Chapter 4

Author: Little Pop
The cold metal edge of the handcuffs brushed against my wrist.

Beside me, Sophie was wailing at the top of her lungs. "Arrest her! Lock her up!"

Leon kept his head down. His shoulders shook in a performance that perfectly captured a grieving grandson.

The crowd of onlookers grew larger by the second. Everyone stared at me as if I were a convicted murderer.

I could hear people filming on their phones and their venomous whispers.

"How vile, targeting an old lady like that."

"The death penalty is too good for someone like her."

Just as the cuffs were about to click shut around my wrists, I took a deep breath and abruptly stepped back. "Wait."

My voice wasn't loud, but it was clear enough to cut through the noise.

Every single pair of eyes in the corridor snapped to me.

The officer frowned. "Ms. Spencer, please cooperate."

"I am cooperating," I said, looking him dead in the eye.

My voice was steady as I continued, "But before that, I have something I need to show you."

Leon looked up, his gaze locking onto me.

He still wore that mask of devastating grief, but I noticed his fingers twitch and curl inward.

Sophie shrieked, "What's left to see? The evidence is right there! You're the killer!"

I ignored her completely. Instead, I reached into my bag, pulled out my phone, and opened a file.

"Officers, my husband asked me to deliver medicine to Grandma yesterday. But before I went to her house, I took that bottle to a pharmacy and then straight to a hospital."

I handed the phone to the officer.

"This is a chemical analysis report issued yesterday afternoon by the pharmacy department of the downtown general hospital. The bottle that was tested is currently sitting in the evidence locker at your Southia precinct."

The officer took my phone and scanned the screen for a few seconds. His expression completely changed.

Leon's gaze was glued to the phone screen.

The layer of so-called grief on his face began to peel away, piece by piece, like cracking plaster.

Sophie was still yelling in the background, "You obviously forged that in advance just so you could get away with it today!"

Upon hearing this, the officer looked back up at me with a hint of suspicion.

Leon's Adam's apple bobbed heavily, and the corner of his mouth twitched upward in a faint smirk.

Everyone in that hallway thought I was doomed for sure.

And then, I reached into my bag and pulled out the second item.

Leon's pupils dilated instantly, and every last drop of color drained from his face.

Two months later, the court handed down its final verdict.Leon was convicted of intentional homicide and sentenced to life in prison.Sophie, as an accomplice to intentional homicide, was sentenced to 15 years. When the sentences were read, Leon stood in the dock looking hollowed out. He had lost a massive amount of weight. He shot a single glance toward me. It was a look full of hatred and resentment, but beneath it lay an empty bewilderment, like he was asking how he'd ended up like this.I didn't return his gaze.Beside him, Sophie was weeping hysterically. She muttered under her breath, "It's all your fault. You're seriously useless. You couldn't even handle a simple thing like this."Even now, her only grievance was that Leon had failed to execute the plan, not that they shouldn't have done it in the first place.I realized then that this mother-son duo would never feel a shred of remorse. They just thought they were unlucky to have run into someone as "difficult" as me.

The lawyer, Kadence Powell, was in her early 40s. She looked sharp and polished. After listening to my story, she said just one thing. "You have an open-and-shut case."She flipped through the documents I had brought. "Leon is facing charges of intentional homicide and fraud, in addition to committing infidelity and hiding joint assets during the marriage. As the innocent party, you can not only file for divorce but also claim substantial damages.""What about the 40 thousand dollars?""We'll get it back," Kadence said, adjusting her glasses. "Under the law, any unauthorized gifting of joint marital property to a third party without the spouse's consent must be returned in full. That Alison woman will have to cough up every cent of that down payment."I nodded."And then there's Mrs. Hobbs Senior's estate," Kadence continued. "If Leon is convicted of intentionally murdering the person he was set to inherit from, he legally forfeits his right to inherit. By law, Mrs. Hobbs Senior's

Three days later, there was a major breakthrough in the case. The police officer called to ask me to come in for a supplementary statement. When I arrived at the station, Declan Gray, the officer in charge, slid a file across the desk to me. "Leon confessed."As I stared at the paperwork, my fingers turned slightly cold."He admitted he swapped the meds. But he claims…" Declan paused before saying, "it wasn't his idea."I looked up. "What do you mean?""He testified that the entire plan was concocted by his mother."My mind went blank for a moment.Sophie."He said his mother always felt that Mrs. Hobbs Senior's property should have been transferred to them a long time ago, but the old lady refused. Plus, since you two have joint assets, his mother was terrified she wouldn't get a dime in the future. So…""So she told Leon to kill Grandma and frame me." I finished his sentence."Grandma dies, Leon inherits everything, I go to prison, and I won't get any share of the marital p

When I walked out of the interrogation room, the woman was still yelling in the lobby. The moment she spotted me, she stormed over. "Are you Elsie Spencer?"I didn't say anything. She scanned me from head to toe, then curled her lip in disdain. "Leon told me all about you. He said you're paranoid and controlling and that he stopped loving you a long time ago."As I looked at her protruding stomach, a sudden wave of absurdity washed over me."What else did he tell you?""He said as soon as he tied up some loose ends with his family, he'd divorce you and marry me."She raised her chin defiantly. "We're in love."I let out a short laugh. It wasn't a bitter one. I genuinely found it hilarious."Do you even know why he's locked up right now?" I asked. She froze for a moment. "Because you filed a false report against him, obviously.""He poisoned his grandma."The woman's expression froze completely."And he tried to frame me for it," I said, emphasizing every syllable. "He used

At the police station, I sat in the interrogation room, holding a cup of warm water between my hands. From the adjacent room, Leon's voice drifted through the wall. He was still loudly claiming his innocence. "I didn't swap any pills! That footage is fake! She edited it!"The officer pushed the door open and sat across from me. "Ms. Spencer, we've done a preliminary review of the surveillance footage."I looked up at him."The recording clearly shows Leon entering the deceased's house. The timestamp was 4:17 pm yesterday, roughly 40 minutes after you left. He used a key to get in, walked straight to the coffee table, opened the pill bottle, and left after tampering with it for about two minutes."I nodded silently. The officer paused. "But I need to confirm one thing. You said you installed this camera three months ago?""Yes. Grandma lived alone, and I was worried about her.""Did Leon know it was there?""No," I replied. "It's hidden inside a potted plant on top of the TV st

What I pulled out was a USB drive. It was small, black, and had a handwritten label taped to it that read, "Grandma's Living Room—Backup."Leon's lips began to tremble.I handed the drive to the officer. "This is a backup of the surveillance footage from Grandma's living room. I paid out of pocket to install a camera there three months ago because I was worried about her living alone. It saves everything to the cloud and backs up automatically."The officer took the drive and glanced at Leon. The latter's face was now as pale as paper.Sophie was still braying, "So what if you installed a camera? You probably—""Mom," Leon cut her off, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "Stop talking."Sophie blinked, stunned into silence.I continued, "Officers, that footage captures everything. After I left Grandma's house yesterday, someone used a spare key to get inside. They opened the brand-new bottle of pills I left on the coffee table and swapped out every single tablet."I shifted
