Chapter 3

Author: Fiora
Three p.m.

According to the tracker, Riccardo hadn't gone to meet Dante after he left the estate.

His car had headed straight south and pulled into a private golf club on the coast.

The club was in Sophia's name.

I sent someone to pull the club's security footage. Then I sat down in front of the monitors in the war room and opened the dark-web monitoring dashboard.

Ten minutes earlier, the thirty-million-dollar listing had been updated with a new attachment.

The attachment detailed a brand-new backup escape route through a rail maintenance tunnel.

The price had gone up to 50 million.

And at the same time, an offshore shell account in Sophia's name had received a 20-million-dollar down payment.

The money came from our sworn enemies, the Guerra family.

A cold laugh escaped me.

Just then, there was another knock at the door.

It was Dante.

"Consigliere, Riccardo sent me to pick up the final escape plan."

Dante stood in front of the desk, looking serious.

I looked at the scar on his face.

In my last life, when his body was brought back to the estate, his chest had been riddled with bullet holes. His eyes were still wide open, as if he couldn't accept what had happened.

"Riccardo didn't give you the plan?" I asked coldly.

Dante looked confused for a second, then shook his head.

"No. Riccardo said he burned it by accident, and he told me to come get another copy straight from you."

It took me only seconds to understand what Riccardo was doing.

He'd destroyed the plan himself, then sent the man leading the hit to me for another copy.

That way, if the op went wrong, Dante's last words or the mission logs would point straight back to me.

I opened a drawer, took out an encrypted flash drive, and handed it to Dante.

"The op starts at nine tonight. The drive can't be decrypted until 8:55 pm."

"Remember, no matter what orders Riccardo gives over the radio, stick to the red route on the drive when you pull out."

Dante's face hardened. He took the drive and slipped it into an inside pocket.

"Consigliere, what's going on?"

I kept my voice completely level. "Dante, come back alive."

Shock flashed across Dante's face, but he didn't ask another question.

He gave me a firm salute, then turned and left.

Seven p.m. Two hours before the hit.

The great hall was brightly lit.

Riccardo came down the stairs in a crisp suit tailored for combat, but his face was deathly pale.

He clutched his lower-right abdomen as he staggered.

Sophia gasped and caught him as he stumbled. "Riccardo! What's wrong? You look awful!"

Cold sweat beaded on Riccardo's forehead. He looked like he could barely stand.

My father came out of his study with a deep frown.

Dr. Luca Conti, the family doctor, hurried over to examine him and pressed on his lower-right abdomen.

Riccardo let out a muffled groan and doubled over in pain.

"Don, it's acute appendicitis." Luca mopped his brow as he spoke. "He needs to get to a hospital for surgery right away. If it ruptures, it could kill him."

It was the exact same act.

It had played out the same way in my last life. A perfectly timed case of appendicitis had kept him away from the front.

I walked over and looked down at my fiancé, curled up on the rug.

"Acute appendicitis?"

I took a small glass vial out of my pocket. It was half full of a clear liquid.

"This is what you injected yourself with in the golf club bathroom this afternoon, isn't it?"

"A small dose of this can mimic the symptoms of appendicitis within three hours. Riccardo, you really went this far just to get out of tonight's operation."

The hall went dead silent.

My father's pupils contracted sharply as his gaze dropped to Riccardo on the floor.

Sophia's voice rose sharply. "Elowen! Have you lost your mind? Riccardo is in agony, and you're standing there making up lies to smear him!"

"You're hoping he dies so you can seize command for yourself!"

Riccardo lifted his head too, looking hurt and disappointed, as if I'd falsely accused him.

"Elowen... we grew up together..."

"I'm leading tonight. Why would I fake being sick now, of all times..."

The dozen or so senior family members in the hall began looking at me with disapproval.

"Consigliere, Riccardo has always been loyal to the family. How can you suspect him at a time like this?"

"Saving his life comes first. Get him to a hospital!"

My father looked at me calmly.

"Elowen. Proof."

Under the Cavallo code, making an accusation without proof was a grave offense—turning the family against itself.

I slid a tablet over to my father.

On the security footage, Riccardo walked into the club's bathroom and jabbed a needle into his own stomach.

Ten minutes later, he tossed the vial into the trash.

"This isn't medicine. It's a drug that mimics the symptoms of appendicitis. His fingerprints are on the vial."

I turned to Luca.

"You can draw his blood and run a rapid tox screen. It takes ten minutes. We can wait."

Luca looked at my father. When my father nodded, the doctor drew a blood sample and ran the test.

Ten minutes later, his expression darkened as he read the results.

"Don, there's definitely a drug in Riccardo's blood that shouldn't be there."

"It irritates the nerves in the abdomen and causes symptoms almost identical to those of acute appendicitis, but there's no real inflammation."

When I walked into the great hall, the gun smoke and the smell of blood still hung in the air.My father sat in a high-backed chair, his chest wrapped in thick bandages.Dante and about 20 of our men stood lined up along both sides of the hall. The hall had been buzzing with conversation, but the moment I walked in, every voice died.Dante was the first to lower his head in respect. The others followed, pressing a hand to their hearts. "Consigliere!"My father leaned on his cane and got to his feet. His eyes were filled with conflicting emotions."Elowen, is Riccardo taken care of?""He's dead," I answered coldly. My father closed his eyes for a moment and let out a heavy sigh. After a long while, he pulled a signet ring engraved with the family crest from his jacket. It symbolized ultimate authority over the Cavallo family and command of its forces."Elowen, the Guerra family's main force is finished. Not only did we hold our territory in Eastern Europe, now we can take over their ent

Click. The car doors unlocked.I pulled the door open. The wind swept in, carrying away the heavy smell of blood.Riccardo sat in the passenger seat.At the sound of the door opening, he slowly raised his head and leaned back against the window, a faint smile on his face."The Guerra family lost, right?" His voice was perfectly calm."Yes. They're all dead."I raised an eyebrow and braced one hand on the car door, looking down at him."Sophia's locked in the cells. I killed every man the Guerra family brought."Riccardo closed his eyes and exhaled slowly."You really are the same old Elowen."He gave a faint, self-deprecating smile."I've known since I was ten that as long as you're around, nobody can take your place.""Then why did you do it?"I stood there in the wind, staring at him in confusion."Why?"Riccardo turned to face me, his eyes full of ambition and arrogance."Because I'm not some guard dog you people keep on a chain!""Elowen, for 20 years, after every firefight, every

The smell of gun smoke was fading in the hallway.Matteo, clutching his wound, came out from behind cover and steadied my father. My father leaned against the wall, breathing hard. He looked at the wreckage on the floor, then at me."Elowen..." His voice was hoarse, still trembling from the ordeal. "Tonight... what exactly happened here?"I didn't answer. I motioned for the men beside me to restrain Sophia. Then I picked up Sophia's phone, pulled up the group chat she'd failed to delete, and handed it to my father."Father, take a look."My father started scrolling, his expression hard. The screen showed messages documenting Sophia's conspiracy with the Guerra leaders, along with the receipt for the 20-million-dollar down payment. There was also a detailed plan for luring the Cavallo family's main force into a trap and wiping them out. It was all there, laid bare.My father's face grew darker and darker.Sobbing, Sophia rushed toward my father and clung to him desperately."Father! No!

Sophia's pupils contracted. She took in the blood on my trench coat and the smoke curling from the barrel of my gun, and she stumbled back."No... this is impossible! The Guerra family gave me their word! They sent 200 men!""They even blocked your backup escape route. How did you make it back?!""That backup route?"I gave her a mocking smile."You mean the rail maintenance tunnel I filled with 800 gallons of jet fuel?""By now, there's probably nothing left in there but rubble."Sophia staggered, then froze where she stood.Right then, the study door creaked open from the inside.I looked up. It was Vito Moretti, the Guerra family's field commander. The scarred, middle-aged man emerged holding my father hostage. Blood streamed down my father's face.Vito jammed a Desert Eagle against my father's temple and gave me a vicious grin."Consigliere Cavallo, you really do live up to your reputation.""But take one more step, and I'll blow this old man's head off!"My father's face was ashen

The second I walked in, thick gun smoke hung in the great hall. The bodies of two of my father's bodyguards lay on the rug, their chests riddled with bullet holes.Seven or eight gunmen from the Guerra family were pushing up toward the second-floor study with submachine guns, taking turns covering each other. At the top of the spiral staircase, Matteo, my father's longtime butler, was the only one left. He returned fire with a handgun from behind a ballistic barricade, but the sound of his shots was growing fainter.I looked up and saw that Matteo had been shot in the shoulder. Blood had soaked through the entire sleeve of his suit jacket. One of the Guerra gunners raised his rifle with a vicious grin, ready to move in and finish him off.I moved in from the side, submachine gun in hand. But the two Guerra gunmen at the rear sensed something was wrong. They spun around and aimed at the entrance."Who's there?"Their only answer was a burst of gunfire.I kept the submachine gun up and d

On the way, the drug still seemed to be affecting Riccardo.A thin sheen of sweat covered his forehead."Elowen... when did you figure it out? Or did you never trust me in the first place?"I kept my eyes on the road, my hands steady on the wheel. My voice didn't waver. "From the moment you snuck into my study at two in the morning, I had every detail of tonight planned out: every traitor and how each one would die.""You really are ruthless... 20 years together, and you're just going to watch me die?""Spare me the sentiment, Riccardo. You're the one who betrayed the family."He didn't say another word. I yanked the wheel, and the SUV fishtailed onto the main drive leading up to the estate.By the time I got there, the estate's iron gates had been blown into twisted scrap and were hanging off to one side. The once-smooth lawn was pocked with craters. The whole place was chaos.Thick smoke was pouring from my father's study on the top floor of the main house.Empty magazines and discar
