“Say it,” Julian said. “Say it right now.”

The King's mouth worked. His eyes were on his son, huge and wet, and his hands plucked at the coverlet like a man trying to hold on to a wall that was falling.

Aldric stood quietly in the doorway, his empty hands folded. He did not smile. He did not need to.

“Julian,” the King whispered. “Your mother did not die of the marks.”

Raven's story and mine, I thought. Two mothers, two lies, two children raised on a grave with nothing in it.

“Julian. Are you awake?”“Now I am.” The mattress shifted, and a warm hand found my hip in the dark. “What's wrong?”“Nothing. Everything.” I sat up against the headboard and pulled my knees to my chest. The palace was silent. A single lamp burned low on the dresser. “I need your help with something. And I don't know how to say it without sounding strange.”He sat up too, hair rumpled, gold flickering and fading in his eyes. “Say it strange.”“It's Clarissa.”“Has she said something?”“No. She's been perfect. That's the problem.&rdquo

Michael's POV“Tell me you didn't sign it.”My father's face did not move. He stood by the narrow window of the guest wing with his back to me, looking down at the outer court, where four thousand western wolves were drawing up in ranks beyond the walls.“Father.”“I heard you.”“Then answer.”“It is not that simple, Michael.”“Yes, it is.” My voice cracked, and I let it. “Cassian's herald stood at the gate an hour ago and read a contract aloud. A betrothal. Raven's name. Cassian's name. And at the bottom, the witnesses.

“The oak that bleeds silver.”I read the line again. Three times. The paper trembled so hard in my fingers that Julian took my wrist to hold it still.Little bird. I thought of Clarissa's blanket, the single bird stitched in dark thread, and a shiver ran down my arms that had nothing to do with the cold.“Do you know it?” he asked his mother.“No.” Maren's eyes were wet. “But Raiden told me once of a grove where the Silver Court took its vows. A place where the old oaks wept silver sap in autumn. It was burned when the Court fell.”“Burned.”“Or so the stories say.&rdqu

Julian's POV“You told me I was tired.”My mother said it quietly. She sat on the edge of my father's bed with her hands folded in her lap, and she did not look at him. She looked at the coverlet, at the pale stitched wolves, as if she could not bear the weight of his face.“Maren...” the King whispered.“Let me say it, Marcus. I have carried it for so long that I do not know how to put it down.” She drew a breath. “Three nights before I left, I came to you with a casket of root from Aldric's study. I put it in your hands. I told you what I thought it was. I told you whose hands had put it there.”“I remember.”

Julian's POV“She's at the gate.”Nathan said it from the doorway, breathless, with dust on his boots and the look of a man who had run the whole length of the palace. I was on my feet before he finished.“How many with her?”“Twelve riders. Eastern colors. And a carriage.” He swallowed. “Julian, the guards at the outer wall have orders from Aldric to turn her away. The eastern prince's wolves are holding the gate. It's going to come to blood.”“Not today.”I took the stairs three at a time. Raven was beside me, her borrowed gown hitched in one fist, Raiden's ring on her thumb. Damon's bo

In the dead of night, when you were six months old. With a case of papers and two guards and a letter that named Aldric.”Julian made a sound. It was not a word.“She had found the root,” the King went on. “In a casket in Aldric's study. She came to me with it, white-f
