Chapter 3

Author: Cocojam
I almost laughed thinking about my last life.

Grant, grabbing my chin, whispering, "Darling, without an alibi, you're dead in the water."

Now I had the entire LAPD's incident report. High-def interrogation footage. The medical examiner's bloodwork.

The entire Los Angeles justice system was my alibi.

Let's see who they could pin this on now.

The hours ticked by.

At 6 AM, Detective Ramirez from the Homicide Division appeared at my cell door, his face dark. He led me to a private interview room.

"Julia," he said, his voice grave. "There was a fatal hit-and-run on Sunset Boulevard last night. A valet, a college student, was killed on impact. The vehicle we've identified at the scene is a white Porsche 911. Registered in your name."

I widened my eyes, playing shocked and confused. "What? That's impossible! My car has been in my building's garage. The keys are in my purse!"

My mom and Liam, who had been waiting anxiously in the lobby, heard this and rushed over.

"Detective, that's an absurd accusation! My daughter has been in custody here all night!" My mom protested.

Suddenly, the station's glass doors were shoved open.

My fiancé Grant and his sister Blair stormed in. A guy trailing right behind them suddenly pulled a concealed camera from his jacket—a TMZ stringer.

"Julia! You got high, killed someone in a hit-and-run, and you have the nerve to hide? Do you have any conscience at all?" Grant screamed, projecting his voice for the camera.

I gave them a cold look. "I was arrested yesterday for vandalism…"

Blair cut me off with a shriek.

"Oh my god! You weren't just drunk, you were high, weren't you? No wonder you ran! Hiding out in a police station, pretending to be crazy!"

My mom went pale. "That's a lie! My daughter would never do something like that!"

"Why not? It's all over the news! Figures your family would raise a murderer who thinks she's above the law!" Blair sneered.

The TMZ reporter, like a shark smelling blood, shoved his way toward the glass partition.

"Julia! How does it feel to buy your way out of vehicular manslaughter?!"

The flash of his camera went off once, blindingly bright, before two officers immediately tackled him back against the wall.

My mom was shaking with rage. Liam pointed a finger at the struggling reporter. "Confiscate that! My legal team will hit TMZ with a multi-million dollar defamation suit that will have you paying for the rest of your life!"

"Back off! This is a police station, not a movie set! Get his gear!" Detective Ramirez barked, and the officers quickly dragged the reporter out of the lobby.

I stared hard at Grant. "I was arrested at 6:30 PM yesterday! The garage security cameras can prove my car was still there!"

A flicker of panic crossed Grant's eyes.

But he recovered quickly, like a true Oscar winner, his face shifting to a look of profound disappointment.

The black sedan pulled up to the massive iron gates of the Grant estate. Blair reached for the door handle. The radio crackled. The undercover officer hit a button.Click.All four car doors locked simultaneously.“What are you doing?!” Blair shrieked, pounding on the window. “We’re home! Open the gates!”“We're executing a search warrant for the hostage,” the officer said coldly, her face a blank mask. “Where is she?”“You'll never find her!” Blair screeched, cornered and terrified. “She’s locked in our family’s underground wine cellar, the steel door is coded! You can't get in!”The words were out before she could stop them. Her own eyes widened in horror as she realized what she had just confessed.I stared at the screen, my heart hammering. A sharp pain went through my chest.A wine cellar. No sun. No sound. Just cold, damp stone walls. My mother, an old woman with a heart condition, had been trapped in a place like that all day.I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms.

“A heart attack would be better.”On the other end of the line, Grant’s mother’s voice was light, casual, like she was talking about the weather.“It would save her a lot of suffering.”My nails dug into my palms so hard I thought they would draw blood.“Are you insane?!” I screamed. “She’s an old woman!”Liam quickly grabbed a notepad, scribbled two words on it, and pushed it in front of me.ASK DEMANDS.I stared at the paper, forcing down the rage, and made myself speak.“What do you want? Tell me.”A satisfied chuckle came from the phone.“It’s simple,” she said, her voice dripping with triumph. “Go to the DA. Retract your evidence. Then go to court and confess that you drugged Blair and forced her to drive.”A cold chill ran down my spine.“Whether I’m insane or not doesn’t matter,” she cut me off. “What matters is that judges tend to go easy on old ladies with heart conditions. All you have to do is get Blair home safe by 8 PM tonight, and we’ll let your mother go.”“And if I don’

The sound of Blair slamming the door echoed down the hall.I immediately went inside, opened my laptop, and downloaded three copies of the surveillance footage. One for my hard drive, one for the cloud, and one I sent directly to Liam.Later that afternoon at 4:30 PM, Liam and I were back at the LAPD station.Detective Ramirez’s brow furrowed as he took the USB drive.“This recording,” he said, looking at me, “is enough to charge her with intimidating a witness.”“I know,” I nodded. As we walked out of the station, a furious scream hit us.“You!” Grant’s mother saw me and charged, her face contorted with rage. “It’s all your fault, you bitch!”I flinched back, but her hand was already flying toward my face.Liam stepped in front of me, taking the full force of the slap on his neck.Grant’s father lunged at us, swinging wildly. “They stopped my daughter at LAX! She’s facing life in prison!” he roared. “This is all because of you!”Liam grunted in pain but didn’t move, his arms wrapped t

Blair lunged forward and grabbed my arm, her nails digging into my skin.“Julia, please!” Her tears came on command. “My parents are freaking out. They know the truth! They said they’re going to cut me off!”I shook her hand off and took a step back.“And what does that have to do with me?”“You have your trust fund!” she said, wiping away fake tears. “Just pay off the victim’s family. A wrongful death settlement. Then go to the cops and change your story! Say you lent the car to someone else before it happened! That way, my brother and I don’t go to jail, and everyone is happy!”I looked at her and laughed. “And why would I do that?”The moment I said it, Blair’s fragile act shattered. She stood up straight, her chin high, that familiar, arrogant look in her eyes.“Why?” she sneered. “Because my brother lowered himself to date a new-money nobody like you! Do you know how tacky your money is in our circle? You only got into the inner circle because of my brother! It's time for you to r

Detective Ramirez’s expression hardened.“Separate them. Take all three to interrogation rooms,” he ordered, his voice sharp. Two officers moved in. One cuffed Grant, while another started dragging a limp Blair away.Blair completely fell apart, clawing at Grant’s suit jacket, screaming.“Grant! You can’t just leave me here! You said this would work! You said no one would check the date on an old bottle!”Her voice was shrill, desperate to pin all the blame on him.I watched, a cold smile on my lips.Of course. When things get real, the people closest to you are always the first to sell you out.Grant violently shook her off, a flicker of true cruelty in his eyes I’d never seen before.“Shut up,” he hissed. Then he looked up at Detective Ramirez, his voice suddenly calm.“Detective, fabricating the evidence was all me. I broke into her apartment and took the bottle. I paid the reporter. My sister had nothing to do with it.”The hall went silent.Blair froze for a second, then lit up li

Detective Ramirez’s hand was still on his gun, his eyes sharp as a knife on Grant.“Answer the question, sir,” the detective’s voice was low and dangerous. “You’re suspected of fabricating evidence. Start talking.”Grant’s throat worked, but no words came out. His lips trembled.Blair was sheet-white. She stumbled backward into the reporter, and both of them looked like they'd seen a ghost. My mom squeezed my hand so tight her nails dug into my palm. Her eyes were red, but her voice was strong. “How dare you frame my daughter! You're going to rot in hell for this!”Grant finally found his voice, forcing a sick-looking smile.“Detective, I… I just saw the Porsche’s license plate on the news. I was so worried about Julia, I rushed right over!”I almost laughed out loud.“Worried?” I stared at him, my voice dripping with scorn. “Grant, if you were worried, you would have called me. You wouldn’t have brought a TMZ reporter to a police station to call me a murderer.”Every eye in the room s
