Iris's P.O.V.

Rushed steps coming down the hall take mother's hands off of me and the sneer from her face as she steps away and promptly slips her mask back into place just as the door swung open, revealing a panting Lucian who immediately froze at the sight of us.

"Well then dear," mother says sweetly, "I'll see you tomorrow morning, no later than nine please."

Iris's P.O.V.Rushed steps coming down the hall take mother's hands off of me and the sneer from her face as she steps away and promptly slips her mask back into place just as the door swung open, revealing a panting Lucian who immediately froze at the sight of us."Well then dear," mother says sweetly, "I'll see you tomorrow morning, no later than nine please."Mother looks to Lucian as if only just noticing him, I couldn't bring my eyes to look at him, couldn't bring myself to do anything as my body heaved all over, mother's touch still lingering on me even as she stepped towards the door."Lucian, I'm sorry if we woke you," mother says politely, her words sounding mournful, "Iris and I were catching up after all these months and I'm afraid she got a little overzealous with the details."Moving swiftly to the door, mother offers Lucian a quiet good night before she leaves the way she came. Lucian doesn't waste a moment before he comes to me, resting his hands on my shoulders as he b

Iris's P.O.V.Before I or Zander could utter another word, the sound of the front door opening makes us both look towards the doorway. Zander slips past me, his tub of ice-cream tucked under his arm as he slips away before mother could catch sight of him.I immediately make my way towards the front of the house, the further away I kept her from Lucian's ears for now, the better. It didn't take long to find her seeing as she almost walked straight into me; I stepped back before we could meet and she released the smallest sound of fright before fixing herself.Dressed in a black sleeping set, she wrapped the robe around her just a little tighter before smiling widely, "Iris," she greets while purposefully keeping her tone low, "you're awake, that's good. I was worried I'd have to check all the rooms looking for you.""It's almost three in the morning, why are you here, mother?" I ask pointedly, I was in no mood to beat around the bush and the question wasn't entirely rude when she let h

Iris's P.O.V.Splashing my face with cold water, I let myself sink into the chills that run through me, taking in deep breaths while I fight back the too-close memories. It was never better to keep my eyes closed, that just let memories seem more real when I could see them so clearly behind my eyelids. But the only alternative would bring me face to face with my reality, the one where everything I saw was a blurred representation of its true self, and having to see my morphed reflection now would be much worse than reliving the past.Sighing deeply, I switch the tap off and keep my cold hands over my face, trying to get them to stop shaking so badly. It'd been so much easier when we'd been in the pack, when I was with Lucian and knew that there was nothing close to me for miles that wished me harm. But here, there was, all around us in this gross place that held the origins of all the worst parts of my life; I felt anything other than safe.Pushing off the edge of the counter, I make

Iris's P.O.V.********************A knock on the door takes my eyes away from my designated mathematics notebook. I cap my pen with an inward sigh. I'd only just started on making my notes from today's classes and was in no mood to deal with mother."Come in," I call while shifting my body to face the door.West, one of the household servants, steps inside with a brief smile that I return readily even while my eyes focus on his slightly crumpled shirt; mother would have his head if she saw his uniform in such a state."You have a visitor, Miss Evans," West states as he steps aside to let them in.When Bryce Haynes walks in, with his graceful stride and wide grin, I sort of freeze in my chair, absolutely shellshocked and oblivious as to why he was here. I flick my gaze up and down his frame in a quick assessment; yes, he still had his perfectly styled dark brown hair and acute features that made him look even more handsome. The only thing different about him was that he wore a uniform

Iris's P.O.V.Lucian doesn't say a word and I'm so grateful for it, I wasn't sure if I wanted him to say anything now. Not when everything felt so raw, when unsaid truths and hidden desires were so close to the surface that I felt like I'd given him everything in me, but I knew that I'd barely scratched at any of it."I used to let myself believe it sometimes," I whisper so quietly I wished no one would hear it, "when it got really bad, the worst times... I let myself believe that it was real."Lucian holds me, sways us slowly while he rubs his hand up and down my back, stroking my skin soothingly while he rested his chin on my head. He just held me and loved me, and it almost broke me.It was all I ever wanted.Lucian doesn't push when I don't say any more, doesn't ask for more or press with questions, he just holds me, keeping me so close that I knew he'd never let me go. With gentle kisses to my head and loving caresses, he adorns me with his affection until I manage to settle myse

Iris's P.O.V.Lucian was scared.I could tell that I was worrying him, that this situation that he didn't understand was scaring him, which in turn made me scared, though for different reasons.I was scared because I knew I had to tell Lucian more, tell him about my life, about why Mother hated me and why I hated her. But most of all I was terrified because I knew that I'd also have to tell him about the night I lost my vision and how it'd happened.I'd been with Lucian for almost a year now and he'd never pushed me to tell him, never bombarded me with the questions which I knew rested on his mind, he'd always waited for me. It was one of the many reasons why I loved him endlessly, but there came a point where I had to force myself to take that step for him, because I knew if I didn't I'd let myself live in peace like this forever, and that could never be fair to Lucian.Lucian deserved to know.I'd held it all back for months. Keeping the events of that night and my life tightly lock
