Chapter 4

Author: Caramel Pudding
My fingers quivered, and I decided to stop scrolling, and I flung the phone to the side. It was not long before I heard Jacob speaking on the phone in the living room. His speaker was turned on, and I could hear the voice of our class teacher.

"Jacob, I heard about your score estimate. It's incredible! Once the results are announced, I'll help you apply for the school's special scholarship and write you a letter of recommendation to Kale University. You're the pride of our school!"

Jacob replied with great relish, and even after he hung up, his voice went an octave higher as he shouted toward my room, "Mom! Dad! Our class teacher says he'll be writing me a letter of recommendation to Kale University!"

My father laughed so loudly that it hurt my ears. I sat in front of my desk, staring at the computer to search for the exam answers shared online, and I started to compare them one by one to get an estimate of my score.

I had most of the answers right, as there were subjective answers in essays that might not hit the right note with examiners, but after using the strictest standard to take off possible points, my score was estimated at 1,560, 60 points higher than the minimum requirement for Kale University.

I took out a folder from the innermost section of my drawer that I had locked up for six months, containing all the exam papers and drafts I used in twenty major school exams in the past year.

My answers matched Jacob's 100% for all of them, but I had drafts that were filled with my draft calculations, and I took pictures of each of them and saved them in folders. They were evidence that I filed according to the dates, and I saved them in double-encrypted folders. Once our results were announced, these would become hard evidence against Jacob.

After an entire afternoon of work, I started to get thirsty, so I headed downstairs to buy myself a cold drink. When I returned to my room, I found all my revision papers on the table, and the certificates I won in competitions that were on the wall had all been torn to shreds. I trembled with anger at the sight.

"Oh, you're back, Jonah." I looked up to see Jacob chewing gum while leaning against my door. He shrugged and smiled innocently. "I was in your room looking for something and thought these useless pieces of paper were taking up too much space. You won't be able to attend Kale University anyway, and all these papers and certificates would just be rubbish. So, I threw them away for you. No need to thank me."

[Good job tearing them up to shreds. Those lousy certificates were supposed to belong to Jacob anyway.]

[Why would Jonah hide those papers?]

[Hiding them was pointless. It's a fact that he can't get into Kale University.]

On the day the results were announced, I was still picking up the torn-up certificates in my room, but my father kept pushing me to check my score. When I walked out of the room, a laptop was sitting open with the College Board Student Score Reports page staring back at me.

Jacob was leaning against the couch while sending a voice note to his friends. "The results will be announced soon. I have no problem scoring 1,550. Once it's official, I'll buy all of you a big meal."

When Jacob saw me out of the room, he raised an eyebrow and said louder, "By the way, shouldn't you apologize to me for copying my answers so many times once the results are out, Jonah?"

My father frowned and glared at me. "What are you standing there for? You should be learning from your younger brother. You can still get a job after finishing community college. Stop being a slacker at home."

Jacob smiled as he went to the laptop to enter his username and password into the website gleefully. When he clicked on the submit button, he turned to glance at me with a taunting look in his eye. Everyone held their breath during the three seconds the page was loading, and when the results appeared, Jacob's scream almost blew the roof off.

"No! That's impossible!"

That was when the tablet of one of the reporters nearby suddenly popped up with a glaring headline: [Valedictorian's parents fail to extort son of his money, family of three ends up in a fight.]I swept a glance at the tablet's screen, which happened to play a clip of my father slapping Jacob, who fell to the ground, yelling, "You're both so useless! You can't even get 200,000 dollars from him!"My mother grabbed Jacob and started cursing at him, "How dare you say something like that when you're so useless? If you weren't so dumb, we wouldn't end up being humiliated here!" All three of them started fighting each other at the train station, and the crowd started taking pictures and recording videos of them. The comments under the post scrolled up speedily as everyone commented angrily about this family of leeches. The comments that took Jacob's side were buried under their angry replies.[Hahahaha! They turned on each other!]The reporters who watched the clip coughed to hide thei

On the day of my departure, I woke up early, leaving with my backpack and luggage. When I arrived at the train station, I found my parents and Jacob waiting at the ticket checkpoint with a sign that read: [Jonah Scott turned his back against his family.] They attracted a crowd who were taking pictures of them. When my family spotted me, my mother dashed toward me with a roar and grabbed my luggage handle to stop me from leaving. "If you don't transfer 200,000 dollars to my account right now, I won't let you leave this station. We took care of you for 18 years, and we're making it easy on you by asking for this little amount of money. If you dare leave, we'll take this protest to your university gates! We'll make everyone know about what a terrible person you are!"Jacob chimed in with a loud voice and played the victim, "What is 200,000 dollars to you when you have a scholarship worth more than a million in total, Jacob? Can you really bear to see me lose my chance at getting int

The television showed Jacob hiding under my table and tearing up my competition certificates locked in my drawer while cursing at me, "What's the point of that jerk winning so many certificates? He'll just end up being my stepping stone in the end. These are all mine!"Everything was captured clearly, even the crisp sound of his tearing. "Oh, I have this too."I clicked on an audio recording taken on the day when the results were released and my father had forced me to let Jacob take my place as valedictorian. There was also the recording from two days ago, when he wanted me to hand over the 15,000 dollars to Jacob for him to retake his exams, which echoed clearly throughout the living room."This is about your brother's future. It's only right that you give us that 200,000."Before they realized what was happening, I immediately shared the video and audio recordings with the family's group chat with only one accompanying statement: [From today on, I, Jonah Scott, will be cutting

"How dare he make trouble here? Isn't he ashamed of what he did?"A student took out his phone to project the video I posted yesterday onto the hall's big screen. It showed the footage of Jacob knocking over his cereal and placing the blame on me. I had merged it with the video of him crying and maligning me outside the exam hall, which everyone could see clearly."There's also this!"Another student stood up with his phone to project the group chat history onto the screen. It was a text from Jacob last year. [What's the point of studying? Jonah can study hard all he can, but his answers will still be mine in the end. I sleep in class all the time, and I'm the class's top ten scorers. Jonah gives me free answering services during exams.]The chat history of him bragging to his buddies about his special abilities that could hear anything I was thinking was also exposed. This revelation caused a commotion among the audience, and everyone started taking pictures of the stage. The

"I'm using the scholarship for my tuition fees at university. As for that special placement you asked for, I'm not in any position to request something like that. If you want him to go to university, figure out a way for him yourselves."With that, I turned to smile at Mr. Cartman from Kale University. "I've decided to accept the offer for the computer science course at Kale University."Mr. Cartman smiled and gave me the pre-admission letter from the university. "Great. We were waiting for you to say yes. We'll mail you the official admission letter within a week.'The admissions officer from Stonewall University looked disappointed, but he got my contact number and told me to get in touch if I changed my mind at any time before leaving dejectedly. Mr. Cartman talked to me about several items to pay attention to before leaving for the university, and left after that. My parents tried to talk to him again about helping Jacob, but he rejected them with a smile. After sending off M

The second announcement was: [We condemn Jacob Scott for cheating in the school exams on multiple occasions and will hand him over to the education board for disciplinary actions.]It was followed by a bunch of people tagging me in texts. A member of the student council who used to criticize me often in public apologized to me three times in text, claiming that he had been blinded enough to jump on the bandwagon to berate me. He even offered me 100 dollars as compensation for what he did.The rest of my classmates were either busy expressing their surprise or heaping praises on me as the next valedictorian. Several classmates who were convinced I had been cheating deleted all past posts criticizing me, and they proceeded to text me privately to apologize for what they did. After I was done reading the texts, my doorbell rang. It was my class teacher who had arrived with a fruit basket and a box of my favorite strawberry cake. He stood outside awkwardly, and his forehead was covered
