Nyx's Pov
Alden kept his eyes on the road, and I leaned back slightly, wondering what he had to do with me. He had found me even before I was able to find him. Alden Black Lombardi. A ruthless mafia lord who killed with cruelty and didn't care about anything else other than what he wanted to do. Gary was supposed to lead me to him, but instead, he was killed and I was captured by this guy instead. So, obviously there was going to be a change of plans. The car ride felt endless, the city lights flickering like fleeting memories as they streaked past the windows. Yeah… Memories. They began to resurface in my head. Three years ago, I was captured by a mafia gang and sold to another gang. I was ten at that time, and I had to fight for my life amongst the other girls. Older, more ruthless girls who had been there for a very long time. Some of them had gotten pregnant, some of them had been killed off. The situation I was in was either you survive, or you die. A situation that most of us in this world found ourselves in. The gang I was sold to was called the Iron Claw and at that time, their cruelty knew no bounds. Women, to them, were not human beings and instead, were properties, tools to be discarded. I was thrown into a room with about fifty other girls who died one by one. The older girls quickly established dominance over us. One girl, Naomi, had tried to fight back. She refused to comply with their orders, screaming at them with a defiance that could have inspired us all if we weren’t so terrified. But that defiance cost her everything as they made an example out of her, dragging her into the courtyard one cold night. We were all forced to watch as they beat her to death, her screams echoing in my ears. Her blood stained the concrete, and I knew then that this place wasn’t just a prison, it was hell. It was my awakening. I survived by being invisible. I never drew attention to myself, keeping my head down and doing as I was told. But that didn’t mean I escaped their observation entirely. One of the leaders, a man named Victor, took a particular interest in me. His eyes were always on me, leering at me like I was some prize he was waiting to claim. One night, he cornered me in the back corridors of their hideout. I still remember the smell of cheap whiskey on his breath and the feel of his rough hands grabbing me. I fought back, scratching and kicking with every bit of strength I had, and somehow, I managed to grab a broken piece of glass from the ground. I didn’t hesitate. I drove it into his shoulder, the glass sinking deep into his flesh. His roar of pain echoed through the building, and I knew I was done for. But instead of killing me, Victor laughed. He yanked the glass out of his shoulder, blood dripping down his arm, and smiled like he had found his next toy. “You’ve got fire, little girl.” He said, his voice laced with malice, “I like that.” From that night on, he made my life a living hell. He didn’t kill me outright, no, that would have been too easy. He broke me down piece by piece, starving me, locking me in dark, suffocating rooms for days at a time, and forcing me to watch as he tormented the others. But that was his mistake. By keeping me locked up, but still in the midst of his men, I was able to observe how they behaved, how they fought, I learnt them all. So I began to plan my escape. They didn't have a lot of men in their gang, but due to their iron fists that they used to reign over us, we were scared of them, but fear can only go so far. I wasn’t the only one. There was an older girl, Helena, who had been there longer than most of us. She was ruthless, even to the other girls, but I could tell it was a survival mechanism. She didn’t trust anyone, not even me. But when I started whispering about escape plans in the darkness of our shared cell, she listened. “We’ll die trying.” She had said, her voice barely audible. “We’re dead already if we don’t.” I replied. From then on, we worked together in the shadows. Helena knew things I didn’t, she had been there longer and knew where the guards got lazy, where they hid their weapons. I had the fire, and she had the knowledge. The night we struck was the night Victor decided to make an example out of another girl. Her name was Lydia. She was barely seventeen, and she had tried to smuggle food for one of the younger girls. Victor dragged her into the courtyard, and the rest of us were forced to line up and watch. That was the moment Helena and I had been waiting for. While Victor and his lackeys were distracted, we moved. Helena slipped a sharpened piece of metal, stolen from a broken gate into my hand. My heart pounded as we crept toward the storage room where the guards kept their weapons. Inside, there were three men. They were supposed to be on watch, but they were laughing, playing cards, and passing a bottle of whiskey around. They didn’t hear us until it was too late.Chapter 122 Nyx's Pov I crashed into the house, opening the doors loudly. Alden was seated on the couch, his eyes narrowing the moment he met my eyes. “What's it?” “Actually, there's a lot of trouble which I may or may not have caused but the downline is, I need help. Cassandra and a few others have been captured by Marcello, an evil uncle.” I explained, shedding the outer clothes I wore that were already stained with blood. “Marcello?”“Yeah. I don't think we have time to stay here and explain but we need all the men we can get, there's no need to stay and plan to catch them off guard, they already know that we are going to come no matter what, it's better to just face them head on.” I murmured, running towards my room and taking out all the weapons I owned. Alden rose to his feet, jaw tight, “You were supposed to lay low, Nyx.” He growled, following me to the hallway where I was strapping on twin daggers to my thigh, “You promised you wouldn’t do anything reckless.”“I didn’t
Chapter 121 Author's Pov Marcello stood at the head of the long, dimly lit hall, his fingers drumming impatiently against the armrest of his chair as he stared at the other council members who were sitting very quietly on their chairs. The flickering lights cast sharp shadows across his face, emphasizing the irritation in his cold, calculating eyes. The tension in the room was very thick, his subordinates shifting uneasily under his glare. The sound of hurried footsteps broke the silence as one of his guards stumbled in, breathless and shaken."My Lord, I… I have news to report.” The guard panted, bowing deeply as he rushed into the room. Marcello’s sharp gaze pinned him in place, “Speak and be fast about it. Do not waste my time.”The man swallowed hard, “The thing is… We found out that... That Nyx, she has escaped. She knocked out the others and escaped, along with Liam and Yasmin. We can't find those two as well. For a moment, silence hung in the air. Then, with a sudden moveme
Chapter 120Nyx's Pov I stared at Yasmin, blinking, "Your men?"She smirked, "Did you really think I wouldn’t have my own people in this whole situation? The moment I heard that Marcello was coming, I asked some people to infiltrate his guards. I wanted to come and warn you but it was too late, we had already been put into house arrest.” Liam shifted beside her, "Marcello doesn’t know we’ve compromised his men, which gives us the advantage. But we need to move fast. If he realizes something is wrong, he’ll change the security around the mansion."I glanced back at the ongoing fight. Yasmin’s planted guards were making it look real, striking down Marcello’s loyalists and drawing attention away from the inside."Alright, so what’s next?" I asked.“We bypass them and then go to Alden, he should be able to help us take control of the houses back. It won't take long for us to leave the main mansion to the outer part, though it might take longer as the outside may be more guarded than it
Chapter 119 Nyx's Pov“I know but how the hell are you going to leave this place without being spotted. There are men everywhere.” Alexandra muttered furiously. She had been whispering since we started talking about how to escape. I didn't say anything, just motion med towards the window. Cassandra's eyes narrowed, "You're not seriously thinking of escaping through that window, are you?"I walked over to the small, barred window on the far side of the room. It was high up, but nothing I couldn't handle. The bars were old, rusted at the edges. With enough force, they could be broken."I don’t think it. I know it." I turned back to face them, "Stay put. I’ll get myself out."Valeria gave me a doubtful look, "How do you plan to…?"I didn’t answer. Instead, I climbed onto the ledge and pressed my hands against the bars. With a sharp exhale, I pulled. The metal groaned in protest, but I kept going. My arms trembled with the effort, my fingers aching, but then a loud snap and the bar bro
Chapter 118 Nyx's Pov “It's true. What you were thinking… Cassandra is your mother.” Alexandra said, handing me the reports. I opened it quickly, going through it. A smile subconsciously rested in my lips but it was short-lived as Valeria crashed into the hideout as I had come to call it, panic written so vividly on her face. “What's wrong? Why do you look like that?” “They found it! He's back! That person is back!” She said, her voice shaking. “What are you talking about? What did they find? And who is back? Speak clearly and stop going about in riddles, Valeria! Speak!” “They found Aunt Cassandra. Uncle Marcello is back, and he has captured Cassandra.” “What?!” Alexandra turned her head back so fast that it felt like her head was going to fall off her neck, “He wasn't supposed to come back until after everything was over! How did he…?” “Now that's a very good question, isn't it?” Alexandra was cut off by a very unfamiliar voice. I glanced at the person who spoke from the co
Chapter 117 Nyx's Pov “They knew that if my mother had twins, the future of the clan would be secured. The elders would never challenge her reign if there were two heirs ready to take over. But if something were to happen to us…”I exhaled sharply, “Then the succession would be thrown into chaos.”“Exactly.” Cassandra folded her arms, “My uncles, desperate for power, came up with a plan. They wanted to eliminate one of us to weaken my mother’s claim. But something went wrong. My mother found out about the plot but at that moment, due to my father taking control, my mother didn't have enough power so she announced to the clan that only one of us had survived birth. And that ‘one’ was me.”I blinked, “Wait, hold on. She just… hid you?”Cassandra’s lips pressed into a thin line, “I was raised in secret. Hidden away, protected, but also erased. My mother believed that if the clan thought I was dead, my uncles would stop their attempts to kill me. For years, I was a ghost, existing in th
