Chapter 2

作者: The Evil Villain
Ellie's scream hurt my eardrums. Even Mom, who was partially deaf, turned to look at me with a worried expression.

I forced down my anger, stepped outside, and lowered my voice. "What the fuck are you yelling at me for?"

There was a brief silence on the other end, then Ellie snapped back, "I know you're upset because I bailed on you, but I already promised I'd make time to go back with you later. What are you throwing a fit for?

"You're doing Jaiden's surgery whether you like it or not. If you don't, then we're done."

Fine by me. I didn't want to be with her anymore anyway.

Just as I was about to bring up divorce, I heard Jaiden shouting in the background. "Ellie, the party's about to start. Dad's asking for you to come to the table."

I heard her cover the phone, then respond in an unnervingly sweet tone, "I'm handling some hospital stuff. I'll be there soon. Tell Dad I'll be right there."

I couldn't help but laugh. "Oh, Dr. Harper, you have another dad now, huh? You've been on the phone with me this long. Aren't you afraid of keeping your dad waiting? Oh, right. I forgot. I'm petty."

Jaiden seemed close by. Ellie's voice dropped as she growled, "Jaiden's village is small, and the people love to gossip. I'm his boss. What's wrong with showing up to make him look good? Is there any need for this sarcastic attitude?

"Listen up, Vance. I'm giving you three days to get that surgery done. If you don't, you can get the hell out of my hospital!"

With that, she hung up.

I stood there at the entrance of my house. As the wind brushed past me, I felt a hollow ache in my chest.

But my mind was made up. I was done being the scapegoat.

The next second, I received a call from the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital, George Hudson. Apparently, someone had reported that I performed surgery while drunk, and he wanted me to come back and handle it.

I felt like I was losing my mind.

My breath hitched. "Dr. Hudson, are you sure there isn't a mistake? This patient has congenital hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He was already at death's door when he first arrived."

But George sent me the complaint letter anyway.

My mind went blank. I didn't even get to finish dinner. I rushed back to the hospital in a panic.

Faced with George's accusing look, I requested a confrontation with the accuser. But he remained silent. He simply pulled forward a witness to identify me.

But the witness—the anesthesiologist for that surgery—happened to be Jaiden's best friend.

The realization hit me like a physical blow, and my blood boiled.

"Dr. Hudson, he's Jaiden's friend. Jaiden has a grudge against me. He could easily be framing me!"

It was a desperate, hollow defense. I had no proof.

Before I could say more, a shrill voice cut through the room. "Enough!"

Ellie stormed in. Her eyes were filled with disgust as she glared at me.

"A grudge?" she snapped. "You're the one who hates him! You're the one trying to ruin him! Vance, I thought you were just petty, but still professional. I never imagined you could be so shameless!

"Do you have any idea how serious it is to fake a malpractice claim? I can't believe you'd gamble with a patient's life. You don't deserve to be a doctor, and you certainly don't deserve to be my husband!"

I froze in place, my throat tightening as if it were being squeezed.

After what felt like an eternity, I finally managed to speak. "Ellie, do you really think I'd risk a patient's life out of jealousy?"

Ellie's chest heaved with anger, her gaze dark and unreadable. "Why not? I've seen the alcohol bottles in the fridge at home."

That single sentence sealed everything.

George handed me the termination papers, and I felt the scorn of my colleagues raining down on me.

Dazed and defeated, I finished packing up. I was just about to walk out the door when the patient's mother kicked me to the ground.

"You bastard! Why did you kill my son? Why did you drink before the surgery?"

The woman kicked me again and again while slapping me across the face.

My vision began to blur. As the woman was dragged away, I crouched on the floor, quietly gathering my scattered belongings.

And then, I heard Jaiden's voice from behind me. "Vance, you got what you deserved!"

I turned to find his smug face twisted into a half-smile. Striking the pose of a victor, he looked down at my box of belongings with a look of mock surprise.

"Oh no. Are you resigning to atone for that medical accident of yours?"

This time, Ellie didn't make a scene. She simply kneeled before Mom and Dad, bowed her head to the floor, and whispered her apologies.I wasn't entirely sure how they felt about it. Though Ellie had hurt me, she had also saved me once, and they had truly loved her like a daughter. But none of that mattered to me anymore. I had successfully joined the city's best hospital. With my track record, my career took off almost immediately.During that time, I met Mira Blackwell, a woman who truly had eyes for no one but me.We made a promise to alternate visiting each other's families during the holidays, and she never once broke that promise.Mira treated my parents with such genuine respect that they quickly grew to adore her. After just six months of dating, we walked down the aisle. When we first started seeing each other, I laid out my whole history with Ellie. Mira was furious, ready to track Ellie down and settle the score right then and there. I had to pull her into my arms and

I frowned and locked eyes with Jaiden, trying to search deep within his gaze for any trace of a different emotion."Isn't my divorce from Ellie exactly what you wanted?" I asked. His expression didn't change, but I finally caught a flicker of pure madness in his gaze."But she only wants you now, Vance. She's completely forgotten about the divorce. I had her checked. The doctors say her memory has regressed to a year ago."Suddenly, this stopped being fun. You already divorced her, yet she's still obsessing over you. Seeing that made me lose all interest. But then, I had a better idea. Wouldn't it be much more thrilling if you raised my child with her for me?"And I plan to trigger her memory every now and then, just to see if she can recall how it felt with me. After all, she did say I was a lot better in bed than you. I get it now, Vance. Sleeping with someone else's wife is way more fun than sleeping with your own!"If this had been the old me, I would have smashed his face in

I had no idea how long Ellie spent pounding on my door. Eventually, it seemed a neighbor grew tired of the noise and called the police. It was only then that the officers arrived to escort her away.I didn't bother checking the peephole. I didn't know if it was the same two officers from before.I stripped the sheet and comforter from the bed and replaced them with fresh ones. The old bedding went straight into the trash bin. That night, I slept better than I had in years. As I left home the next morning, I sent the new door code to the real estate agent. I told him he had full authority to show the place and to prioritize a quick sale over a high price. Then, I drove back to my hometown and spent two weeks living the quiet life with Mom and Dad.The house sold faster than I expected. The agent was surprisingly capable. Not only did I avoid the price cut I was prepared for, but I actually walked away with a little profit. In the meantime, I sent out a few resumes. Several top-

Ellie's outburst didn't just startle Jaiden. The two officers blinked in surprise as well. Before she could say anything else, they turned to me and asked how I wanted to handle the situation.I knew that for them, these domestic disputes were a headache. But I also knew that if I wanted to press charges, they'd have to follow through.Just as I opened my mouth, Ellie spoke first. "I'll leave."Relief washed over me. I didn't want things to get uglier. All I wanted was for Ellie to face reality and get out of my life for good. She looked up at me, her expression so vulnerable it felt like a ghost from another life. "At least let me change and pack my things before I go. Is that okay?"I froze for a split second, then shook my head to dispel those lingering thoughts."Make it fast," I replied coldly. The officers looked relieved. I thanked them for their help, and they went on their way.I stood by the open front door and waited. 30 minutes later, Ellie emerged dragging a large

Ellie and Jaiden both froze. Jaiden was actually the first to snap out of it. He snatched the divorce certificate from my hand. After confirming it was real, he fought to suppress the delight dancing in his eyes.Turning to Ellie, he angled the document toward her and scoffed. "Vance, this fake divorce certificate is surprisingly well-made! A leech like you could never survive a day without Ellie. There's no way you actually went behind her back and got a real divorce."But Ellie didn't pick up on his sarcasm. She didn't even glance at the certificate he was waving in her face. Instead, she shoved his hand aside and stepped in front of me, her eyes boring into mine."Stop playing games, Vance! I haven't even seen a divorce agreement. How could you possibly have a divorce certificate?"Looking at her stubborn disbelief, I felt a sudden urge to laugh. "Oh, you've seen the agreement. In fact, you're the one who threw it in my face."Ellie choked back whatever she was going to say,

I tried the lock three times. Suddenly, the door opened from the inside.Standing there was Jaiden, wearing my pajamas. It was the matching set Ellie and I used to wear. The moment he saw me, a smug smile spread across his face. He raised an eyebrow and taunted, "Oh, Vance. Ellie said you wouldn't be coming back, so I decided to swing by. We just finished up, but the place is a little messy. Do you want to wait outside? I'll tidy up."You really pissed her off today, huh? She took all her anger out on me. Little Jaiden almost couldn't take—"Before he could finish, I punched him right in the face.He immediately covered his nose and collapsed to the floor, groaning in pain.Ellie screamed and rushed over. Her pajamas were haphazardly thrown on, and her hair was still dripping wet."Vance! Are you crazy?" she shouted. "Why would you hit him?"I didn't answer. I just gave her a cold glance, then casually adjusted her pajamas for her.Her eyes flickered with panic, and she forgot
