Job Interviews

I toss my bag down at the foot of the bed, yank the hobo hoodie off and chuck it into the far corner of the room. Then I collapse onto the mattress with a heavy sigh.

I've gone on a bunch of job interviews these past few weeks. Today made number seven, and I could tell within seconds that this place wasn't interested either.

It's not like I'm shooting for anything impressive here. Forget corporate ladders, I'd happily flip burgers at this point. At first I was applying online, but the last two days I just wandered around downtown and popped into any place with a help-wanted sign taped to the window.

The hobo hoodie sits crumpled on the floor like some discarded rag. I stare it down for a solid minute before groaning in frustration. Honestly, it's a love-hate thing between us. Complicated doesn't even cover it. I want to dump it forever, except I can't. I want to torch it, except I won't. Yeah. Complicated.

Problem is, nobody's handing out jobs to a girl dressed like a hobo. I'd ditch it in a heartbeat, except I'm pretty sure I spotted a Night Shade Pack member on campus that very first day, during lunch, weeks back. Just a flash, gone in a second. Coward that I am, I bolted immediately. No interest whatsoever in reconnecting, making small talk, or swapping numbers with that guy. Hard pass. Caleb confirmed the next night that they really had been around. So, hate it or not, this hoodie's my security blanket.

Caleb keeps insisting I hold off on job hunting since it isn't safe yet, but I refuse to keep mooching off my own cousin forever. He's constantly feeding me. Turns out this whole house is his, and he flat-out won't accept rent from me. A week ago he drove me to campus and handed over a bus pass covering the entire semester. Last week, after yet another rejection, he tried giving me cash and I nearly had a breakdown over it. He just shook his head, told me I was weird, said he'd never met anyone who spiraled over free money before, then dropped the bills straight into my swear jar and walked off.

Honestly, it was never really about money. It's about wanting my own life back, one Night Shade Pack doesn't get a say in. Why can't they just back off already? I crave normal. Werewolves, and whatever else is out there, complicate everything. Some days it's genuinely exhausting, no matter how much gratitude I try to force myself into. Caleb and Corbin are pretty much the only "not normal" people I'm willing to keep around right now.

After showering, I throw on an oversized tee and pajama shorts and shuffle into the living room. Past eight already, still nobody else home. Total silence, total darkness except the glow leaking from under my bedroom door. I flip on the lights and TV, sink into the sofa, and attempt to read.

Waste of time, really. My brain won't quit circling back to a certain not-quite-human golden god. Julian, apparently, that's his name. God, even his name sounds like sin. Girls won't stop talking about him. It's been weeks since I first laid eyes on him, and I still catch sight of him once a week in that same lecture hall, plus a handful of times wandering campus. He's usually flanked by three ridiculously gorgeous girls, none of them human, turning heads everywhere they walk. When he's not with them, human girls swarm him instead, all competing for a scrap of attention. Some of them are painfully obvious about it. Sometimes he seems bored out of his mind by the whole spectacle, other times he clearly eats it up, his gaze dragging over cleavage barely contained or legs bared by skirts so short they might as well not exist. Ugh. Repulsive.

Maybe this one's on me though. I should quit staring. Feels creepy, honestly, but I can't stop myself. Still, I refuse to become one of those pathetic girls fawning all over him, no matter how stupidly attractive the man is.

He won't leave my thoughts alone and it's maddening. Why does he get under my skin like this? Sure, he's gorgeous, fine, but this is ridiculous. I don't want this pull toward him.

Hang on, is my book upside down? I hurl it onto the cushion in irritation right as Caleb's Jeep rolls into the driveway. Headlights sweep briefly across the living room through the blind slats. Engine cuts off, and moments later he's walking through the door.

"Ordering Chinese. What do you want?" he asks, striding past without so much as a glance my way. Classic Caleb. Greetings and pleasantries simply don't exist in his world.

"Whatever you're getting works." Since I'm not paying, requesting anything specific feels rude anyway. Besides, I'll eat literally anything off a menu. Easy like that.

He vanishes into his room, and I catch the murmur of him placing the order before his door shuts. Twenty minutes pass before he reappears, settling onto the couch beside me, hair still damp from a shower, comfortable in tan shorts and a grey tee. He leans over me to grab the remote and starts flipping channels.

"So, Freya Hayes..." he murmurs, like he's tasting the sound of it. The way my name slides off his tongue sends a shiver straight down my spine. I'd just finished signing the attendance sheet as it circulated, and apparently he's only now piecing together my full name. "Freya..." he repeats under his breath, then lets out a low chuckle. "The fvcking irony," he says. "Perfect." Excuse me? What is that supposed to mean? God, the man is exhausting! Is he mocking my name now? Because if so, I will happily gouge his eyes out with this pen. I mean it. I spin around and shoot him a look meant to promise violence, holding my pen up in a stabbing motion for emphasis. He laughs quietly, clearly delighted by my reaction. "Easy with the threats, sweetheart," he whispers, pitched just loud enough for me and every nosy student nearby to catch. "You're putting ideas in my head. Getting me worked up. Giving me all sorts of thoughts..." Oh my god. A strangled little sound, half squeak half whimpe

Freya's POVNobody's home when I get back, same as always. After showering, I throw on pajama pants and a tank top, then scrutinize myself in the mirror. There's zero chance anyone in this house misses that massive hickey on my neck. I'd been careful hiding it under my hair all day, but even Harper caught it. We were sipping smoothies at the cafe after my interview with Owen, the manager, when Harper cracked up and said, "Oh, boy, poor Nolan, he never stood a chance, huh?" Her eyes kept drifting to the bruise the entire time. Nolan had looked anywhere but at me, pretending he hadn't noticed or heard a word Harper said. It's impossible to miss, honestly. Caleb definitely won't be thrilled. He's ridiculously overprotective lately. I'm technically an adult, yet my cousin still treats me like some twelve-year-old.I refuse to hole up in my room avoiding everyone until this thing fades. I did enough hiding back at Night Shade Pack, and I despised every second of it.Ugh, fine, decision mad

I glance over my shoulder to watch her stomp away like a queen-child. She is fuming. Her hips sway as she walks away. It's not done intentionally or in an exaggerated way like some girls do either. That's just the way she walks and it's as sexy as fvck and I can't take my eyes off of her, damn it! I can't help the grin from forming on my face. I never had to work to get a girl before. This would be interesting. I live for challenges but I'll be damned if I have to wait for years, like the way Caspian waited for Livana before I claim my erasthai. I watch her disappear from view before I push myself off the wall to stalk back to where I left my bag. I weave through girls standing in front of my bag and books. "Julian, we can continue with our project in my room, if you want. We won't get interrupted there," says my project partner, Serena. "No, I have a class in ten minutes," I tell her as I sling my backpack over my shoulder. "What about later? I'm free the whole day." "I'm

  • From Pack Slave to Lycan Princess   Her Stubborness

Julian's POV The air crackles with electricity between us. The pull is intense. I fight for control but now, my vision is tinged red. My animal side is taking over. The thought of her with some other guy, even just for a simple lunch drives me crazy. Her hiding my mark on her, even a temporary one, just snaps off my control and my lycan takes over. I inhale her incredible, magical scent deeply to calm the beast in me. "Tell me you're not seeing anybody. Tell me there's no other man." She's mine. I can hear the thunderous drum of her heartbeat, the heated blood that rushes through her body, the ragged breathing that matches my own but she remains silent. It doesn't matter. She belongs to me. If there's another man staking a claim on her, I will crush him. I will destroy anything that comes between me and her. The graceful curve of her neck looks so tempting as I run my nose close to it and breathe in her scent deeply one more time. Her scent manages to calm me and excite me at

"I'm not going to tell you my name and I'm not going to show you anything that's mine." "Well...that's too bad, Princess," he says. "I want to see everything that's yours and it's hard to get to know each other if you won't tell me your name. It's going to take a while for us start making out, huh?" What the hell? I stop in my track and turn to look at him. He has that annoying smile that says he knows something that I don't. So very annoying. "Listen here bud, we're not ever going to be making out," I tell him. "Okay. Tomorrow then?" he says with that sexy stupid cocky grin. Ughh!!! I start walking again but I have this urge to stomp my feet like a five-year-old throwing a tantrum. "So....not tomorrow either? Is the next day okay?" I stop again and glare at him. Is he doing this just to annoy me? He bursts out laughing. I have to admit, the sound of his laughter almost makes me melt into a puddle at his feet. It's beautiful. Low and manly yet full of tempting naughtines

  • From Pack Slave to Lycan Princess   Species: Unknown

Werewolves generally have variants earthy smell of the forest. Living among them all my life makes me familiar with their scent. I can spot even the faintest of their scents anywhere. Even Nana had her own unique scent of the wild. The beautiful stranger whose hands are currently gripping my hips and whose lips and nose are firmly buried in my neck has a different kind of scent. It's definitely wild and it's something I'm not familiar with, mixed with the smell of an expensive cologne. He smells rich...and oh, so very good. Like catnip to cats, like crack cocaine to an addict, I can't resist burying my face into his soft silky golden hair, taking a long deep drag of his addictive scent into my starved, deprived lungs. The feel of his lips on my neck is sending bursts of electrical current to every cell and nerve ending in my body. I place my hands on his broad solid shoulders and succumb to the urge to plaster the front of my body to his until there is no part of the front of our bo
