Chapter 4: Breaking point

last update تاريخ النشر: 2026-04-26 21:03:35

I didn't sleep.

Cole was on the couch. Every few hours I heard him moving, checking windows, checking his phone. Around three in the morning, I gave up trying. I came out and found him sitting in the dark with his laptop open, files spread across the coffee table.

"Can't sleep?" he asked without looking up.

"No."

"Sit."

I sat on the other end of the couch. Close enough to feel the pull of him.

Cole turned the laptop toward me. Files on Senator Irwin's connections. The money trails. The people with everything to lose.

"How many people know your father's cooperating?" I asked.

"Maybe five."

"Then they'll kill him."

Cole looked at me. "Probably."

No comfort. Just truth. And in this moment, that was all we had.

"We could die here," I said. "Any night."

"I won't let that happen."

"You can't promise that."

"No. But I won't stop trying."

I moved closer. Just an inch.

"Then stop fighting this," I said. "Stop fighting me."

Cole turned to look at me. Even in the dark, I could see his eyes. Dark and conflicted and wanting something he thought he couldn't have.

"If I stop fighting, I stop being your bodyguard."

"That's not true. You can do both."

"No. I can't. Because if I touch you right now, I won't be able to stop."

"So we die safe but apart? That's not living, Cole. That's just dying slower."

He stood up. Walked to the window. Looked out at the dark woods.

"You don't know what you're asking for," he said.

"Yes, I do. I'm asking you to stop pretending you don't feel this."

Cole turned around. Even across the room, I could feel the fight happening inside him.

"This is insane," he said.

"I know."

"This is the worst possible idea."

"I know."

"If the senator finds out—"

"He won't. Not yet. Right now it's just us."

He walked back and stood over me. His hands clenched into fists.

"If we do this," he said, "there's no going back."

"Yeah. I understand."

He pulled me up and kissed me. Slow and deep and certain. His tongue against mine. His hands in my hair. When we broke apart, we were both breathing hard.

"Bedroom," he said.

We made it there in pieces. Half-clothed by the time we got through the door. His hands everywhere, like he was memorizing me. Like he thought this might be the only time.

"It won't be," I said against his mouth.

"Won't be what?"

"The only time. I'm not going anywhere."

Cole pulled back and looked at me. Like he was trying to believe it. Then he kissed me again.

We were tangled together when the first gunshot rang out.

Glass exploded. Cole's body covered mine instantly.

"Stay down!"

More shots. Windows shattering. Bullets hitting walls.

Cole grabbed his gun and pulled on his jeans. "Lock this door. Anyone comes through that isn't me, you run."

He kissed me. Fast and hard. Then he was gone.

I heard gunfire. Yelling. Something heavy hitting the floor. Then silence.

"Cole?" Nothing. "COLE!"

Footsteps. Heavy. Fast. Not Cole's rhythm. The door handle turned. I grabbed the lamp.

The door opened. A man stood there. Tall. Masked. Gun pointed at me.

"Where is he?" The voice was rough. "The bodyguard. Where did he go?"

My mind raced. Cole was somewhere in this house. Alive or dead, I didn't know.

"He ran when you started shooting."

The man laughed. "No he didn't. Men like that don't run."

He stepped into the room. I swung the lamp. He caught my wrist and twisted. Pain shot up my arm. The lamp clattered to the floor.

"Your father should've paid," he said. "Should've stayed out of things that didn't concern him."

"My father?"

"This isn't about you, kid. This is about keeping people in line."

He raised his gun. A shot rang out.

The man dropped. Blood blooming across his chest. Cole stood in the doorway. Gun raised. Face hard.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

I nodded but couldn't speak.

Cole checked the body, then grabbed my hand. "Get dressed. Now. We're leaving."

I pulled on clothes with shaking hands. Cole was already moving. Another body near the living room. He'd taken out at least two.

"How many?" I asked.

"Don't know. Could be more outside."

We ran to the SUV. Cole started the engine just as a bullet hit the windshield. Spider web cracks spread but it didn't shatter.

"Bulletproof glass," he said. "Hold on."

He floored it. We flew down the dirt road. More shots behind us but getting farther away. Cole drove like his life depended on it.

One hand on the wheel. One hand on his phone.

"Marcus. Safe house is compromised. We're mobile. I need a new location."

He hung up and looked at me. "You're bleeding."

I looked down. Blood on my arm where the man had twisted my wrist.

"It's nothing."

"It's not nothing."

We drove in silence. My arm throbbing. My whole body shaking from shock.

Cole reached over and took my hand. Held it tight.

"Whatever this is," he said, keeping his eyes on the road, "we figure it out. Together."

I squeezed his hand back. But I couldn't shake the feeling that everything was about to get so much worse.

He handed me the phone without a word. The text was three sentences."Marcus is dead"Shot in the warehouse after you left. Whoever sent the second team they're not done. They want the senator. And they know about you. Both of you.Cole had the door locked, the curtain drawn, and his shirt off before I could say a word. The graze on his side was worse than he'd let on. Dark and raw, the skin already purpling at the edges, blood dried in a thick line from his ribs to his hip."You said it was manageable," I said."It is.""Cole, that needs stitches.""It needs a cloth and some pressure. Sit down."He went to the bathroom and came back with a wet towel and a first aid kit from his bag. He sat across from me on the edge of the bed and pressed the cloth to his own side like it was nothing. Like he hadn't taken a bullet two hours ago protecting me and my father.I crossed the room, took the cloth from his hand, and held it myself. He let me.That was how I knew how tired he was. The door was open. That was the first wrong thing.Cole stopped me with a hand across my chest. He scanned the entrance. Dark inside. No guards posted. No sound."He wants us to walk in," Cole said."So we walk in.""That's the trap.""I know, just walk in anyway."Under it sat my father. His face was swollen. Blood dried at his temple. Both wrists zip-tied to the arms of a metal chair. His eyes found me and he shook his head. Mouthed something I couldn't read."Ashton." Marcus's voice from somewhere above us. The mezzanine level. "Right on time."Cole moved me behind a crate without breaking stride."You look good, Cole," Marcus called down. "Considering you just drove through three of my checkpoints.""I didn't see any checkpoints.""That's the point."A pause. Footsteps above us. Moving slow."Send the senator out," Cole said. "We take him and leave. You walk away clean."Marcus laughed. Not the laugh I remembered from the phone, easy and professional. This one had edges. "You thi

We drove for hours. Cole's jaw was tight, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. Every few minutes he'd check the mirrors, check his phone, check me like he was making sure I was still there. When he finally pulled over at a small motel in the middle of nowhere, the sun was coming up. He got us a room under a fake name. Cash. No ID needed.Inside, he locked the door and pulled out his phone. I watched his face as he listened to Marcus. His expression shifted from hard to something darker. Angrier. He hung up. "Your father's involved in campaign finance fraud. Embezzlement. Money laundering. Names that go high up. Really high up. When he tried to back out, they decided to use you. To keep him in line."I couldn't breathe. "So they want me dead?""They want to keep him compliant. Either works."I walked to the window. Looked out at the empty parking lot."How high up?" I whispered."Higher than we thought."My phone had been off since we left the safe house. I turned it on. Forty-sev

The kiss changed everything and nothing at the same time.Cole pulled back first, like remembering where we were. Who he was. What he was supposed to be doing. A wall went up. Not obvious, but it was there. The professional mask sliding back into place."We can't do this again," he said."Okay.""I'm serious, Ashton. Your father hired me to protect you. Not to—""I know what he hired you to do.""If he finds out—""He won't."Cole looked at me like he wanted to believe that. Like he wanted a lot of things. Then he turned away and checked his phone. Back to work. Back to being the bodyguard.I went upstairs to my room and sat on the bed. My lips still felt like his. I could still taste the coffee. It would have been easy to convince myself that nothing had happened. That we could just go back to the careful distance we'd had before. But that was a lie. And we both knew it.I spent the rest of the day avoiding him. Stayed in my room, scrolled through my phone, tried not to think about t

I woke up to someone staring at me.Those dark eyes locked on my face like he was trying to figure something out. Cole McKnight. Right. The bodyguard. Last night came back in pieces. The blood. Throwing up while he stood there. Him carrying me upstairs like I weighed nothing."What time is it?" My voice came out rough."Seven.""Why are you in my room?""Checking on you."He was sitting in the chair by my window, still fully dressed, like he hadn't slept at all. I sat up. Bad move. The room spun. I made it to the bathroom just in time. When I came out, there was water and aspirin on my nightstand.Cole was still there, arms crossed."I need to shower," I said."Fine. I'll wait downstairs."I stood there for a second, then headed to the bathroom. Under the water, I thought about him watching me sleep. About the way he'd carried me. About how he'd stayed. When I came downstairs, Cole was in my kitchen making coffee like he lived there."Make yourself at home," I said."Your father hired
