That same night, the grey group limited building stood the way it always did at night, tall and certain above the rest of the city, its glass exterior catching the lights of New York below like it owned every reflection.

At the top floor, Lucien Grey sat behind his desk in the kind of quiet that only exists when everyone else has gone home. The office was large and deliberately sparse, nothing on the walls that didn't serve a purpose, nothing on the desk that wasn't being used. He was going through documents, his eyes moving steadily across each page, his expression giving nothing away. This was where he was most himself. Not at dinners or social events or in rooms full of people performing their importance at each other. Here, alone with numbers and decisions and the clean logic of business, everything made sense.

The office door opened.

Caleb Stone walked in.

Lucien didn't look up. He could tell from the sound of Caleb's footsteps, the particular way they slowed just inside the door, that whatever he was about to say was not straightforward. Caleb was not a man who hesitated. In three years of working together, Lucien had learned to read him the way you read weather. When Caleb paused, something uncomfortable was coming.

"The marriage contract has been completed, but—" Caleb stopped.

Just like that. Mid-sentence. The word hanging in the air between them was something that needed to be handled carefully before it was set down.

Lucien let two full seconds pass before he responded. He still didn't look up from the papers in his hand.

"But?" he asked

Caleb gave a quiet sigh. Not dramatic. Just the small, controlled exhale of a man preparing to deliver news he already knows will not be received well.

"It's no longer Amelia, the second daughter."

Lucien's hand slowed slightly on the page but he said nothing. Caleb continued before the silence could expand.

"It's Chloe. Their first daughter."

Lucien stopped.

Not visibly, not in a way that anyone across a room would notice. But his eyes lifted from the document and focused on nothing in particular, settling somewhere in the middle distance while his mind moved quickly through what he had just heard. He set the papers down slowly and leaned back in his chair.

He had agreed to this marriage for one reason. His father had mentioned the family and been specific about the daughter, and that specificity had been the only thing that made Lucien say yes without resistance. He had agreed to marry Amelia Carter. That was the arrangement. That was what he had accepted.

"What the hell happened then?" he asked himself, the question forming and dissolving privately before he decided what to say out loud.

"Do you know the reason why they changed the daughter?" he finally said, his voice calm, measured, the voice he used when he was thinking more than speaking.

"I didn't ask why," Caleb replied.

Lucien was quiet for a moment. Then a slow smirk crossed his face, the kind that didn't carry any warmth in it.

"Then she would know what it means to marry into a mistake," he said.

He leaned back further in his chair and looked at the ceiling briefly, the smirk fading back into stillness.

"You can go," he told Caleb.

Caleb left without pushing further, and Lucien could tell from the pace of his exit that he was relieved the conversation had gone as quietly as it did. Lucien almost found that amusing.

He sat alone in the office after the door closed and let his mind go to the place it had been circling for months.

Amelia Carter.

He had seen her only once. At a private event. He hadn't been paying particular attention to anyone. He rarely did at those things. But something had caught his eye across the room. A woman. Young, composed, wearing something simple in a room full of people trying too hard. And around her neck, a necklace.

He had seen that necklace before.

Not on her but on someone else. A memory so old and worn from handling that he couldn't always trust its edges anymore, but the feeling that came with it was always precise. The specific feeling of being believed in by someone during a period of his life when he had given the world very little reason to believe in him.

He hadn't been able to cross the room to speak to her that night. Something had pulled him away before he could get close enough. But he had kept her face in his mind afterward, turning it over quietly, wondering.

Then his father had come home a few nights ago and sat across from him with the particular expression he wore when a decision had already been made and the conversation was merely a formality.

"I already have someone in mind that you should marry," his father had said.

Lucien had put down whatever he was holding. "I don't want to marry any random person, Father. I told you I have someone in mind."

"Then do that quickly, unless you'll lose your post," his father replied without flinching. "The board members are already asking when. But if you don't find that person in a day, then you'll have to marry her."

His father had slid a photograph across the table.

Lucien had looked down at it and gone very still.

Amelia Carter.

The same face. The same necklace, visible even in the photograph, resting at her collarbone.

"She's from the Carter family," his father continued, "a well known and prestigious family. The problem is they're in bankruptcy and he asked for my help, so why not help each other?"

Lucien had stared at the photograph for a long moment, something moving through his chest that he hadn't felt in years. He wasn't a man who believed in coincidence. He was a man who believed in patterns, in cause and consequence, in the way the world occasionally arranged itself into something that looked almost like intention.

"This is fate," he had thought, the words forming somewhere beneath logic, somewhere he didn't usually allow things to form.

"I'll marry her," he had said immediately.

That response had surprised his father visibly. Alexander Grey was not a man who showed surprise often, but something shifted briefly in his expression before he smoothed it back into composure. "Ok, then I'll reach out to them," he had said, and that was that.

Lucien had walked away from that conversation feeling something he hadn't expected to feel about a business arrangement. Certainty. The quiet, settled feeling of a man who believes he is finally moving in the right direction.

And now this.

He sat in his office and turned the information over. Chloe. The elder daughter. A stranger whose name he hadn't heard before tonight, whose face he couldn't picture, who had nothing to do with any of it as far as he was concerned. The Carter family had agreed to terms and then changed them quietly, substituting one daughter for another as though the arrangement were a business order that could be modified after confirmation.

He reached down and opened a locked drawer in his desk.

Inside was a photograph, old enough that the edges had softened, handled enough times that it had taken on a particular quality, the quality of something returned to repeatedly over years. He picked it up and held it, looking at it in the low light of the office.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"It should be Amelia marrying me and not a stranger," he said to himself quietly.

The city spread out below the window behind him, indifferent and enormous and fully lit, the way New York always was at this hour. He sat with the photograph in his hand for a long moment, alone in the silence he had built around himself, and felt the particular frustration of a man who had come very close to something he had been looking for and then had it moved just out of reach at the last possible moment.

He placed the photograph back in the drawer, and closed it.

During the dinner, Chloe felt invisible. The long dining table was filled with expensive dishes, polished silverware, and elegant laughter, yet none of it made her feel like she belonged. The conversation flowed naturally around the table, but somehow it always managed to pass over her.Richard and Lucien's father discussed business investments and upcoming projects. Evelyn happily joined Catherine in talking about luxury brands, social events, and influential families. Every topic seemed to revolve around wealth, status, and power.Even Lucien didn't utter a single word to Chloe. He sat beside her, yet it felt like they were worlds apart. His attention remained on his father as they spoke about business, his calm voice filling the room every now and then. Not once did he turn to ask Chloe if she was enjoying the meal or include her in the conversation.Amelia noticed everything.Every glance.Every silence.Whenever Catherine or Evelyn praised her, she accepted the compliments with a

“We're being invited to the Grey's family mansion for dinner,” Evelyn said excitedly as she informed her husband and daughter. There was obvious excitement in her voice, the kind that came whenever the Grey family was involved.“Just us?” Amelia asked, stopping halfway as she was about to chew a piece of fruit. She lowered it slowly, now paying full attention to what her mother was saying.“I'm sure she didn't invite Chloe,” she added with a smirk.“Actually it's a family dinner where everyone is invited, so Chloe would be coming with her husband,” Evelyn responded, not really caring whether Chloe was invited or not.“Oh, whatever. Then I'd finally get to ask how my dearest stepsister is doing,” Amelia laughed softly, her sarcasm impossible to miss.Evelyn turned to her husband with a curious look.“By the way, how is Chloe doing?”Before Richard could respond, Amelia spoke again.“I'm sure she's doing great now that she's married into a rich family,” she said, rolling her eyes.“Yeah

Lucien's phone buzzed on his desk in his office. He glanced at the screen, and saw his mother's name on it ‘why was she calling?’ he thought. He picked up."I want to have lunch with your wife," Catherine said on the other side of the phone before he could speak.Lucien leaned back in his chair. "Why?""Can't I have lunch with my daughter-in-law?"A pause. "I'll let her know."He ended the call and called his butler."Tell Mrs. Grey that my mother is expecting her at the Grey mansion for lunch. A driver will take her.""Yes sir."Chloe was by the window reading a book when the butler knocked on her door, “who is it?” She asked not looking away from the book she was reading. “It's me ma'am, Mr Grey told me to inform you that his mother wants to have lunch with you at the Grey's mansion.”She listened to the message, and wondered why his mother wants to see her. She pushed the thought and went to get ready. She didn't rush. She dressed simply, kept her makeup light, and clipped her moth

  • From substitute bride to CEO    Chapter 8: On paper only

Lucien sat in his room, staring at nothing in particular. He hadn't slept again after he left her room. He'd come back here, sat on the edge of his bed, and stayed there. What was he thinking? That was the question that kept circling back, refusing to leave him alone. What exactly had he been thinking when he walked into her room last night? He'd been drunk, yes. But drunk men don't just wander into rooms. They go somewhere they want to go, even if they won't admit it the next morning. He pressed two fingers to his temple. He had called her Amelia. He said the name out loud in his head and felt something cold move through his chest. He hadn't even realized it until this morning when the fog of alcohol had lifted and the night had replayed itself in fragments. Her face. Her silence. The way she had stopped fighting at some point, not because she wanted to, but because she had no choice. And then he remembered. The sheets. He had seen it before he left. A faint blood stain on the white

Later that night Lucien who was still in the bar was already drunk.“That’s enough,” Caleb said as he took the wine glass from Lucien just as he was about to gulp another liquor down his throat.“Give me that,” Lucien said unsteadily, trying to grab the glass back, but instead he staggered slightly on his feet.“You’re drunk Lucien, and you need to go home before you’re shown on the news tomorrow,” Caleb told him firmly.“I don’t want to go back to where that woman is,” Lucien said, shaking his head as frustration and irritation mixed in his voice.“Then do you want to ruin your reputation and be on the headlines tomorrow?” Caleb asked him back.Lucien didn’t respond. That silence was enough answer for Caleb. He sighed and stepped closer, lifting Lucien slightly so he could lean on him.“Damn you’re heavy,” Caleb muttered as he helped him out of the bar.“Just shut up Caleb,” Lucien replied weakly.“My car is parked at the back, and don’t worry my driver is here,” Lucien added.Caleb

The drive to Lucien's penthouse was quiet. The silence inside the car felt uncomfortable, stretching endlessly between them. Chloe sat with her hands clasped tightly together on her lap, trying not to look nervous. Every now and then, she stole a glance at the man sitting beside her.Her husband.Just a few hours ago, she had been Chloe Carter. Now she was Chloe Grey.Yet the man she was married to looked as though he couldn't wait to get away from her.Lucien sat with his gaze fixed ahead, his expression unreadable. Not once since they left the courthouse had he looked at her. It was almost as if she wasn't there.Chloe swallowed hard and turned toward the window. The air inside the car suddenly felt heavy. She wanted nothing more than to lower the window and breathe.Slowly, she reached toward it."Don't touch anything."The cold voice broke the silence.Chloe immediately froze.Lucien wasn't even looking at her when he spoke. His eyes remained fixed ahead as though he was speaking
