Chapter 2

Author: Ding
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. I looked up and saw Lily Cross, standing there, wearing that soft, calculated smile. She exuded the gentle, yielding aura of an Omega, tinged with a practiced sweetness that seemed designed to charm.

"Scarlet," she said softly. "I just finished reporting to the Alpha. He seemed a little down and said he wanted to go out for a drink. I wanted to check with you. Would it be okay if I went with him?"

Her words were polite and direct, but the faint glimmer of pride in her eyes gave her away.

As a Beta, I could tell that she had been around Lucas too much as his scent clung to her. Such a scent should exist only on a bonded mate.

For the past half year, she had maintained this charade before me, pretending to be deferential while secretly savoring her own little victories.

A heavy knot of confusion settled in my chest as I watched her silently.

When had Lucas changed? Why would he favor a she-wolf who was so superficial, fake, and calculated?

At first, he had disliked Lily. He called her foolish and unreliable and even admitted to despising her. But everything changed during a full-moon hunt when Lucas was attacked by a Rogue.

While I was on a business trip in Palonia, I heard that Lily had broken down in worry for him. She tended to Lucas nonstop at the hospital for two full days without sleep. Afterward, Lucas began to see her differently, and gradually, they grew closer.

Lily had openly called Lucas her brother, and soon it became common knowledge. Everyone knew that Alpha Lucas had an Omega "younger sister," while I was jokingly dubbed Lily's "older sister".

Every time I heard that, my expression hardened. Lucas didn't seem to notice. He would just smile and squeeze my waist. "Scarlet, don't listen to them. I only love you."

Could he still say that now?

His wolf's occasional tremors told me that his attention to Lily had gone far beyond what an Alpha owed his pack.

I forced a bitter smile as I stared at Lily.

She returned the same soft smile. "Scarlet, are you upset?"

Before I could answer, Lucas strode in. His Alpha presence radiated raw aggression, yet it softened the moment he approached Lily. "Lily, didn't I tell you to wait for me in the conference room? Why are you here?"

"I-I wasn't sure if I should say yes," Lily stammered, twisting her fingers nervously as she maintained a perfectly obedient stance. "I wanted to hear what Scarlet thinks first."

Lucas' expression softened instantly, and a protective aura seemed to wrap around him. "I want you to go. Do I need anyone else's permission?"

Lily lowered her head. A barely noticeable smile flickered across her face, but she still looked uncertain. "But she's your future Luna."

A hint of impatience flashed in Lucas' eyes as he looked at me. "Lily is already showing you enough respect. She even asked before going out to dinner with me, and yet you—the future Luna of this pack—get caught up in every little joke."

He always brushed off their interference with my pack transfer request as trivial, as if I were the unreasonable one.

Why should I ever accept this so-called joke?

I snorted coldly. "Respect? Over the past six months, how many flirtatious games has she played with you right in front of me? Not only did she bring you breakfast in front of the entire pack, write you cards, and act all coy and clingy, but she even calls you her brother, like it's adorable.

"Does she not feel embarrassed? Other Betas and Omegas find it disgusting. Lucas, can't you see through this hypocrisy, or do you actually enjoy it? Do you like it and take pleasure in it?"

Lily went pale instantly. Her shoulders shook, and tears sparkled on her cheeks, as if she had been deeply wronged.

Lucas' expression darkened. He frowned, radiating the full weight of his Alpha presence. "Scarlet, why are you being so aggressive all of a sudden? You disappoint me."

He suddenly let out a sharp, derisive laugh. "With that sharp, cruel attitude, how could you possibly deserve to stand as my future Luna? I regret being with you."

His words hit like an ice-coated dagger, shattering the last walls of my defenses. Five years of devotion and seven years of companionship, all erased with a single cold sentence.

He said he regretted it.

Two years had passed, and I had been promoted to the second-in-command by the Alpha King. It was a major milestone in my career. The trials and challenges of those years had shaped me, providing the foundation I needed to grow.I had completely transformed, leaving behind the Beta who once clung to an Alpha and becoming a confident, independent leader. When I returned to the Nightshade Pack, the wolves who had known me before barely recognized me. They greeted me nervously, "Scarlet… No, Commander Morningstar, hello." I smiled faintly. I liked that title. "Just call me Scarlet," I said calmly.During the meeting, I was surprised to see Alpha Lucas. Time had matured him. His eyes held a depth I hadn't seen before, though his handsomeness remained. His presence was strong, now tempered with a quiet restraint. When our eyes met, he froze for a moment, then his expression grew complicated. After the meeting, he waited for me by the door. "Scarlet, congratulations," he said

I had been at Emberclaw Pack for two years when I went home for a visit. At the doorstep, I ran into Lily. She had clearly been waiting for me.Our eyes met, and the smugness that once lingered in hers was gone, replaced by resentment and frustration. "Scarlet, you won," she spat. "Alpha Lucas won't let me stay by his side anymore."Her words dripped with anger. "I just don't understand what you have that attracts him. Am I not prettier than you? Am I not younger? Am I not better at keeping him happy? I was born to be his mate. What right does a boring Beta like you have?"She stepped closer and gave me a sharp look. "You're nothing compared to me, yet you won just because you met Lucas first."I felt a surge of irritation. "Enough of this chatter. Transfer 20 thousand dollars to me."Lily froze, then sneered. "You're so full of yourself. You went to Emberclaw Pack, and I'm still at Lucas' Nightshade Pack. No matter how much he likes you, that distance of a thousand miles is eno

My new job had already begun. As the initial discomfort faded, I found myself slowly growing used to the south—the breeze, the trees, and even the beauty of falling petals. I had no choice but to adapt. For years, my world had revolved around Lucas. Now, I was alone in an unfamiliar city, starting a new life on my own. That was until Lucas appeared. He stopped me in the hallway of Emberclaw Pack. Dark circles hung under his eyes, and his gaze was unnervingly red. His Alpha presence was chaotic, completely stripped of its usual control and dominance."Why?" he demanded through clenched teeth, struggling to control the tremble in his lips.I sighed softly and tried to walk past him, but he grabbed my hand with all his strength. His voice came out rough, strained, and the pain flooding through the mind-link nearly consumed me. "Just because Lily played a joke on you, you're going to do this? You're breaking up with me over that?""Yes," I replied through the mind-link.I stared

At 8:00 pm the next evening, I watched from the window as Lucas and Lily got ready downstairs. Lucas called me, and I immediately ended the call."Scarlet! You're pushing it!" he shouted. His voice carried the full force of his Alpha rage, with a faint undercurrent of fear. "If you're going to act like this, I won't ever go out with you again!"Then he grabbed Lily and walked off. That entire weekend, my social media was flooded with their hunting photos."Teaching a newbie to hunt—patience is the first lesson for every wolf.""The mountain paths are tough, but a helping hand makes all the difference.""The view from the top is stunning, but nothing beats the smiles of those beside you. Youth has its own magic."Every post was filled with likes and knowing comments from other pack members."Why is he with Lily this time? Lucas and I had been giving each other the cold shoulder. Before it began, the last message he sent me was, "Did you cancel your pack transfer request?"I replied, "It's none of your business."He shot back smugly, "You'll cancel it. We've been together for five years. You can't stay away from me. Scarlet, you need to apologize to Lily. Until you do, I won't say another word to you."I blocked him immediately. Through the mind-link, I could still sense his emotions shifting—anger, gloom, anxiety—all swinging wildly. He was clearly waiting for me to reach out, but I didn't.Three days before I was due to leave for Emberclaw, Lucas' Beta suddenly appeared at my door with an invitation. "Luna, Alpha Lucas is hosting a party tonight. Your presence is requested." I couldn't refuse, so I went, though a flicker of doubt lingered. Why would he choose this moment for a party? The moment I stepped into the hall, I understood.Lily stood at the entrance, smiling brightly. When she saw me

My phone lit up. It was Sofia Bellamy—my fiery, no-nonsense friend. She fired off a string of messages. I could sense her anger, even through the screen."Scarlet! I just saw your mate, Alpha Lucas, with Lily! They're partying way too hard with your pack, and everyone's pushing him to feed her drinks mouth-to-mouth! She's practically glued to him!"Right after, a video came through. The footage was shaky, lit with a soft, intimate glow.Lucas sat at the center of the crowded booth. The collar of his shirt was undone, and he smiled casually. As everyone egged them on, Lily lowered her head in embarrassment, but she didn't pull away. Through the screen, her joy and sweetness came through so clearly that I could almost feel how happy she was.Someone yelled, "Alpha! Rules are rules! If you lose, you either drink with a lady or call your girlfriend to come get you. Your choice!"Another laughed. "Yes! Call her! Let's see if Scarlet even cares!"The room buzzed with excitement. Eve
