "She used to think of others first no matter what happened. She never started fights with anyone either. How did she become like this..." Nora lowered her head and did not answer. Outside the car window, the streetlights passed them by one after another, Shane's face cast in shifting li
