Chapter 2

Author: Phonenix
The vampire's claws were razor-sharp—they went straight through my shoulder blade.

"Ah!" The scream tore out of me as my body locked up on instinct.

The next second—thud. I hit the ground hard, landing in a mess of corpses and blood.

My shoulder was wrecked, yeah, but my insides felt like they'd been rattled loose too. Every organ screamed. I was shaking, drenched in sweat—but underneath all that, I felt relief.

The wound wasn't fatal. I'd make it.

And sure, I was supposed to be treating the Alpha. But the Alpha King was about to die right in front of me. Was I supposed to just stand there and watch?

Saving the Alpha King. Couldn't ask for a better excuse than that.

My communicator had fallen out of my pocket when I hit the ground—buzzing like crazy. I squeezed my eyes shut, pretending to be out cold.

The Alpha King and his guard finally snapped into action. He whipped around, eyes locking on me.

"Get her help—now!"

Then he crushed that vampire's skull with one hand.

Dawn crept in, and the vampires pulled back. The whole battlefield crowded around me as they carried my blood-soaked body toward the Healers' Guild. And thanks to the Alpha King's guards, everyone knew—I'd taken that hit for him.

I knew I'd won this gamble.

Let's see how Anna pins this one on me now.

The healer assigned to patch me up was Julia Smith—Anna's little shadow. The second she saw my face, she froze solid. Eyes wide, the words just tumbled out:

"Ivy? But she's supposed to be in the infirmary—treating the Alpha. What's she doing here?"

The guard who'd brought me in answered, his tone clipped:

"Healer Ivy acted with remarkable courage. She took a wound meant for the Alpha King and saved his life. She is his savior. I expect her to receive the best care possible."

Julia's mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. Nothing came out.

So she was in on it too.

Last time, the entire Guild had pointed fingers at me in unison. Noah must have bought every single one of them.

With the King's guard standing right there, Julia didn't dare send word anywhere. She just got to work—carefully, nervously, cleaning and healing my wound.

The process took two whole hours.

Finally, I let my eyes flutter open, playing confused.

"Where... where am I? What happened?"

The guard leaned in, grinning.

"Healer Ivy—thank the Moon. You're awake. We owe you everything—you saved the Alpha King."

I shook my head, still acting dazed. Then I jolted upright like I'd just remembered something, smacking the cot beneath me.

"Oh no—no, no, no! The Alpha—he's still waiting for me to treat him! I can't be lying here!"

I threw off the blanket and tried to get up, ignoring the blazing pain in my shoulder. The guard rushed forward to stop me.

"Please—you need to rest. The Guild has other healers tending to him—"

I fought his grip, swaying on my feet like I could barely stand.

"No—I have to make sure he's okay. I have to see him."

I played up the panic, forcing myself forward—then clutched my head and stumbled backward. The guard caught me just in time.

I looked up at him, weak and breathless.

"Please... take me there. I need to see the infirmary. I need to know..."

His brow furrowed. "But your condition—"

"I'll crawl there if I have to."

He gave in. Wheeled me over.

By the time we reached the infirmary, the place was swarming with pack members. Heavy silence hung in the air like a storm cloud about to break.

Anna stood outside, her face all manufactured grief.

"I'm so sorry," she said, her voice dripping with false sorrow. "I did everything I could. But the Alpha... he's gone."

Then her tone shifted—just a little.

"Honestly, he might have made it. If Healer Ivy hadn't ignored protocol and done whatever she wanted..."

The Alpha had been the strongest, most respected leader this pack had ever seen. Her words lit a powder keg.

"Where's Ivy? Bring her out!"

"She murdered the Alpha! She's gonna pay!"

"She must be working with the vampires!"

"Kill her! Kill her now!"

I just sat there in my wheelchair, watching her twist the knife.

Then someone spotted me.

"There she is! Ivy—the murderer—she's right here!"

Every head turned. Every pair of eyes locked onto me.

One afternoon, the pup was sprawled across Oliver's lap, playing with a little wooden wolf figurine. He looked up at Oliver, who hadn't taken his eyes off me, and asked in his tiny voice, "Daddy, why do you always smile when you look at Mama?"Oliver blinked, then grinned and tapped his nose. "'Cause Mama's pretty."The pup frowned. "But I don't stare at Mama like that!"Oliver opened his mouth—then went red, completely at a loss.I pretended not to hear, but my ears burned. And Oliver didn't just shower us with kindness. He made sure everyone who'd hurt me paid.Every pack member who'd laid hands on me that day in the infirmary was investigated. The lightest punishment? Lifetime hard labor, hauling rocks in the mines until their backs broke. The man who'd stomped on my injured shoulder? Oliver had him banished—from every pack territory. He'd spend the rest of his life as a rogue, alone and unwanted.Luna got a hefty settlement and help relocating to a new pack. She came to see me befo

"I searched for his birth parents for a long time after that," I said, gently pinching the pup's chubby cheek. "No one ever came forward."Oliver was quiet for a long moment—like he'd gone somewhere else entirely. Then he swallowed hard and repeated, "Found?""Yeah." I nodded, brushing my thumb over the pup's tiny hand. "It was winter too. I don't understand how anyone could abandon something so precious."My voice was heavy with sorrow—but Oliver's face broke into a grin. He shot to his feet, practically vibrating."That's perfect!"The pup and I both stared at him, equally confused. He caught himself, sat back down, and rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I mean... I could... be...""Be his father?"He lifted his head and looked me straight in the eye—dead serious."Healer Ivy, I've fallen for you at first sight. Will you accept me as your mate?"He didn't look away. His eyes were so bright, so intense, it almost scared me.I was completely stunned. The Alpha King—interested in m

As they wheeled me away, I heard the Alpha King's cold voice cut through the chaos behind me:"Take them all. Throw them in the dungeons."Anna completely broke down as they dragged her off. She thrashed and screamed for help—but there was no one left to save her.Noah just stared blankly ahead, offering zero resistance as the royal guards hauled him away. He knew he was finished. With the Alpha dead, he'd been the pack's best shot at the next seat—and he'd thrown it all away to cover for that idiot woman's mess.Yes. Her fault. All her fault."Alpha King—this wasn't my doing! It was all Anna—that bitch—she planned everything!"But the Alpha King didn't even look back. The infirmary fell quiet, just the faint scent of herbs lingering in the air. I lay in soft bedding, breathing easy and even. The top-tier healers had taken care of my wounds—no more pain. But I wasn't asleep. The fire of revenge kept me wired, sharp, awake. Then the door creaked open. Footsteps—closer.Someone stopped b

Anna stumbled back under the weight of their stares—right into Noah's chest. She fisted his shirt, scrambling to hold herself together, forcing out a smile that looked more like a grimace."Th-that's not real... That crystal has to be fake! It's Ivy—she set this up! She seduced the Alpha King into helping her frame us—""Enough."The Alpha King's voice dropped, and his full weight pressed down like a landslide. Anna's legs gave out—she hit the ground, shaking so hard her teeth chattered. The pack knew the truth now. Some clenched their fists, glaring at Anna. Others covered their faces in shame. A few even mumbled awkward apologies toward me.And Luna—Luna was already in front of Anna, hauling her arm back and bringing it down across her face."You filthy bitch! You killed my mate—and you tried to pin it on someone else!"Anna crumpled sideways, her cheek already swelling. She screamed, clutching her face, reaching desperately for Noah."Noah! Noah—help me!""He can't help you now." Th

The Alpha King walked over and helped me back into the wheelchair. His personal healer immediately began tending to my wounds. But the crowd was already stirring again."Wait—so it really wasn't her? Then how did our Alpha die?""But Anna and Noah both confirmed it—they said she did it.""You mean... they were lying?"Anna's composure cracked for a split second. Then she straightened her spine, let go of Noah's arm, and stepped forward—head bowed, playing wounded."Alpha King," her voice came out all soft and sweet, the kind that made people lower their guard, "you're protecting her so fiercely... could it be that you've taken a liking to her?"The crowd erupted."So that's it—the Alpha King is letting lust cloud his judgment!""We'll take this to the Elders—have them strip his title!"Anna kept pouring fuel on the fire."My sister does have some charm, I admit. But she murdered an Alpha. No matter how much you fancy her—even if you are the Alpha King—you can't just twist the truth and

Luna's eyes were bloodshot. She lunged at me and slapped me across the face—hard."You fucking bitch! You murdered my Alpha!"She grabbed my collar, ready to hit me again—but the Alpha King's guard caught her wrist and shoved her back. His gaze swept the crowd, cold as steel."Healer Ivy saved the Alpha King's life. Anyone who lays a hand on her answers to me."But the pack was beyond reason."Don't give a damn who she saved—she killed our Alpha! She pays with her blood!""She's probably a vampire spy! And if you're protecting her, you're one too!"Then they surged forward. One guard against a mob—he couldn't stop them all.Someone grabbed my hair and yanked—a chunk tore right out of my scalp.Someone else threw filthy, stinking water over me.Then they shoved the guard aside and started swinging. Kicking. Punching. My wolf had gone dormant after the vampire attack. I couldn't fight back. All I could do was cling to the wheelchair, grit my teeth, and force the words out:"It wasn't me!
