Chapter 2 What Was Owed

Author: Keyboard Overkill
I tossed the photograph into the trash and looked around the room that had once been mine but had now become Dominic's walk-in closet.

My bed and desk were gone.

His vacation photos covered the walls. One of them had been taken at Claremont Bay on New Year's Eve this year. My biological parents had watched the fireworks with him.

He was wearing the black overcoat I'd saved up to buy. It had originally been kept in this room.

I'd searched everywhere for it.

Sylvia insisted I'd remembered wrong and told me not to blame everything on Dominic.

Now, in the photograph, the letter "M" I'd sewn by hand inside the collar was perfectly clear.

Dominic followed me inside. "Lachlan, I can give it back if you like it that much. I've already worn it, though. You won't mind, will you?"

"I don't want it."

He pursed his lips. "Are you still blaming me? Being switched at birth wasn't my fault. I never asked them to favor me."

Every time he said that, all four of our parents would feel sorry for him. As if being the one everyone favored somehow made him the victim.

I crouched down and rummaged through the trash bag. My diploma, family records, and the wooden box my grandmother had left me were all still there.

The only thing missing was my bankbook. It held the $110,000 I'd earned and saved from working part-time since I was sixteen.

Two months ago, Corbin had said he'd keep it for me.

"Where's my bankbook?"

Something flickered in Dominic's eyes.

Sylvia stood in the doorway. "We've used the money for now. Dominic's insurance had to be paid in full, and it happened to be exactly $110,000 short."

I stared at her. "You wouldn't spend your money to pay for my treatment, but you took mine to secure Dominic's future?"

Sylvia's expression darkened. "What do you mean, your money? We gave you a roof and fed you for eighteen years. Didn't any of that cost money? Besides, what good would $110,000 do for a condition like yours?"

Elise came over too. "Lachlan, don't get hung up on this. Dominic's insurance policy has beneficiaries. If anything happens to him in the future, the money will stay within the family."

I realized what was going on.

The money I'd saved to keep myself alive had been used to buy Dominic an insurance policy.

If Dominic lived, he got the money. If Dominic died, they got it. Either way, there was never anything left for me.

I turned on my phone's voice recorder.

"The $110,000 in that bankbook is money I earned myself. My lawyer will be contacting you tomorrow."

Corbin kicked the trash bag aside. "You're going to sue us? We raised you for eighteen years, and this is what we get? An ungrateful son? Let's settle it once and for all, then."

I looked up at him. "I'll pay back every cent I owe you. And you'll return every cent you took from me."

Dominic's eyes reddened as he grabbed Corbin's arm. "Don't be angry Dad. Lachlan is sick, and he's having a hard time right now. I'll give him the $110,000 out of my allowance."

It sounded generous, but he didn't even ask for my bank details.

Lillian walked in carrying a cake. "Dominic, why do you even bother? He won't be around for much longer, and now he wants to drag both families down with him."

When she was twelve, she'd broken her leg, and I'd carried her two blocks to the hospital.

After her surgery, she clung to me and cried, "Don't go, Lachlan. I'm scared."

Now, she couldn't wait for me to die.

I picked up my grandmother's wooden box. "Move."

Lillian blocked the doorway.

"There's another agreement tomorrow. Sign it, and we'll forget about the bankbook." Corbin spoke as though he were completely justified. "That way, when you die, we won't have all sorts of random people coming after us for your debts."

"Fine." I held the wooden box tighter. "Then, I'll see you at the notary's office tomorrow."

Dominic chased me out into the hall and pressed a bank card into my hand. "There's a thousand dollars on it. Buy yourself something good to eat."

He was wearing a brand-new watch. The receipt was sitting right there on the table. It cost $188,000.

I slipped the card back into his pocket. "Keep it. You'll have plenty of medical expenses to worry about later."

His face went pale. "What do you mean?"

The elevator doors slowly closed.

I looked at him. "I hope you live a long life."

Inside the apartment, Corbin shouted, "Bring your medical records tomorrow! The agreement needs to make it clear that your illness has nothing to do with either of our families!"

After the slap, Dominic collapsed onto the floor.Sylvia moved to help him.Elise grabbed her arm. "Don't touch him! He knew his tests were abnormal and still sweet-talked us into buying insurance!"Sylvia yanked her arm free. "So what? Dominic is sick, and all you care about is money?"Elise shot back sharply, "Did you pay for it all by yourself? My family put up $1.3 million! Meanwhile, you stole $110,000 from Lachlan!""Bullshit!" Sylvia lost her temper too. "The insurance bought with that $110,000 still lists your family as beneficiaries!"The four of them erupted into an argument outside the hospital room.Who had paid more. Who was entitled to how much. Who had insisted on paying the premium all at once. Who had secretly named themselves the primary beneficiary. The day before, they had all been talking about saving Dominic. Now, they were already calculating how much they would get after he died.Dominic covered his face, his eyes growing colder by the second. "Enough!"

The comments in Maxwell's livestream were flooding in so rapidly, they were almost impossible to read.Someone recognized the video Rafael had uploaded. Before long, the complete recording, the notarized agreement, and the bank transaction records had all shot to the top of the trending topics."Shocking: Four Parents Pressure Their Son to Give Up Treatment.""Stealing Life-Saving Money to Buy Insurance for Their Adopted Son.""Bone Marrow Donation Must Be Voluntary."Rafael's phone wouldn't stop ringing. He answered one call, and his expression changed instantly. "Sir, I can explain. Everything online has been taken out of context."I couldn't hear what the person on the other end said.Slowly, Rafael's shoulders began to sag. "Suspension? No, please, just let me explain…"The call ended.Corbin got some bad news, too. Someone had dug up evidence that his building-supply store had been evading taxes and using substandard materials. Regulators had already shown up at the

Sylvia immediately stepped in front of Dominic. "I took the money. Dominic had nothing to do with it."The officer glanced at her. "We'll find out who took it after we investigate. Don't rush to take the blame."Dominic clutched his chest and staggered. All four parents instantly crowded around him."Dominic!""Are you feeling sick again?""Officer, he has leukemia. He can't handle this kind of stress."The officer remained calm. "If he needs treatment, we can take him to the hospital first. But the investigation still needs to be done."Rafael turned around and glared at me. "We're family. Did you really have to take this to the police?"Maxwell laughed outright."You didn't talk about being family when you took the money. But now that you've been caught, suddenly you and Lachlan are family? Wow. Your family's sense of loyalty is like an alarm. The police show up, and suddenly it goes off."I handed over the record of my replacement bankbook. The $110,000 had been transferr

The chaos started immediately on the other end of the line.Elise was the first to panic. "What are you talking about? Dominic isn't going to die!"Corbin's voice turned cold. "Lachlan, stop saying things like that. It's bad luck."I laughed. "A minute ago, you were all saying I didn't have much time left. You had no trouble saying it then. So. why can't you stand hearing it when it's about him?"No one answered. Finally, Rafael gritted his teeth. "What do you want? Name your price."The words hit me like a slap across the face. So, it wasn't that they didn't understand that a human life had value. It was that mine didn't.Maxwell snatched the phone away. "If you want to talk about the donation, pay the $110,000 first. Then, compensate him for the losses caused by breaking the lease without my consent. And we'll add up the cost of every single thing you broke today, too."Corbin gave a cold laugh. "Who are you trying to scam?""Weren't you the ones who wanted to name a price?"

There was silence on the other end of the line for a full thirty seconds.Sylvia was the first to speak. "Doctor, are you sure there hasn't been another mistake? Dominic just has anemia. He's always been in poor health. There's no way he has leukemia."The doctor's tone was grave. "We double-checked the results thrice. Dominic's bone marrow biopsy, bloodwork, and genetic information all match. Meanwhile, Lachlan's test results are normal."Elise's voice trembled. "What about a transplant? All four of us have been tested. Someone has to be a match, right?""I'm afraid none of the four family members are compatible." The doctor paused. "The only full match we have right now is Lachlan."The car erupted."What?""How could it be him?""Doctor, are you one hundred percent sure?"All four of them started talking over each other.Just moments ago, they'd been saying Dominic had only stayed up too late. Funny how no one thought the hospital was bad luck anymore.Maxwell glanced at
