Chapter 2

Autor: The Bright Moon
My face turned grim.

"Mom, Dad, every piece of gold jewelry Victoria owns was bought by me," I said. "So, why would I steal a bracelet? You can't just make accusations out of thin air because you've got a problem with me!"

Maybe they remembered how generous I'd always been with Victoria, because for a moment, both of them looked away in guilt.

However, Jonathan refused to let the matter rest. He drove a punch into me that was hard enough to knock me flat on the ground.

"Michael Hoffman, I was trying not to humiliate you during the holidays, but you just had to keep lying through your teeth! If you won't admit it, then don't blame me for what I'm about to do next!"

He pinned me to the ground, shoved a hand into my pants pocket, and pulled out a gold bracelet, which he then held up high for everyone to see.

"Now that the evidence is right here, what do you have to say for yourself? Lowlifes like you truly disgust me!"

I froze because I had no idea how that bracelet had ended up in my pocket.

Under the light, the pattern on it was clear. It was Dian's gold bracelet.

Jonathan looked down at me, his eyes full of malice.

"People with sticky fingers have filthy minds, too. I heard from some girls in high school that you didn't just steal money. You stole underwear, too! How vile can you get?"

He scoffed. "To think they called you a model student back then. Looks like you are just a negative model."

My eyes burned red with rage. It was obvious that Jonathan had stolen the bracelet himself and planted it on me.

I was just about to expose what he'd done when Victoria suddenly hurled a cup of scalding water straight into my face. "Michael, I didn't think you'd stoop so low. I'm very disappointed in you!"

Diana and Caleb stared at me with disdain.

"If people find out our daughter married a lying thief, how are we supposed to face anyone?"

"Victoria, you need to divorce him right now!"

My body was trembling with rage. Shoving Jonathan off me, I forced myself back to my feet.

But by then, it was obvious they'd already decided I was a thief, which meant they weren't going to listen to a single word I said.

I picked up my cracked phone and tried to call the police.

Framing someone and spreading false accusations were crimes, too. If they wouldn't listen to me, then I'd let the law do the talking.

However, the touchscreen had apparently stopped working. I pressed it several times and still couldn't get the call to go through, which only made it look to them like I was bluffing.

Jonathan kicked me to the ground again, then stomped my phone to pieces. "Who are you trying to fool? Like you'd dare to call the cops. What, trying to play the victim now?"

That kick landed hard enough to leave my abdomen throbbing with pain, and I couldn't get up right away.

Jonathan reached for Victoria's hand, his gaze tender.

"See? This is exactly what I meant. There aren't any good guys out there besides me. It's all an act. He says he works at the courthouse, but from the looks of it, I'd say he only ever ends up there after getting sued for all his petty crimes."

I forced myself to look at Victoria. She didn't pull her hand away. Instead, she leaned into him and started wiping her tears.

My blood ran cold.

"You set me up!" I said through gritted teeth.

Jonathan kicked me again, right in the chest. "Quit making things up! I'm calling the cops this second to get you arrested for theft!"

He really did make the call.

Not long after, a group of men in cheap uniforms came rushing in. None of them had badge numbers as they dragged me over, cuffed me to a table leg, and started pummeling me.

I had no way to fight back, and there was nowhere to dodge. Before long, the taste of blood filled my mouth. They'd probably broken one of my ribs because even breathing sent a stabbing pain through my chest.

On top of that, they forced me to the ground and stomped on my face.

No one seemed to think anything was wrong, and no one questioned who these men really were.

I struggled to grab hold of Victoria's pant leg. "They're not real—"

She kicked my hand away before I could finish, her face twisting with disgust and contempt.

"Michael, the only reason I agreed to your proposal in the first place was that I'd fought with Jonathan back then and wanted to get back at him."

After Jonathan got out of prison, he hadn't turned over a new leaf. He tracked Victoria down and threatened her parents' lives, forcing her to marry him. After they got married, it didn't take much to set him off. Whenever he was unhappy, he would hit her, and he even forced her to go out and work just so she could support his drinking and gambling.Victoria couldn't take it anymore, and that was when she finally gathered the courage to file for divorce.Jonathan didn't deny any of his abusive behavior. He even shouted in court, "She was mine in the first place! I did seven years for her! So what if I hit her? That's between us. It's our business. None of you has any right to interfere!"I tamped down the surge of emotions in my chest, tapped the gavel, and brought the courtroom back under control. Then, based on the law and taking into account the medical records, the photos of her injuries, and the testimony from neighbors Victoria had submitted, I granted the divorce and sente

"You said you were fooled, so what about the child you're carrying with Jonathan? Was that fake, too?" I questioned. My words hit Victoria like a knife straight through the heart. She stopped sobbing, her body trembling as her face turned pale, and she couldn't bring herself to look at me.I didn't stop there. "You told him to break my hands, didn't you?"She covered her face and broke out in sobs, unable to say a single word. As I watched her, the last trace of attachment I had left disappeared completely. This marriage had been a mistake from the very beginning.I looked at Victoria and said, "I'm suing Jonathan for defamation, vigilantism, and impersonating law enforcement. I'm also charging him with aggravated assault."Furthermore, I'm filing for divorce and reclaiming the 1.2 million dollars I gave you in engagement gifts. Our marriage was, in essence, fraudulent."It was as if I had dumped a bucket of cold water over her, snuffing out the last bit of hope she had left.

Those men were Jonathan's cronies. He'd paid them to pose as police officers and fool Victoria and her family. When it came to the missing gold bracelet, I finally spoke."There are surveillance cameras in the living room and hallway of Victoria's residence. I suggested installing them last month after her mom slipped near the bathroom. It was meant to prevent another accident. Jonathan wouldn't know about that."The officer taking notes paused for a second, then nodded. "Alright. We'll pull the footage right away."Just as I expected, the surveillance cameras had recorded everything.About an hour before the New Year's Eve dinner, Jonathan had used the excuse of going to the bathroom to slip into Diana's bedroom. He checked the hallway first, making sure no one was around, then went straight to the nightstand, opened the drawer carefully, and took out a red jewelry box. After opening it, he stared at the gold bracelet inside, and a flicker of greed passed through his eyes befor

"Impersonating law enforcement officers, huh? That takes nerve. None of you is getting away with this!"Jonathan's face drained of color, and his body trembled despite himself. He opened his mouth to argue, but Brandon cut him off with a stern order, "Take them away. Everyone goes back to the station for questioning. Anyone who resists will be charged with obstruction!"The officers moved in immediately. In a matter of seconds, Jonathan, Victoria, and the neighbors who had taken part in beating me were all restrained. The moment the handcuffs closed, Jonathan panicked. "That's impossible! How could he be a judge? He's just a show-off! This has to be fake."Only then did I understand why he had dared to do this. He thought I was a pushover.Victoria was scared out of her wits. She grabbed onto an officer's arm, crying as she tried to explain, "Chief Norris, Jonathan tricked me. I didn't know those were fake police. I'm a victim, too!"Brandon ignored her pleas. He simply frowned

Brandon immediately had someone remove the dog collar from my neck and lift me onto a stretcher. He took out his phone and pulled up a video. The fury in his eyes was obvious as he spoke. "If someone hadn't called the police, and if I hadn't seen the video online, recognized you right away, and come here myself, this would have turned into a murder case!"There were still some people in the crowd who had enough sense.Jonathan held his stomach and grimaced, but he still refused to give up as he struggled to his feet."A judge? Surely you're mistaken! He's a thief. He got punished in high school for stealing from his classmates, and now he's stealing my mother-in-law's gold bracelet. He's just a guy with sticky fingers. Someone like him couldn't possibly be a judge."Victoria swallowed and chimed in, "That's right. I'm his wife. He stole my mom's gold bracelet, and he also stole other girls' underwear to sell. I thought he went too far, so I wanted everyone to teach him a lesson."

Blood flooded my vision as my consciousness slipped out from under me.I came to when a bucket of cold water was dumped straight over my head, and every part of my body hurt badly. The park was still packed with people, men and women, old and young alike. When they saw how close I was to dying, some of them started to back off."At least he's still alive. I think we've gone far enough.""Yeah, it's the holidays. Nobody wants to get dragged into a murder case."Jonathan clearly had no intention of letting things end there. He pulled out his phone and tapped into an e-commerce app. "I found his account. Just like I said, he's been stealing women's underwear and selling it online. It's disgusting."He deliberately angled the screen toward a few of the women nearby, and they were instantly outraged."Wait, that's the lingerie I lost a few days ago!"Her husband immediately stepped forward and slammed his fist into my face. "You've got some nerve stealing my wife's underwear. I'll k
