Chapter 5: Secret

last update publish date: 2026-04-26 21:04:15

We drove for hours. Cole's jaw was tight, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Every few minutes he'd check the mirrors, check his phone, check me like he was making sure I was still there.

When he finally pulled over at a small motel in the middle of nowhere, the sun was coming up. He got us a room under a fake name. Cash. No ID needed.

Inside, he locked the door and pulled out his phone. I watched his face as he listened to Marcus. His expression shifted from hard to something darker. Angrier.

He hung up. "Your father's involved in campaign finance fraud. Embezzlement. Money laundering. Names that go high up. Really high up. When he tried to back out, they decided to use you. To keep him in line."

I couldn't breathe. "So they want me dead?"

"They want to keep him compliant. Either works."

I walked to the window. Looked out at the empty parking lot.

"How high up?" I whispered.

"Higher than we thought."

My phone had been off since we left the safe house. I turned it on. Forty-seven missed calls. Thirty-two text messages. One voicemail made my blood run cold.

My father's voice came through, shaking. "Son, I'm sorry. For everything. For dragging you into this. For being a coward. I made deals with the wrong people. I thought I could control it. I was wrong."

A gunshot. Then the line went dead.

Cole took the phone from my hand. His face went stone cold.

"We need to move. Now."

He grabbed a bag that was already packed. He'd known this was coming.

Cole pulled me close. "Whatever happens next. Whatever comes. I meant what I said. You're not a mistake. And I'm not losing you."

I kissed him hard and desperate.

"Don't say goodbye," I whispered.

"I'm not. But be ready. The next few days are going to be dangerous."

His phone vibrated. A text from an unknown number.

Cole read it and his face went blank.

"What?" I asked.

He showed me the phone. One sentence.

"Your bodyguard's been made. Where are you?"

We ran to the car. Cole drove fast, checking mirrors constantly. After two hours, he pulled off the main road onto a smaller highway. Trees on both sides. No towns.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Somewhere safe."

My phone buzzed. An email from Marcus.

Cole glanced over. "Don't open it."

But I already had.

There was no message. Just a photo. My father. Bound to a chair in a warehouse. And standing next to him, phone to his ear, was Marcus.

Smiling.

Cole saw it at the same time. His hands gripped the steering wheel like it might break.

"Marcus," I whispered.

"He set us up. The entire time."

Cole's phone rang. He answered. "Marcus."

I could hear Marcus's voice. Calm. Like he was talking about the weather.

"Cole. You should've stayed out of it."

"Where's the senator?"

"Safe. For now. Depends on whether you cooperate."

"What do you want?"

"Bring Ashton to the warehouse. Corner of Fifth and Industrial. You know it?"

"Yeah. I know it."

"Come alone. No cops. No backup. Or your girlfriend's father dies. Slowly."

The line went dead.

Cole's hands were shaking. I'd never seen him lose control like that.

"We're going," I said.

"No. We're not. We're getting backup. We're going to end this."

"My father will be dead by then."

"Your father's already dead unless he needs leverage. Which means he needs us. Which means we have time."

My phone buzzed. Another email. A video.

My father. Beaten. Bleeding. Tied to that chair.

"Son, do what they ask. Don't be brave. Just do what they ask and maybe you live."

The video cut out.

"Cole, we have to go."

"We're not walking into that trap."

But even as he said it, he was already turning the car around. Heading back toward the city. Toward the warehouse. Toward Marcus.

"Why would he do this?" I asked. "He's been your friend for years."

"Because money. Because power. Because people like Marcus only care about themselves."

We drove in silence. The city lights getting closer.

After an hour, Cole pulled over on a dark street a few blocks from the warehouse. He turned to me.

"When we get there, you stay behind me. You do exactly what I say."

"Yeah."

"If this goes bad, you run. You don't stop. You don't look back."

He checked his gun. Then he pulled out his phone and texted someone. "It's done. I'm going in."

The response came back instantly. "We've got your six. Good luck."

Cole looked at me. For the first time since we'd met, I saw the soldier. The man who'd lost everything. The man who had nothing left to lose.

"Let's go get your father," he said.

We got out of the car. The warehouse loomed ahead, dark and silent. Cole's hand found mine and held tight.

As we walked toward the entrance, toward Marcus, toward whatever came next, I realized something.

Cole wasn't scared anymore. Cole was something else entirely now.

Cole was ready to burn the world down.

And Marcus had no idea what was walking toward him.

Cole didn't move for a full thirty seconds."Harlan is dead," Cole said."No. He's not.""I watched him die. Prague. The ambush that killed my team." His voice was completely flat. The flatness that came after something hit too hard for a normal reaction. "I pulled him out of a burning vehicle. He didn't make it to the hospital.""He didn't make it to the hospital you were taken to," Sixteen said. "Different vehicle. Different hospital. Different name on the intake form." She slid her phone across the table. A photo on the screen. "He's been Victor Crane for four years. Private security consulting. Offices in Geneva and Washington."Cole looked at the photo for a long time.I looked at Cole."He set up the ambush," Cole said."He sold the operation to the same network that owns your senator's case. Has been running money through defense contracts for eleven years." Sixteen took her phone back. "Your team died because they were getting close to the financial trail. Harlan decided it

Cole read the message three times.I watched his face cycle through suspicion, calculation, and something that looked almost like recognition before it locked down again into neutral."You know who it is," I said."Maybe."Cole."He sat up and ran a hand through his hair. "There was someone. Before Marcus. Before any of this. A contact I used when I was still active military. Someone who moved in the same circles as the people behind your father's case." He looked at the phone. "I haven't heard from them in four years.""Man or woman?"Never met them in person. Everything was encrypted drops and burner numbers." He stood and pulled on his jeans. "They called themselves Sixteen.""That's not a name.""No. It's not." He looked at the message again. "But they saved my life once. Operation that went sideways in Prague. Everyone else on my team walked into an ambush. I got a warning forty minutes before. Anonymous. Never explained.""And you think this is them.""I think it might be." H

My father's silence lasted three seconds too long.Cole stepped closer. Not threatening. Worse than that. Calm."Senator. Who did you call?""Someone who can help us." My father's voice was steady but his hands weren't. "Someone inside the investigation who's been protecting me from the beginning."A name.""Agent Reeves. Dana Reeves. She's been my contact for six months. She's the one who pushed me to cooperate in the first place."Cole didn't move. "Dana Reeves is the leak."The color drained from my father's face."She's been feeding your location to Marcus's employers since the beginning," Cole said. "Marcus told me before he died. He didn't know her name but he described her. Female handler. Six months in. Pushed the senator hard to cooperate so they'd know exactly what evidence existed and who had it."My father stood. Sat back down. His hands pressed flat to his knees."The drive," I said. "If she knows about the drive""She knows." Cole was already moving. Bag up, gun chec

Cole was dressed before I reached for my shirt. He moved fast, pulling on his jeans and checking his gun in one motion, already at the window with two fingers on the curtain edge before I had my shoes on. He looked out without moving the curtain. A narrow gap. Enough."How many?" I asked."One car. Black sedan. Parked facing the exit." He let the curtain fall. "They're not here to grab us. If they were, they'd have come through the door already.""Then what do they want?""To let us know they can find us anywhere." He turned from the window and looked at me. "It's a message. They want us scared and running.""Is it working?""On you or me?"Either."Cole holstered his gun and picked up his phone. He typed a fast text and waited. The response came back in under a minute. He read it and his expression didn't change but something behind his eyes did."Marcus had a partner," he said. "Someone inside the federal investigation. Someone who's been feeding our location since day one.""Since

He handed me the phone without a word. The text was three sentences."Marcus is dead"Shot in the warehouse after you left. Whoever sent the second team they're not done. They want the senator. And they know about you. Both of you.Cole had the door locked, the curtain drawn, and his shirt off before I could say a word. The graze on his side was worse than he'd let on. Dark and raw, the skin already purpling at the edges, blood dried in a thick line from his ribs to his hip."You said it was manageable," I said."It is.""Cole, that needs stitches.""It needs a cloth and some pressure. Sit down."He went to the bathroom and came back with a wet towel and a first aid kit from his bag. He sat across from me on the edge of the bed and pressed the cloth to his own side like it was nothing. Like he hadn't taken a bullet two hours ago protecting me and my father.I crossed the room, took the cloth from his hand, and held it myself. He let me.That was how I knew how tired he was. The door was open. That was the first wrong thing.Cole stopped me with a hand across my chest. He scanned the entrance. Dark inside. No guards posted. No sound."He wants us to walk in," Cole said."So we walk in.""That's the trap.""I know, just walk in anyway."Under it sat my father. His face was swollen. Blood dried at his temple. Both wrists zip-tied to the arms of a metal chair. His eyes found me and he shook his head. Mouthed something I couldn't read."Ashton." Marcus's voice from somewhere above us. The mezzanine level. "Right on time."Cole moved me behind a crate without breaking stride."You look good, Cole," Marcus called down. "Considering you just drove through three of my checkpoints.""I didn't see any checkpoints.""That's the point."A pause. Footsteps above us. Moving slow."Send the senator out," Cole said. "We take him and leave. You walk away clean."Marcus laughed. Not the laugh I remembered from the phone, easy and professional. This one had edges. "You thi
