Chapter 9

Author: Lyra Eden
At five a.m., Ian shot up, heart pounding. He had to see Leah. Now.

He made a beeline for the guest room, hand on the doorknob—then froze.

She'd just lost the baby. And she still didn't know they'd taken her uterus, too. No more kids. Ever.

What if she found out?

Nope. He shoved the thought aside. It'd be fine. He and Cecilia had a baby on the way. Leah was sweet—she'd totally raise it like her own.

He pushed the door open. "Leah, are you feel—"

Stopped cold.

The room was empty. Stripped clean. No trace she'd ever been there.

He bolted to the bathroom. She had to be in there.

Swung the door open—clean. Empty.

Panic shot through him. 'Where did she go?'

He snatched his phone. Called. Straight to voicemail.

"The number you've dialed is powered off."

His stomach dropped.

He turned and ran straight into Cecilia.

She blinked. "Ian, what's wrong?"

He grabbed her arm. "Did you see Leah?"

"Leah?" Big innocent eyes. "No. Why?"

"She's gone. I can't find her!"

And there it was—

After getting discharged, Ian showed up again.Seeing the rejection in her eyes, he spoke fast."I'm here to ask if you'll come with me—to finalize the divorce."They'd signed the papers, but without the court decree, they were still technically married.Leah blinked, surprised. She'd been planning to bring it up—didn't expect him to beat her to it.Ian looked away, eyes shining. "Don't look at me, Leah. I'm scared I'll take it back."Only he knew how hard this was."Okay," Leah said.***December in Carmoria. Snow was coming down hard. The moment Leah signed, she let out a breath—like something heavy had finally lifted. They stepped out of the courthouse, decree in hand. She was turning to leave when Ian grabbed her arm."Leah... can you come with me? Just for a bit?"She looked back. His eyes were pleading. She paused."I won't do anything. I swear," he said, panicked. She nodded and got in the car.Ian drove in silence. When they pulled up, Leah froze. It was a cem

After last night's call, Rex had been curious. But hearing Ian's first words? He laughed. He looked up slowly. "Ian Fillion, what exactly do you think Leah is?""She's my wife," Ian snapped, zero hesitation.Rex's smile didn't budge. "So to you, a wife's just something to pass around? Yeah... I don't see it that way. Leah's priceless. Nothing could ever replace her."He took a sip of coffee. "If that's all, I'll head out. Leah likes my breakfast. I need to get back.""You're living together?!" Ian shot up, grabbed Rex by the collar. "I'll kill you!"His fist flew—just as the café door slammed open."Stop!"Leah burst in—but froze when she looked up.The chandelier above them cracked loose."Watch out!!"Both men glanced up.Leah lunged.A second later, Leah yanked Rex out of the way. They hit the floor just as the massive chandelier came crashing down.Screams broke out across the café.Ian didn't move—frozen. The chandelier slammed down with a deafening crash.Flat on

Ian went white at Leah's words. All those years—he'd been wrong. She wasn't allergic. She'd just stopped eating mango because he hated it.Leah kept eating, slow and deliberate. Sweetness on her tongue. She smiled at Rex. "This mango cake is so good."Rex looked down, soft smile. "Want more? Take it."She glanced at the other desserts, torn. "They all look amazing..."She wanted to try everything. Rex didn't hesitate—he piled a piece of each on her plate. Leah stared at the overloaded pile, eyes wide. "I'll get fat."Rex laughed. "You won't."She held the cakes, unsure. "Okay, I'll just have a tiny bite.""Fine." He didn't even blink.Ian watched, stunned. The flashbacks hit hard—how she used to stress over snacks, always asking if something would make her gain weight. She only ate if he said it was fine. Now? Everything had flipped."Leah!" Owen jumped in fast, trying to bail out his boy. "Hey—remember me?"Leah didn't miss a beat. "Sorry. I'm divorced from Ian. Since we'r

In the ballroom, Owen slung an arm around Ian's shoulders."Dude, what's with the corpse face? Still didn't find Leah?"Ian looked wrecked. He turned to Owen."If you mess up—like, really screw it—how do you fix it?"Owen cracked up. "Whoa, never thought I'd see the day. What, she won't come back with you? Bro, just grow a pair, drag her—holy crap."Ian stiffened. "What now?""That's her, right? That's Leah!"Ian whipped around—and froze. She'd just walked in.Sea-green dress, simple cut, hugging every curve. Bare shoulders, soft collarbones, hair spilling to her waist. No makeup. Didn't need it.The whole room stared."Leah... Damn. She looks insane. Ian, you lucky bastard," Owen blurted.Ian felt like he was waking up. He always knew she was beautiful—but this? This was unreal. He stepped forward without thinking, ready to pull her behind him, shield her from everything. Then some guy showed up at her side. The guy in the black suit slid Leah's hand into his arm. They

Leah looked down at the hand wrapped around her wrist. She'd held this hand a thousand times—back when it actually made her happy. Now? It just made her sick. She yanked her arm back without a second thought. "Mr. Fillion, try having a little dignity."Ian swayed, barely upright. That cold, formal tone knocked the air out of him. He scrambled to speak."You're here—by my bed—that means you still love me, right? I was wrong. About everything. I'll change! I PROMISE I'll change! You hate Cecilia? Cool! You'll never have to see her again, I swear!"He stared at her like she was his last shot, begging for even a flicker of the way she used to look at him.Leah lowered her eyes. "When are you gonna get it? The one I never want to see again... is YOU."She looked up, voice like ice."I might hate Cecilia, sure. But the person I hate most? That's always been you."Her stare cut through him. "You were the root of all of it, weren't you? No one forced you to lie. Or cheat. Or destroy

Hearing her mention his family—and Cecilia, Ian felt something rip open inside. He lurched forward, panicked."Leah, I know we ruined everything. But I swear—I'll fix it. I'll make it right. I can't even breathe without you."Voice shaking. Eyes desperate.Leah just smiled."You've lied so much, you actually believe your own crap now?"His old words still echoed in her head. She'd never forgotten. Not once. She let out a dry laugh."You loved CECILIA. And for six years, I let myself believe you loved me. But now? She lost her husband, you lost your wife—guess everybody's finally got what they wanted.""No! That's not true!" He reached for her.She flinched. His arm dropped."I was just too stupid," he said, voice wrecked. "So damn blind I couldn't even see what I felt. Leah, the only one I've ever loved is you."She laughed, sharp and cold. Eyes went from distant to deadly. "Ian, I can't afford your kind of love."You 'loved' me, so you honored your parents by playing ho
