Chapter 3

Author: The Awakened
Suspicion once again turned toward the Reynolds family as people whispered among themselves.

"I can't believe Greyson would say something like that to his own little sister. He's absolutely heartless."

"If Vance is telling the truth, then we can't trust what the Reynolds family just said. They could've been lying about her."

The Reynolds family had always thought themselves superior. Faced with the crowd's judgmental stares, they finally snapped.

Tears welled in Melanie's eyes. "What are you talking about? My son would never do something like that."

Grant's voice trembled with barely contained fury. "What do any of you know? Do you have any idea what that ungrateful daughter of ours did?!"

He turned to Greyson. "Enough, Greyson. Stop covering for her. Tell everyone what she did!"

Greyson drew a deep breath. His gaze swept across the room, his expression full of wounded pride. As if he could no longer tolerate the accusations, he finally exposed the family scandal they'd kept hidden.

"Before Maren left home, she started a fire in our house!"

The audience went silent.

"She was angry because we tried to discipline her. That day, while my mom was taking a nap, she started a fire in the living room downstairs and fled!"

Greyson's voice shook with anger. "Because of her reckless behavior, my mom almost died in that fire. Serena was the one who saved her."

He paused, his voice softening slightly. "Serena risked her own life to get Mom out of the fire. If she hadn't witnessed what happened, we wouldn't even know the truth.

"And Maren, that ungrateful brat, never once came back to apologize!"

Melanie choked back a sob. "If it hadn't been for my precious Serena that day, I... I would've died in that fire.

"I carried Maren to full term, and she tried to kill me. I'm glad she ran away. I don't ever want to see her again."

Grant spoke last, "We never acknowledged her publicly because we were too ashamed of her."

I hovered above them as bitterness slowly filled every part of me.

I hadn't started that fire. When thick smoke began billowing up from downstairs, I covered my nose and mouth and tried to get out of the house.

Then I saw Melanie lying unconscious in her bedroom. There was no time to think.

Gritting my teeth, I dragged and pulled her away from the flames and toward the front door.

A burning piece of wood crashed down on me. The pain was so intense that my vision went black, but I forced myself to keep going until I'd dragged her to safety by the entrance.

I couldn't find a single servant in the house that day.

Covered in blood, I ran outside and stumbled toward the road to find help.

A passing car stopped. The window rolled down, revealing Vance's face…

When I woke up again, I was in the basement of his house.

Vance told me he'd been watching me for a long time. He said I was going to be his final masterpiece.

"You're their biological daughter, but none of them love you. That's really sad." Vance looked at me with pity. "So I've decided to do a good deed and send you to heaven."

I begged him to let me go.

He gave me three chances. I could call my family three times. If even one of them agreed to save me, he would let me go.

However, neither Melanie nor Grant answered. With my last chance, I called Greyson, my hands trembling.

This time, someone picked up. I curled up in the corner, my entire body covered in injuries.

The moment I heard that familiar voice, tears spilled down my cheeks.

"Greyson, please save me."

He was silent for two seconds. Then his voice filled with anger and disappointment. "You actually have the nerve to call me? I haven't even dealt with you for setting that fire because you were throwing a tantrum!

"Do you have any idea how close Mom came to dying? And now you're making up another lie? Do you think we're all idiots?"

I froze, completely bewildered. "I didn't..."

He cut me off impatiently, "Enough. Either get your ass home right now and beg Mom for forgiveness, or die out there. Don't ever come back!"

The call abruptly ended.

I sat there clutching the phone as the screen went dark, reflecting my tear-streaked face.

Vance leaned against the opposite wall, his head tilted as he watched me. "That's rough."

He walked over and crouched in front of me, reaching out to wipe the tears from my face. "Poor Maren. You're out of chances. This place was already hell for you anyway. You might as well let me take you away."

I closed my eyes in despair.

This time, I stopped fighting back...

Back in the studio, someone spoke hesitantly, "But is it possible Maren ran away because she knew she'd done something wrong, and then she really was murdered? Maybe that's why she never came back."

Everyone froze.

Grant and Melanie went pale, uncertainty creeping into their eyes.

But Greyson suddenly gave a cold laugh. "Stop making ridiculous guesses. I have proof that Maren is definitely not dead."

By the time Melanie rushed toward me, my feet had already turned completely transparent. She dropped to her knees in front of me, grasping desperately at empty air as she sobbed."Maren, don't go. I know I was wrong. I'll spend every day with you from now on. I'll never choose anyone over you again, okay? Come back. Please come back and let me see you......"Grant stood behind her, his lips trembling for a long moment before he managed to speak, "I was wrong. I should've believed you. I should never have refused to acknowledge you as my daughter. I'll apologize to you in front of everyone."Greyson desperately reached toward me, his face drenched in tears. "I'm sorry. If only I'd listened to you when you called that day."Please forgive us. Whatever you want, I'll give it to you. You can have all the family's shares. You can have the company, too."And Serena... we found out the truth. She was behind everything. She deliberately made us misunderstand you all along. We've completel

Serena froze. She stared at Grant in disbelief. "Dad, what did you say?""I said get on your knees!" Grant kicked her hard in the leg.Serena cried out in pain and fell to the floor.A flicker of hatred crossed her face, gone almost as quickly as it appeared. By the time she looked up again, she was the picture of hurt and confusion. "Dad, what's going on? What did I do?"Greyson's grim voice cut through the room. "Maren is dead."The corners of Serena's mouth almost lifted into a smile. She quickly lowered her head and dug her nails deep into her palm. When she looked up again, her face was filled with shock and sorrow. "How... how could that happen? Maren..."Her voice caught. "I know she did something terrible back then and almost got Mom killed, but I never wanted her to die."She wiped away tears that weren't there. "What happened to her?"Watching her performance, Greyson suddenly wondered how he'd managed to be so blind all these years. "Stop acting, Serena. We know eve

Even though none of the Reynoldses said a word, Vance continued anyway, "The person who started the fire was that adopted daughter you all adore."Greyson wanted to call him a liar, but the accusation died on his lips.Vance began talking as casually as if they were having an ordinary conversation, "I've actually been watching your family for a long time."His voice remained unhurried. "For six whole months, I followed Maren every day. I watched her get bullied. I watched you blame her over and over again. It was never her fault, but somehow, she was always the one who got punished."Serena treated her horribly behind your back. And honestly, she wasn't even good at covering it up. All you had to do was look into what happened, and you would've figured it out. But not once did any of you bother."Melanie shuddered."I kept wondering why you loved a daughter who wasn't related to you more than your own biological child," Vance continued. "So when I saw your adopted daughter start

All three members of the Reynolds family looked up at him.Greyson's voice was hoarse. "What do you mean?"Vance smiled.Ignoring Greyson, he stared directly at Melanie. "When Maren ran into me, she was covered in blood, begging me to go back and save you."Unfortunately, I'm not that kindhearted. I knocked her out and dragged her away instead. Sorry, Mrs. Reynolds. I nearly got you killed."Melanie looked as though she'd been struck by lightning. "What did you say?"At last, the Reynolds family learned the truth.I had been the one who risked my life to drag Melanie out of her room, saving her life from the fire. And even after I was injured, I forced myself to go find someone to help her.Vance continued dramatically, "You should've seen Maren. She was in terrible shape. She had burns all over her body, and her left arm was crushed and drenched in blood."I politely asked if she wanted me to take her to the hospital, and you know what she said? She told me she was fine and a

Greyson's mind went completely blank. He stared at the detective in front of him, watching the man's lips move without hearing a single word. What did he mean... Maren had been murdered?Someone as tough as her was supposed to survive anything. She'd spent eighteen years growing up without her real family and had been perfectly fine, hadn't she?Greyson suddenly remembered the first time he'd met Maren. She'd been selling handmade jewelry at a street market. She'd looked up at him with a smile."Hey, want to buy a bracelet? Ten bucks each. I made them myself. Your girlfriend would love one."The first thing he'd noticed had been her bright, sparkling eyes. There had been something resilient about her, like a wildflower that could thrive anywhere. If this girl really was his sister, he'd thought, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to accept her.So why had everything changed afterward? Why had he grown more and more impatient with her? She'd only been back with them for a year. The R

Others gasped in horror.Melanie's face turned deathly pale. Her entire body went limp, and Grant caught her, though his own hands were shaking violently.Greyson stood frozen. His lips parted soundlessly, and his eyes were wide open. Only minutes ago, he'd looked so smug, so certain of himself. Now all that confidence had vanished, leaving only confusion on his face.He murmured, "What? Maren's body is at our house?"Vance's smile grew even wider. He leaned back in his chair. "That's right. I buried her beneath the old tree in front of your house."He sounded almost regretful. "I would've preferred to keep her in my basement with the others, but she seemed like she really wanted to go home. So I took her home."More and more viewers flooded into the livestream."Oh, my God. Her body is actually at the Reynolds house? Th
