PRESENT

GRAYSON'S POV:

It was a little before midnight when my phone rang. I picked it up to see Julian’s name glowing on the screen.

I was on my feet before I even picked up the call. He never called unless it was absolutely important.

“I need you here,” he said without preamble. “Now.”

“What did you find?” I asked, grabbing my jacket.

“We found the leak,” Julian said. “Or rather, we found the one who made it possible.”

GRAYSON’S POV:I woke up before Selene. I usually did. There was rarely anything she loved more than her sleep. The curtains had shifted sometime during the night, allowing a narrow ribbon of golden sunlight to slip through the gap. It spilled across her face, catching on her lashes and the gentle curve of her cheek. For a moment, I just watched her. Then I carefully slid out of bed, moving towards the window. She stirred instantly. A groan escaped her lips as she blindly reached for me.“Don’t, Vexley,” she grumbled, eyes still closed.“I’m just pulling back the curtains,” I said quietly, even as I slid back into bed.“Don’t,” she repeated. Instead, she threw her leg over my torso and burrowed her face in my chest.I smiled to myself and pressed a kiss to her temple, brushing a strand of hair away from her eyes.“Is she here?” She asked, voice muffled against my chest.“Is who here?”I could practically feel her rolling her eyes. My smile widened.“The baby, Vexley,” she muttered. “

PRESENTSELENE’S POV:I drove without a destination in mind. The sun was setting, painting the sky in gorgeous streaks of pink and gold. The city felt unreal, a kind of whimsical charm that settled within me like a warm blanket on a winter night. For the first time in days, my mind wasn’t split into a hundred directions. It was quiet, like someone had reached into the chaos in my chest and forced everything into place.Hearing Corey—someone so distant from our past, so detached from everything Grayson and I had been—say the words out loud had done something strange to me.Maybe it made me accept the truth I was running from all this time. But despite the clarity, I felt this bone deep fear within me.Loving Grayson Vexley had never been gentle. It wasn’t soft or safe or steady. It was sharp and consuming, the kind of love that sank into your bones and rewrote you without asking permission. I always knew that, knew the dangers of it and I jumped in willingly over and over again. And e

PRESENTSELENE’S POV:I slid the brown envelope across the table toward Corey and waited. It took him less than a minute to understand.“Judging from your expression,” he said lightly, leaning back against the sofa as if nothing about this actually scared him, “Grayson Vexley finally uncovered the truth and didn’t hesitate to pass it on to you. Am I correct?”“Grayson Vexley is hardly the topic of this conversation,” I said calmly.I found the envelope this morning, outside the hotel room Maya and I were staying at and even though neither of us ever told Grayson where we were staying, he somehow found out.Only my name was written on the front, but I recognized the handwriting instantly. The same elegant, cursive from back in school, the kind of perfect you would expect from somelike Grayson Vexley. And inside was the truth was Corey Allister, the man who told me—not two days before—he liked me.“Then what is the topic of this conversation, Miss Hale?” He asked.Back to formalities, i

Except for the mess of files spread out all on the table, the room looked immaculate. The folders were arranged in precise stacks—printed, annotated, tagged with strips of yellow like evidence laid out at a crime scene.Julian turned away from the window the moment I entered. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, his hair mussed like he’d run his hands through it one too many times. He looked worn.“Who is it?” I asked.“Barbara McCasey,” he said, sliding a stack of folders towards me.The name hit me li

PRESENTSELENE’S POV:The knock startled me.I put down the book I was trying to read–still stuck on the same line for the last fifteen minutes as I opened the door of the guest room.Corey stood there, in a loose white tee shirt and worn out pants. My gaze lingered on the bandage on his lower lip and my stomach churned.“Hi,” I said, surprised to see him here. “You’re not going to work?”“No,” he replied. “I thought I would stay back today.”I nodded, my throat too tight. “Okay.”“Can we talk?” he asked suddenly and my stomach dropped. I was dreading this moment.I nodded anyways, walking into the living room.I sat down on the L-shaped couch with him on the opposite side.I folded my hands in my lap, bracing myself. I knew this conversation was coming. We both pretended yesterday never happened but it wasn’t something that could be ignored for long.Corey was the one who spoke first.“I know you lied,” he said calmly. He could've been talking about any of the million lies I told hi

PRESENTGRAYSON'S POV:The closer I got to Corey's place, the more the annoyance built in my chest. It wasn't the smartest decision but I was way past smart these days.Since the night Selene left, everything else had blurred into insignificance. Work, logic, restraint—none of it mattered. The only thing I could think about was finding her, because every second she wasn’t in front of me felt like losing her all over again. And as if that weren’t enough, Corey chose this moment to stir up chaos with a lawsuit that technically wasn’t even my responsibility anymore. But it was putting Julian in a harder position and not to mention–Corey and I were due for a chat a long while now.I parked outside the building I knew was his and stepped into the elevator to the penthouses.By the time the doors slid open, my patience was already worn thin. The hallway was wide and silent, with only one door at the end.I pounded on it until some of the frustration burned out of my system and I heard a fem

PAST SELENE’S POV:Zoey picked up my call on the second ring. My world could be falling apart but I knew I could always count on her to always be meticulously consistent.“Oh, my God, finally!” Zoey exclaimed, her face popping onto my screen. Her dark almond eyes shone with mischief, her dark hair
