Chapter 3

Penulis: Yesterday's Sun
Gianna and I had originally met through an online game.

I was a senior in high school back then, weighing around 275 pounds. I was given the nickname "Porky" by the guys in my class, and while the girls didn't join in out in the open, whenever I walked past them, they'd whisper under their breath and burst out laughing together.

I remembered one P.E. class where we had a 1,000-meter run. I came in dead last, gasping so heavily that I felt like I was going to pass out.

I then recalled the girl I used to have a crush on, who was standing at the finish line, taking several steps back in horror as I staggered up to her. "You'd better stay away from me! You'll literally crush me to death with your weight!"

In that instant, the entire class roared with laughter.

I sought refuge in the online game that evening, having zero desire to talk to anyone.

That was when Gianna sent me an in-game friend request. She had heard my voice back then and kept pressing me. "Your voice sounds incredible! There's no way you're not a voice actor!"

Gianna and I ended up becoming regular gaming partners from that point onward.

If our teammates flamed me, Gianna would turn on her mic to back me up. "Isn't this just a game? Why are you snapping at my boyfriend?"

She would also keep me company and talk to me when I was feeling down. "Who says being fat makes you unattractive? Your chubby physique actually gives off such a comforting feeling! I like you regardless of how you look, Zachary!"

I genuinely believed her. I thought I might actually deserve to be loved for the very first time after hearing her "regardless of how you look" comment.

But that all changed six months ago when Gianna stumbled across my old social media profile linked to my gaming account, which listed my real name and high school name.

She started acting distant after that. She went from exchanging dozens of messages with me in one day to just sending me "good morning" and "good night" messages.

I asked her if something was bothering her, and she only said she was feeling a lot of pressure because of her exams.

I realized then that it was never about the exams. Gianna had obviously found out what I looked like in real life.

She didn't break up with me right away, though, since I could help her rank up in her games, sort out her study notes, and comfort her when she was upset.

She didn't want to lose a convenient emotional punching bag, so she waited until the day before the new semester started and used a dice game to pass me off to someone else while keeping her hands clean.

I suddenly heard my phone ring, and instead of ignoring it, I picked it up.

Gianna's voice was sharp with impatience. "What's up with you and Natalia tag-teaming in the group chat?"

"Natalia is just speaking up for me. How are we 'tag-teaming'?"

Gianna scoffed. "Do you really think someone like Natalia would ever stick up for a guy for no good reason? You'd better not think she's into you just because you have a nice voice. Natalia has ridiculously high standards. Cameron's been pursuing her for ages, and she still hasn't given him the time of day."

I fell silent for a moment before saying, "You seem to know Cameron pretty well."

Gianna paused momentarily, then said, "Cameron and I are in the same group chat. Isn't it perfectly normal for me to be acquainted with Cameron?"

"Is it to the point where you used matching profile pictures with him?"

Gianna was clearly caught off guard for a second. "Cameron was the one who insisted on doing it! We were just messing around, Zachary!"

"Isn't he interested in Natalia?"

"Just because Cameron likes Natalia doesn't mean they're an item."

Gianna froze the second she said that.

I chuckled to myself. It seemed like they talked to each other in private more than I had expected.

Gianna lost her temper. "You'd better stop shifting the blame to other people, Zachary! You're really going to force my hand here, aren't you? I've seen what you actually look like, so even though I'm fine with an online relationship, we'd never work out in real life.

"You can't really blame me for it. It's totally normal for women to like attractive men. I'm already being nice to you by not blocking you outright, Zachary."

I held my phone tightly as the dull ache in my chest finally faded completely. "I should really thank you for being so considerate, then."

Gianna completely missed the sarcastic note in my voice, her tone taking on a gentler edge as she said, "You shouldn't attend the gathering tomorrow. I'll pay you back the 450 dollars.

"Natalia will be attending as well. She's the undisputed beauty in the group chat, so you're just going to humiliate yourself even more by standing next to her."

I asked nonchalantly, "How about Cameron?"

Gianna sounded slightly uneasy as she replied, "Cameron will be attending as well. You shouldn't overthink it, Zachary. Nothing is going on between Cameron and me."

I hung up the phone. It seemed like tomorrow's gathering would be even livelier than I had anticipated.

I couldn't sleep a wink that night. I tossed and turned in bed, unable to stop thinking about everything Natalia had said. I honestly had no recollection of it, but she'd held onto that memory for a whole decade. It was then that my phone screen suddenly lit up. Natalia had sent me a message. "Have you reached home?""Yeah.""Remember to put some ointment on your wrist."I stared at the screen, hesitated for a second, and finally voiced the question that had been bugging me. "Did you figure out who I was a long time ago?"Natalia remained idle for quite some time before replying, "Yes.""You can actually recognize me from my high school photo?"Natalia replied without missing a beat. "I knew it was you right away since you really haven't changed all that much."I glanced down at the photo posted in the group chat, where I was so chubby that my eyes were squeezed into slits. I couldn't help but wonder how I still looked the same. I was pretty sure Natalia was looking at me throu

Gianna's expression completely soured the moment Natalia finished speaking. "You're actually taking this whole game thing seriously, Natalia? Zachary and I have been together for 11 months, so keep your nose out of our business!"Natalia looked at her and said coldly, "You've been together for 11 months, yet you still put him up as a wager."Gianna was completely rendered speechless. Those around didn't dare to speak up, though the way everyone was staring at her spoke volumes.Gianna gritted her teeth and turned to me. "I know I was out of line tonight, but I have no intention of breaking up with you. I was just playing a game with the other women in the group. Do you really have to take it this far, Zachary?"I rubbed my wrist where her grip had left a red mark and suddenly felt a wave of exhaustion. Gianna still didn't think she had done anything wrong even at this point. She just figured I was throwing a tantrum. If I were still that 275-pound guy in that photo, she wouldn't

Those in the private room went wild the moment I said that and instantly started a ten-second countdown, their voices practically loud enough to tear the roof off.Natalia obviously didn't expect me to scoop her up out of nowhere, so she instinctively tightened her hold around my neck.I suddenly caught the faint scent of gardenias on her again as her long hair brushed against my arm. She was so light that she barely felt like anything in my arms. I merely thought that ten seconds was nothing for me—even if I held her for another ten minutes, I wouldn't even break a sweat. The buzz-cut guy walked over with his phone held up. "Look over here, Zachary! We definitely have to capture this moment!"I angled my body to block his phone. "Put your phone away."The buzz-cut guy backed off a little, still wearing a teasing grin. "Got it! I know we can't just go around taking photos of your girlfriend!"That single "girlfriend" comment sent another wave of laughter through the room.I not

Those present in the private room turned to look at Natalia. They had been so hyped up while designing those couple tasks earlier. They were picturing Natalia feeding cake to a 275-pound guy, posing hand in hand for photos, and getting swept up in a bridal carry. They thought that it would be absurd no matter how one looked at it; after all, given how big I was in the high school photo, I probably couldn't even bend down properly, much less pick Natalia up.Yet, right now, not a single person could bring themselves to laugh. There were even some people who ended up muttering under their breath. "Natalia didn't lose at all. She practically hit the jackpot.""If I'd known that Zachary looked like this, I would've taken Natalia's place and rolled the dice.""You can keep dreaming. What makes you think he'd even look at you?"Gianna's expression completely fell as she overheard the chatter around her.Cameron spoke up right away. "It was all just a joke anyway, so there's no point i

Those in the private room instantly froze in surprise after hearing that name."W-What?""Z-Zachary Shaw? You mean the one…""Is this for real?"The buzz-cut guy's eyes went wide. His mouth gaped open for a few seconds, but he couldn't get a full sentence out to save his life. He dug out that old high school photo posted in the group chat and held up his phone to compare. In that photo, my neck was buried under fat, my stomach was pushed up against the desk, and my uniform was practically busting at the seams, while the person standing in front of him now had broad shoulders and a trim waistline. He couldn't help but swallow nervously. "I-Is this even the same person?"There was no reply, as everyone in the room was doing the same thing—looking down at their phones, staring up at me, double-checking the photo, then looking right back up.It was then that a young woman in the corner said softly, "His eyes and nose are the same, but after losing all that weight, his face—"She d

I pushed open the door just as the countdown hit zero, prompting everyone inside to fall completely silent. Those in the private room instantly locked their eyes on me. There was someone who held up a glass, completely forgetting to drink, while another still had a smirk plastered on his face, caught completely off guard. The buzz-cut guy, who was the nearest to the door, froze for a moment before asking, "Who are you looking for? Did you walk into the wrong room?"Then, a young woman nearby chimed in. "It's all good even if you got the wrong room! We're all freshmen at Halport University! Come join the fun!""Exactly! Come have a seat!"Those who had complained about the lack of seats were suddenly the most eager to make room for me.I didn't budge, keeping my eyes fixed right on the middle of the table. I noticed the red lettering on the white cake, sticking out like a sore thumb. "Welcome, Zachary—Our 220lb Buddy!"There were two extra-wide chairs set up next to each other ne
