Chapter 3

Author: The Warmhearted
I instinctively raised my hand, and a brilliant, almost translucent light erupted from my palm, as if it could cut through space itself. It was blindingly bright, like the sun.

In that instant, the high-level zombie that had charged at me froze in midair. It couldn't move, its rotten body bound by countless transparent threads. I hadn't even realized what was happening when the threads suddenly tightened and tore the zombie apart into dozens of pieces.

I was stunned. I looked at my hand and saw transparent light still flickering across my fingertips, warm and burning. It felt unfamiliar, like something inside me had just awakened and was trying to break free. "W-What is this…"

I suddenly heard a faint cough coming from behind me. I turned and found Queenie lying on the ground, her abdomen covered in blood. She was staring right at me, her eyes wide in disbelief as she said hoarsely, "T-That's your ability…"

I rushed over and dropped to my knees beside her. I tried my best to stem the bleeding, but blood kept pouring out. The translucent lights still flickered across my hand, and I was drenched in sweat from panic. "Please don't talk anymore, Queenie. I'll bring you to—"

"Wait," Queenie gasped as she grabbed my wrist, her grip surprisingly strong. "What ability did you use just now?"

I looked down at my hands, shaking my head helplessly. "I-I have no idea… I-I didn't want you dying on me, so…"

Queenie fixed her eyes on me for a few seconds before letting out a sudden chuckle. She ended up coughing blood from the laugh, but her eyes flared with unbelievable excitement. "I-It's actually Spatial Severance. It actually exists. I-I always assumed it was nothing more than a legend…"

She tightened her grip on my wrist. "There are fewer than 20 people in the entire apocalyptic world with space-type abilities! Spatial Severance is the only Mythic-rank path in the entire spatial branch! Its raw power beats every elemental ability out there!"

I was stunned after finding out that it was a Mythic-rank ability.

"Whitney's A-rank doesn't hold a candle to you," Queenie said before letting go of my wrist, looking deathly pale. "Oh, snap out of it already and come help me to my feet! I've got this bleeding under control, so go check for other casualties."

I came back to my senses and quickly helped her up. She took out a hemostatic shot from her belt and jabbed it into her abdomen without so much as a flinch.

The people from the settlement came running over with their weapons. The moment they saw the zombie remains scattered everywhere, they stopped dead. Then, a young man rushed over and asked, "W-Who did this, Queenie?"

Queenie glanced at me and said nothing. I tried to speak up, but I couldn't think of anything to say.

That young man looked at me after following Queenie's gaze, his expression changing from confusion to shock and then to respect and awe.

I looked at my palm, and though the light had faded, the warmth remained. I felt as though the whole world had suddenly shifted before me.

Queenie was helped into the room once her bleeding had stopped.

I followed her and stood awkwardly beside the bed, not knowing what to do.

She pointed to the stool beside her and said, "Have a seat."

I sat down but then stood up again. "I'll go get you some water."

"I told you to sit down," Queenie ordered in a tone that brooked no argument.

I had no choice but to sit down again.

She leaned back against the head of the bed, her face remaining deadly pale. She stared at me for quite a while before asking, "Do you have any idea what Spatial Severance actually means?"

I shook my head.

She explained carefully, "It means once you reach your potential, there are only a handful of people in the entire post-apocalyptic world who could ever stop you. It means Whitney's cheap mind games don't amount to anything against you."

I was completely caught off guard, finding it hard to believe that I was an ability user.

Queenie continued, "You've truly been through a lot during those three years…"

I stood frozen, staring at her pale face. It had been three years, and during that period, nobody had ever said anything like that to me.

I turned and walked outside. The sky was already beginning to brighten.

Queenie remained silent for quite a while before she turned to her subordinate and said, "Go look into it and find out what actually went down at Northvale Base three years ago."

I tightened my grip on Queenie's hand.Queenie calmly continued, "I don't even know why I decided to save you—it was probably the look in your eyes. You were barely alive, but there was no fear in them, only exhaustion."I paused for a beat and then said, "I didn't see any reason to keep living back then."Queenie instantly looked up at me.I looked at her and said, "It's different now, though."She chuckled softly before leaning against my shoulder again. The campfire crackled, pushing back the utter darkness of the wasteland that stretched into the night.I wasn't afraid anymore, as I had Queenie by my side.…It was three years later, and the zombie outbreak slowly quieted down, with major bases forming an alliance to start rebuilding society. In the meantime, our settlement kept expanding, and we welcomed hundreds of homeless survivors. There were some who handled farming, some who went hunting, and some who were taking care of patrols. Though life was hard, it was peacef

Whitney collapsed on the ground. She glared at me, her gaze full of spite and pure hatred. "Y-You'll regret this…"I ignored her, turned on my heel, and walked over to Queenie. She held her wounded shoulder, her face pale as she smiled. "I'm fine, Maverick. I'm not going to die from this."I reached out to steady her, my hands trembling as I held her up.In the meantime, the members of Nocturne Organization scattered and ran the moment the Void Domain dissipated. I didn't bother pursuing them, either.Damian Lister, Base Commander of Northvale Base, showed up with reinforcements after the dust had already settled. He took one look at Whitney on the ground, then at Queenie and me. Without a word, he signaled with his hand. His guards instantly stepped up to apprehend Whitney.Whitney glared daggers at me as she was hauled away, shrieking, "You're nothing but someone I threw away, Maverick! Who the hell do you think—"Her voice gradually faded into the distance.I stood where I w

A piercing screech broke the night, followed right after by running footsteps, shouting, and the terrifying growls of mutant beasts.I grabbed my machete and ran outside. I spotted Queenie standing atop the wall, silver-blue light gathering in her hand.Masses of shadows were closing in from the distance. They were mutant beasts pumped full of drugs, double the size of normal zombies and covered in dripping, corrosive slime. There were roughly over a dozen figures further back, all of whom were members of Nocturne Organization.Whitney was leading them. She had lost a lot of weight, her eyes were deeply sunken, and her face was marked with scars. However, the hatred in her eyes had grown stronger over the past year.Queenie looked back at me and said, "Fall back, Maverick."I held my ground as the mutant beasts started bashing against the wall, breaking the stonework and kicking up clouds of dust.Queenie leaped down from the wall as silver-blue energy manifested into deadly blad

"Let's go," Queenie said.I nodded and walked out of Northvale Base alongside her. I could hear the celebration going on behind us, but it was none of our business anymore. I didn't look back for a second as I stepped past the base gates. I knew that once certain doors closed, there was no point in looking back.Queenie broke the silence as we headed back to the settlement. "How does it feel, Maverick?"I considered it for a second before shaking my head. "It didn't feel as great as I thought it would."She tightened her grip on my hand and said, "It's because you're nothing like her."It didn't take long for the news of Whitney's banishment to hit every settlement. It was all anyone on the streets could talk about. "Did you hear what happened? Whitney only made it to A-rank by leeching off some ordinary man!""He was her personal cash cow for three years, and she repaid him by faking his test results and drugging him!""She got what she deserved! She's nothing but a stray d

In that instant, everyone at the venue fell silent and stared wide-eyed at the holographic screen, then began whispering among themselves.Whitney turned completely pale. She tried to say something, but no words came out. Caleb Lister, her fiance, stood beside her with a frozen smile. He slowly looked at Whitney, his eyes full of disbelief. In the meantime, the display kept running. It showed photos of packets of suppressor drugs sealed in clear bags, right alongside Whitney's signed receipts. Then the witness was brought out. Queenie's subordinate escorted someone from the crowd and brought him onto the stage. He was dressed in gray, his head lowered as his whole body shook. He dropped to his knees the moment he reached the stage. He was a staff member from Northvale Base's testing facility. He was trembling as he exclaimed, "I-I'll confess! Whitney came to me three years ago with a massive payoff in contribution points to alter Maverick's records to a non-ability user! "She

I barely got a wink of sleep over the next three days. It wasn't that I didn't want to sleep; I simply couldn't.Queenie's subordinate returned on the fourth night, dragging in someone from the Northvale Base testing facility. That man looked deathly pale as he trembled violently and dropped to his knees the second he walked through the door. "I'll tell you everything!" he said. "I'll tell you whatever you want!"Queenie remained seated, barely glancing at him. That man frantically banged his forehead on the ground. "Whitney came to me three years ago. She claimed Maverick had a rare constitution and that if he ever awakened, he was bound to surpass her. "She handed me a bunch of contribution points and told me to alter the results to show that he was a non-ability user…"I clenched my fists tightly."Go on," Queenie said, her voice totally calm. That man kept his head lowered and continued, "S-She gave me some kind of drug too. She made me spike Maverick's drink after every
