Chapter 9

Author: Frosty
Hayden expected Sylvie to be overjoyed and readily agree, but she remained silent and motionless.

Joshua's patience wore thin. After he threatened suicide again, she finally made a vow, leaned over slightly, kissed him, and immediately pulled away.

Joshua noticed nothing amiss, smiling as he pulled her into his arms.

Watching the two reconcile, Hayden smiled silently. He turned and left quietly, removing the ring from his finger.

Back home, Hayden booked a flight to Areland for three days later.

The airline called, and he answered, "Yes, the 9 AM flight, first class."

He was interrupted when Sylvie returned, looking at him with surprise. "What about first class?"

Hayden hung up, his tone flat.

"A first-class flight."

"Did your mother agree to come back for the wedding? When does she arrive? Should I pick her up?"

Hayden did not clarify her misunderstanding. "No need."

Sylvie did not ask any further questions and took off her coat.

Looking around, she noticed many things seemed missing and frowned. "Have you had someone clean up the house recently?"

Hayden nodded casually. "Yeah. We're about to start a new life, so of course I had to get rid of some useless things."

Sylvie assumed he was referring to married life and did not think much of it. She got up to go to the bathroom.

For the next two days, she was busy and not home.

Hayden did not ask about it.

The day before the wedding, he received his permanent residency permit, went to the cemetery, and brought Amelia's favorite sunflowers.

"Amelia, the last thing you did before you passed away was leave me a will, telling me to let go of you and start a new life. But seven years have passed, and I still can't move on.

“Are you angry with me? You can be angry. I've always been good at making you angry, anyway. I've only ever loved you."

He poured out his heart, standing before the gravestone for a long, long time.

Only when the sun began to set did Sylvie call, asking where he was.

He gave her the cemetery address, and Sylvie offered to pick him up.

Hayden did not refuse.

Once in the car, Sylvie asked him out of concern, which was out of character for her, "We're getting married tomorrow. Did you go to the cemetery today to tell your late relatives or friends the good news? Your grandfather or grandmother?"

Hayden shook his head, changing the subject. "I'm just paying respects to the deceased. And what brings you here all of a sudden?"

Sylvie's hands on the steering wheel paused as she hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I just came to pick you up. By the way, I'm going home tonight. That’s my hometown’s bridal custom. I'll come pick you up tomorrow morning."

Hayden knew that everything she was saying was a prelude to her running away from the wedding.

He did not expose her.

When they arrived home, Sylvie saw him to the door and called out to him before he went inside, "Tomorrow..."

She trailed off, pausing as if remembering something. "See you tomorrow."

Hayden did not respond. He just waved and turned to go inside.

That evening, he turned on his camera and recorded a video, beaming at the camera.

"Dear guests, I'm sorry I couldn't be there in person and can only inform you about this via video. Since the bride ran away, I've run away too."

After a night's rest, the makeup artist and photographer arrived at 3 AM.

"I want to rest a little longer. You can go straight to the wedding venue. I won't get ready first."

Hayden made an excuse to send them away and slept until 6 AM, when Sylvie called.

"Something happened at the wedding venue. I need to go deal with it. Can you head to the hotel by yourself?"

"Sure," Hayden readily agreed.

After hanging up, he got up leisurely, washed up, ate breakfast, and changed clothes.

At 7 AM, the wedding convoy arrived on time.

He did not get in the car. Instead, he handed the wedding rings and the video camera to the driver, instructing him, "When you get to the wedding venue, give this video to the emcee and have him replace the pre-wedding music video that was originally supposed to be played."

Then, watching the long convoy depart, he picked up his suitcase, hailed a taxi, and rushed to the airport. After deleting all of Sylvie's contact information, the boarding announcement came.

He took one last glance at the city, smiled, and said, "Goodbye."

Goodbye, Jamesville.

Goodbye, Sylvie.

In the hospital corridor, the glaring red operating-theater light glowed. Sally slapped Sylvie across the face, her voice trembling. "You monster! That's Joshua! Joshua, who grew up with you! How could you say such things to provoke him?"Sylvie did not dodge. Blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. Her eyes were vacant, mumbling to herself, "I didn't mean for him to die...""What's the use of saying that now?" Flora suddenly lunged at her and began to beat her, her sharp nails leaving scratches all over her. "If anything happens to my son, I'll make you pay for it!"The operation light went out.The doctor pushed the door open and stepped out, his face grave as he sighed slightly. "Sorry. We did our best. Our condolences. "The corridor fell silent at those words. Then, Flora began wailing.Sally staggered back a step, while Sylvie suddenly burst into laughter. The laughter grew louder and finally turned into a hysterical fit of laughter. "Karma! This is all karma... We we

Online public opinion was originally overwhelmingly critical of Hayden, but it reversed overnight. The evidence Liam released was like a grenade, shattering Joshua's carefully crafted image of a victim.Chat records, surveillance videos, and even hospital diagnosis certificates showed that Joshua's so-called suicides were carefully designed. The most damning voice recording was of Joshua smugly boasting to his friends on the eve of Sylvie and Hayden's wedding."That fool Sylvie! All I have to do is pretend I'm going to jump off a building, and she'll do whatever I say. I even managed to stop her from going to the wedding to Hayden for me. So what if he's her official boyfriend? He still can't compare to me."The insults suddenly turned on Joshua, with everyone piling on him at once.Sylvie was just stepping out of the airport when she received the news.A call from her assistant interrupted her as she was heading to collect her luggage. "Ms. Scott, this is terrible! Mr. Gillman

"You didn't have any evidence either, but you still firmly believed that I bullied Joshua, didn't you?"Hayden’s emotionless words left Sylvie frozen in place. The man in her memory, who always smiled gently at her, now wore an unfamiliar, distant look.Hayden supported Jasmine, lowering his gaze at the trembling Sylvie. "Why are you always so self-righteous? You protected Joshua without any reason before, and you accused me of being vicious when I did nothing. “You simply brushed aside the harm you caused me and said he was still young. I think I made myself clear enough yesterday. Sylvie, who is it that keeps pestering me and making a fuss non-stop?"Sylvie's eyes were red as she opened her mouth to say something, but Hayden was not looking at her. He supported Jasmine back to the mansion and closed the door with a thud.Once they were away from the view of outsiders, Hayden indifferently pushed Jasmine away from him. "Jasmine, who asked you to do all that?” His voice grew c

The moon hung high in the sky. Sylvie followed Hayden and Jasmine, eventually parking her car at the entrance of the Simpson villa. She watched Jasmine help Hayden enter the mansion and not come out for a long time. Seeing the mansion brightly lit inside, she did not dare go up and ring the doorbell. The curtains in the master bedroom upstairs were drawn, and she could vaguely see two figures moving inside. Soon, the lights went out, and the mansion fell into a silent darkness.Sylvie's hand, hanging at her side, tightened, her sharp nails piercing her palm. She did not even feel the pain. She pondered, 'Who is that woman? She has nothing in common with Amelia. Why did Hayden allow her to stay by his side?'Sylvie thought she most resembled Amelia. As long as she could stay by Hayden's side and as long as he could change his mind, she would do anything he asked. Her thoughts were in a complete mess. Her eyes were red, but she dared not approach the mansion. She seemed to have l

"Joshua kept threatening suicide. If I didn't pretend to agree with him, it would have been a life lost... Besides, my family members have always... “Anyway, Hayden, come back with me. This time, I'll ignore them. You're the one I love. I have to be with you. They’ll understand eventually!"The cool night breeze carried Sylvie's words straight to Hayden, sobering him up almost instantly. He looked at the panicked Sylvie in front of him and smiled sarcastically. "Sylvie, you knew all along, didn’t you?"His voice was light, but his words cut like a knife. "Joshua faked those suicide threats."Sylvie's pupils contracted suddenly, and her lips trembled. "I... No, he... He really...""That came later." Hayden interrupted her, his gaze clear and cold. "You kept enabling him again and again, and that is what made him more and more twisted."He straightened his windblown clothes, his voice frighteningly calm. "Just like how you knew I was using you as a substitute, yet you still chose

Business receptions abroad were much the same as back home, filled with people in elegant outfits, clinking glasses, and flowing drinks.Hayden held a bottle of champagne and stood in the corner, watching the unfamiliar faces. No one here knew his past. They only knew that he was the sole heir of Simpson Group. Everyone's gaze toward him contained only respect. No one looked at him with pity or nosiness."Mr. Simpson." Jasmine appeared beside him at some point, holding a cup of water. "Don't drink so much liquor."Her fingertips felt cold as they removed the glass from his hand."Why don't you mingle with the others?""My job is to follow you." She replied as if it were the most natural thing. "Of course, I will follow you wherever you go."Hayden's eyes crinkled slightly. "No need. You can leave work early today."Jasmine looked straight at him and suddenly asked, "Can I ask you a question?""Go ahead.""Do you regret coming to Areland?"Hayden froze. For a moment, he did n
