Chapter 3

Author: Ding
It felt as if an invisible hand had clamped down around my heart, squeezing until I could barely breathe.

I looked at him. The man who had once meant everything to me now felt like a stranger. The warmth and tenderness that used to fill his gaze were gone, replaced by cold disappointment and a faint trace of irritation he didn't bother to hide.

Lily chose that moment to lean into Lucas. Her slender arm slipped gently around his shoulder, and tear tracks were still visible on her face, though her voice carried a soft, cautious plea.

"Alpha, please don't be angry. Scarlet just… She just cares about you too much. That's why she spoke without thinking. It's my fault. If I weren't here, you two wouldn't be arguing."

She cast a quick sideways glance at me. The fleeting smugness in her eyes pierced straight through my chest.

Lucas reached back to pat Lily's hand. The casual intimacy of it was striking, as though they were the ones who truly belonged together.

"This has nothing to do with you. She's just too sensitive. She's making a big deal out of nothing."

When he looked back at me, his gaze carried a quiet judgment, as if I had already disappointed him beyond repair.

"Scarlet, you really need to fix that temper of yours. Stop causing a scene and embarrassing everyone."

I took a deep breath, forcing down the lump in my throat and the surge of emotion threatening to spill over. Tears burned at the edges of my eyes, but I pushed them back with sheer will.

I straightened up and met his gaze head-on. "I didn't do anything wrong, Lucas."

He frowned, then snapped, "Scarlet, do you have to be this unreasonable? Look at yourself right now. Petty. Selfish. You're not even as good as an Omega."

A sharp pain tore through my chest, catching me off guard and leaving me breathless. I had never imagined that Lucas would humiliate me like this.

Who did he think he was, and what did he take me for?

Did he despise me now? Was this his way of ending things?

I held his gaze without blinking. For a brief moment, his expression wavered before he looked away first. Through the mind-link, his emotions spilled over in a chaotic rush. There was regret, anger, and reluctance, all hopelessly tangled together.

I knew he hadn't forgotten the time we had spent together. For years, we had relied on each other, never once hurting each other. But this time, Lucas had truly changed. His heart had completely turned toward Lily.

Through his wolf, I could feel it clearly. The attention he gave her had long crossed the line of what an Alpha should show an ordinary pack member.

He continued, "Lily is understanding. She won't take this to heart. Just apologize to her, and we'll put this behind us."

With that single sentence, the trust and bond we had built over five years collapsed in an instant.

I shook my head calmly.

"No."

Lucas' expression darkened, and he firmly asked, "Scarlet, are you really going to keep this up?"

I froze for a moment. What had I done wrong?

Every single word he said now sounded utterly absurd.

In that instant, all desire to argue vanished completely.

I looked at him and said quietly, "Alpha Lucas, I've always been like this."

Then I turned and slammed the door shut behind me.

Back in my office, I opened my laptop and found myself staring at the transfer request form for the pack once again. There was only one hour left before the deadline.

After that, I would no longer be able to withdraw my transfer request. I would be leaving the city I had lived in for years and heading south, to the Emberclaw Pack.

I closed my eyes, sensing the emotions still flowing through the mind-link. Lucas was angry and irritated, but there was no sign that he intended to come after me or apologize.

He probably thought I would calm down like I always did, then turn back on my own.

After all, I was supposed to be his future Luna. A Luna was meant to tolerate her Alpha's temper.

But this time, I didn't withdraw the request.

I sat there for a long moment, then began searching for everything I could about Emberclaw. Before I knew it, the final deadline passed.

The application status flashed "Locked".

I let out a small sigh. It turned out that leaving Lucas wasn't as dreadful as I had expected.

When I stepped outside, the moonlight was cold and pale, draping over me without a trace of warmth. I gazed at the bright full moon and remembered all the nights Lucas and I had run beneath it, holding each other close, believing those moments would last forever.

Now, those memories only brought me pain.

Under the full moon, I let him go and freed myself too.

From this moment, our paths would part completely, and we would owe each other nothing.

Two years had passed, and I had been promoted to the second-in-command by the Alpha King. It was a major milestone in my career. They greeted me nervously, "Scarlet… No, Commander Morningstar, hello." I smiled faintly. I liked that title. "Just call me Scarlet," I said calmly.During the meeting, I was surprised to see Alpha Lucas. Time had matured him. His eyes held a depth I hadn't seen before, though his handsomeness remained. His presence was strong, now tempered with a quiet restraint. When our eyes met, he froze for a moment, then his expression grew complicated. After the meeting, he waited for me by the door. "Scarlet, congratulations," he said

I had been at Emberclaw Pack for two years when I went home for a visit. At the doorstep, I ran into Lily. She had clearly been waiting for me.Our eyes met, and the smugness that once lingered in hers was gone, replaced by resentment and frustration. "Scarlet, you won," she spat. "Alpha Lucas won't let me stay by his side anymore."Her words dripped with anger. "I just don't understand what you have that attracts him. Am I not prettier than you? Am I not younger? Am I not better at keeping him happy? I was born to be his mate. What right does a boring Beta like you have?"She stepped closer and gave me a sharp look. "You're nothing compared to me, yet you won just because you met Lucas first."I felt a surge of irritation. "Enough of this chatter. Transfer 20 thousand dollars to me."Lily froze, then sneered. "You're so full of yourself. You went to Emberclaw Pack, and I'm still at Lucas' Nightshade Pack. No matter how much he likes you, that distance of a thousand miles is eno

My new job had already begun. As the initial discomfort faded, I found myself slowly growing used to the south—the breeze, the trees, and even the beauty of falling petals. I had no choice but to adapt. For years, my world had revolved around Lucas. Now, I was alone in an unfamiliar city, starting a new life on my own. That was until Lucas appeared. He stopped me in the hallway of Emberclaw Pack. Dark circles hung under his eyes, and his gaze was unnervingly red. His Alpha presence was chaotic, completely stripped of its usual control and dominance."Why?" he demanded through clenched teeth, struggling to control the tremble in his lips.I sighed softly and tried to walk past him, but he grabbed my hand with all his strength. His voice came out rough, strained, and the pain flooding through the mind-link nearly consumed me. "Just because Lily played a joke on you, you're going to do this? You're breaking up with me over that?""Yes," I replied through the mind-link.I stared

At 8:00 pm the next evening, I watched from the window as Lucas and Lily got ready downstairs. Lucas called me, and I immediately ended the call."Scarlet! You're pushing it!" he shouted. His voice carried the full force of his Alpha rage, with a faint undercurrent of fear. Lucas and I had been giving each other the cold shoulder. Before it began, the last message he sent me was, "Did you cancel your pack transfer request?"I replied, "It's none of your business."He shot back smugly, "You'll cancel it. We've been together for five years. You can't stay away from me. Scarlet, you need to apologize to Lily. Until you do, I won't say another word to you."I blocked him immediately. Through the mind-link, I could still sense his emotions shifting—anger, gloom, anxiety—all swinging wildly. He was clearly waiting for me to reach out, but I didn't.Three days before I was due to leave for Emberclaw, Lucas' Beta suddenly appeared at my door with an invitation. "Luna, Alpha Lucas is hosting a party tonight. Your presence is requested." I couldn't refuse, so I went, though a flicker of doubt lingered. Why would he choose this moment for a party? The moment I stepped into the hall, I understood.Lily stood at the entrance, smiling brightly. When she saw me

My phone lit up. It was Sofia Bellamy—my fiery, no-nonsense friend. She fired off a string of messages. I could sense her anger, even through the screen."Scarlet! I just saw your mate, Alpha Lucas, with Lily! They're partying way too hard with your pack, and everyone's pushing him to feed her drinks mouth-to-mouth! She's practically glued to him!"Right after, a video came through. The footage was shaky, lit with a soft, intimate glow.Lucas sat at the center of the crowded booth. The collar of his shirt was undone, and he smiled casually. As everyone egged them on, Lily lowered her head in embarrassment, but she didn't pull away. Through the screen, her joy and sweetness came through so clearly that I could almost feel how happy she was.Someone yelled, "Alpha! Rules are rules! If you lose, you either drink with a lady or call your girlfriend to come get you. Your choice!"Another laughed. "Yes! Call her! Let's see if Scarlet even cares!"The room buzzed with excitement. Eve
